Mass 404 pages
-
Hi Guys,
If I were to have to take down the majority of my site, taking all content and links pointing to that content down. How would the search engines react? Would I get a penalty for the majority of the site all of the sudden missing? My only concern is the loss of traffic on the remanding pages.
Thanks!

If there is any way to salvage any of the content, by combining it into fewer pages, that's ultimately the best course. Because you can then 301 all the old versions to the lower number of new, consolidated versions, and have the best of all worlds.

There have been some reports of people running into trouble from mass-301s, and a mass-404 might look odd to Google, but I suspect any issues would be temporary. You're not going to be penalized for removing your own content, but there could be crawl consequences and you will definitely cut off the link-juice. So, whether or not it's a Capital-P "Penalty", you may lose ranking and traffic.
If this is preventative, and you don't currently have a problem, I'd suggest taking it in stages. 404 or META NOINDEX the thinnest content, layer by layer. If it has any relevance, 301 it to something appropriate. That way, you can also gauge the traffic loss from any links you're cutting. I'd hesitate to do this all at once, unless I knew I had a problem.

The only problem is that the pages i'm trying to take down are all autogen/ thin content. I'd like to just get rid of them to avoid any potential penalty in the future. The pages themselves get less then 3% of the total sites traffic but amount to about 95% of the sites content.

You wouldn't necessarily get a "penalty" from the search engines but the pages will eventually disappear from the search results if they are returning 404 response codes, and thus you will lose traffic as a result. Your best bet would be to 301 redirect the inactive pages either to the homepage or to other relevant pages on your site.

Hundreds of 404 errors are showing up for pages that never existed
For our site, Google is suddenly reporting hundreds of 404 errors, but the pages they are reporting never existed. The links Google shows are clearly spam style, but the website hasn't been hacked. This happened a few weeks ago, and after a couple days they disappeared from WMT. What's the deal? Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-9.35.18-AM.png

Hello, I just had a problem my site started showing up 404 issues for all my wordpress pages and post but visually the page was loading with content but yet all pages and software including google WMT was showing the 404 issue. I never found the issue but was able to move the site into a new hosting and restore from a backup and it work. Google found the issue on Jan 27th and they remove all the pages with 404 from the index and I lost most of my top ranking I have since fix the issue and was wondering if google would restore my ranking in such a case? Can view pages of site, but Google & SEOmoz return 404
I can visit and view every page of a site (can also see source code), but Google, SEOmoz and others say anything other than home page is a 404 and Google won't index the sub-pages. I have check robots.txt and HTAccess and can't find anything wrong. Is this a DNS or server setting problem? Any ideas? Thanks, Fitz

Redirecting 404
Hi. I'm working on a wordpress site, which got some old deleted pages indexed and now shows a 404 (also in the results) As these old pages earlier got content and probably also some links pointing towards it, what would then be best practice to do? Should i make an 301 redirect? Make the 404 noindex?

When checking my crawl diagnostics this morning I see that I have the error Duplicate page content. It lists the exact same url twice though and I don't understand how to fix this. Ranking above PLACE PAGES
What does it take for results to show up above Place Page results. It seems like Google Local gets a lot of emphasis . Any thoughts?
