Too many external links vs linking root domains - good or bad?
-
Hi guys,
After the latest Linkscape update, we noticed that our website have 424,671 external links with 4,395 linking root domains, so roughly 100 links/domain.
Does Google consider this to be a negative thing or we do not need to worry about it.
Many thanks.
David

Our landing page www.domain.com/abc/ got about 90% of links containing 2 main keywords "abc" and "def"we target on that page.
That is a concern. It is highly unnatural. It sends a strong indicator that you are in control of those links which may lead Google to discount their value.

Thanks Ryan,
We also noticed a potential issue: the majority of the external links are keyword rich, e.g.
Our landing page www.domain.com/abc/ got about 90% of links containing 2 main keywords "abc" and "def"we target on that page.
We have heard websites could be penalysed for over-optimised, unnarual link profile, should we be concerned about the above?

These metrics are shared for informational purposes and for the most part you do not need to worry about it. If you look at SEOmoz, they also have a 100:1 ratio.
The information in and of itself offers almost no value. You could have 4,394 sites with 1 link from each and then 1 site with 420k links.
The data is mainly shared to help you better compare backlink profiles between sites.

How to analyse a big drop in external links
Hi! Can someone tell me the best way to determine what caused a big drop in External Followed Links? I have used tools like remove em in the past to try and get rid of exact match keyword links but I'm unsure if this was the root cause. Our rankings went up the 3 months after this period, but this year they have dropped back to levels from 2015. I'm wondering if this drop has anything to do with this decline. See attached. EHyIy

What is the importance of root domains linking to your website in Google's rankings? I notice our competition has a much higher number on keywords I'm analyzing. Thank you!
I've noticed our competition has a much higher number of "root domains" linking to their page than we do. Is this simply a result of more websites linking to them? How long does it normally take to build up these numbers/rankings? (I'm assuming it's a concerted effort, which I'll be researching.) Thank you!

Consolidating many external blogs onto main website: canonicals or 301s
Hi Everyone, Presently I have many blogs across a range of domains, each one targeting the client/type of user interested in that product (or service in this case). I originally set up this strategy to use the content of each blog to create a "link juice farm" (our products are educational courses so have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT target market depending on the course area), which in turn links to the related page/course on our main site. My plan is to move all the content from those external blogs into subcategories on my main website blog in order to increase its traffic, authority etc. Originally, I was going to cut and paste the content, then put in appropriate 301 redirects from the external blogs to the main site. However, I then thought about copying all the content to my main site, setting it as the canonical version, and leaving all the external blogs intact and running. The idea being, I still get the benefit of all those external links pointing back at my main website. Which would be the better strategy for me to pursue? Thanks in advance for your insights, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this question.

Root or Inner page for Links?
Hi everyone, I am starting my link building campaign after parting with many an SEO company. I have been able to establish some links which I have used my targeted keywords as anchor text. I have also linked these to the relevant product pages on my site. I am now however, wondering if I should have link them just to my main domain name? My site only has a rank of 21 so I just wondered if I should at the start be building keyword links to the main domain? I am also building branded links to the main domain as well as doing keyword linking too. Thanks Michelle

Page links vs. domain links
Hello all, I am trying to find out how Google weighs page inbound links vs. domain inbound links. I have a domain with about 100,000 inbound links and am adding a new page to my domain which at this time has 0 links. I will be trying to outrank a competitors page that has 6,000 inbound links to the competitors page, but only has 26,000 inbound links to my competitors domain . Is there a formula or a way to know how Google values a page link vs. a domain link?
