404 Errors
-
Hello Team,
I noticed that my site has 1,000s of 404 errors. Not sure how this happened, maybe when I updated our CMS.
My question is, should I worry about them. Should I delete them or just leave them alone.
Thank you for your feedback!

No worries,
Sorry - my mistake - I didn't mean Open Site Explorer. You can find the 404 report in your campaign settings in your SEOMoz dashboard. Click Errors and Download as CSV top right. You can sort the CSV in Excel to group all of your 404's and easily find the referral page.
If for some reason you can't access the Errors page in your dashboard (still waiting for your report to finish etc), you can do pretty mush the same with software called Xenu Link Sleuth.
Cheers,

Also, ask your hosting administrator, to help; they often can fix 404, & 301 server side.

Thank you very much!!!
How do I find the 404's on Open Site Explorer, would that be on the top pages tab?
I'll make sure to send out some love from one of my sites to your confetti

Hi there,
Yes - you should definitely worry about them. Get them fixed or add a 301 redirect to a relevant page.
In my experience, lots of 404's often stem from a small number of places such so it shouldn't be a case of having to manually fix every single link. If you fix the link in one place, you'll probably fix it in hundreds of others. Download a CSV of your broken links from Open Site Explorer. You'll easily be able to see the referring page and fix the links.
Hope that helps.

Search Console - Mobile Usability Errors
A site I'm looking at for a client had 100's of pages flagged as having Mobile Usability errors in Search Console. I found that the theme uses parameters in the URLs of some of theme resources (.js/.css) to identify the version strings. These were then being blocked by a rule in the robots.txt: "Disallow: /*?" I've removed this rule, and now when I inspect URLs and test the live versions of the page they are now being reported as mobile friendly. I then submitted validation requests in Search Console for both of the errors ("Text to small" and "Clickable Elements too close") My problem now, is that the validation has completed and the pages are still being reported as having the errors. I've double checked and they're find if I inspect them individually. Does anyone else have experience clearing these issues in Search Console? Any ideas what's going on here!

When rogerbot tried to crawl my site it gets a 404\. Why?
When rogerbot tries to craw my site it tries http://website.com. My website then tries to redirect to http://www.website.com and is throwing a 404 and ends up not getting crawled. It also throws a 404 when trying to read my robots.txt file for some reason. We allow rogerbot user agent so unsure whats happening here. Is there something weird going on when trying to access my site without the 'www' that is causing the 404? Any insight is helpful here. Thanks,

Pages Linking to Sites that Return 404 Error
We have just a few 404 errors on our site. Is there any way to figure out which pages are linking to the pages that create 404 errors? I would rather fix the links than create new 301 redirects. Thanks!

Mass 404 Checker?
Hi all, I'm currently looking after a collection of old newspaper sites that have had various developments during their time. The problem is there are so many 404 pages all over the place and the sites are bleeding link juice everywhere so I'm looking for a tool where I can check a lot of URLs at once. For example from an OSE report I have done a random sampling of the target URLs and some of them 404 (eek!) but there are too many to check manually to know which ones are still live and which ones have 404'd or are redirecting. Is there a tool anyone uses for this or a way one of the SEOMoz tools can do this? Also I've asked a few people personally how to check this and they've suggested Xenu, Xenu won't work as it only checks current site navigation. Thanks in advance!

Google causing Magento Errors
I have an online shop - run using Magento. I have recently upgraded to version 1.4, and I installed a extension called Lightspeed, a caching module which makes tremendous improvements to Magento's performance. Unfortunately, a confoguration problem, meant that I had to disable the module, because it was generating errors relating to the session, if you entered the site from any page other than the home page. The site is now working as expected. I have Magento's error notification set to email - I've not received emails for errors generated by visitors. However over a 72 hour period, I received a deluge of error emails, which where being caused by Googlebot. It was generating an erro in a file called lightspeed.php Here is an example: URL: http://www.jacksgardenstore.com/tahiti-vulcano-hammock IP Address: 66.249.66.186 Time: 2011-06-11 17:02:26 GMT Error: Cannot send headers; headers already sent in /home/jack/jacksgardenstore.com/user/jack_1.4/htdocs/lightspeed.php, line 444 So several things of note: I deleted lightspeed.php from the server, before any of these error messages began to arrive. lightspeed.php was never exposed in the URL, at anytime. It was referred to in a mod_rewrite rule in .htaccess, which I also commented out. If you clicked on the URL in the error message, it loaded in the browser as expected, with no error messages. It appears that Google has cached a version of the page which briefly existed whilst Lightspeed was enabled. But I though that Google cached generated HTML. Since when does cache a server-side PHP file ???? I've just used the Fetch as Googlebot facility on Webmaster Tools for the URL in the above error message, and it returns the page as expected. No errors. I've had to errors at all in the last 48 hours, so I'm hoping it's just sorted itself out. However I'm concerned about any Google related implications. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ben
