Multiple domain names with similar content
-
Hi, we've got multiple domains that point to the same website and same content. The only difference is the currency and some text, you could say only about 5% difference in each domain's content:
http://www.redwrappings.com.au/
http://www.redwrappings.com/Will Google penalise us for having 95% similar content for each domain (they sell the same products but in different currencies)?
We shoudn't really put canonical link, should we? Because 5% of the content is different, which means they are not identical. What would be the best solution if this is a problem?
Thanks

Hi Alan,
Thanks for that. We do want to boost the rank on one domain compared to other domains, so i think this is the way to go.
Cheers

Hi Graham,
In my experience cannonical content issues can arise with content that is only 50% similar. The strange thing is that in other cases I've had content that is 99.9% similar that hasn't been flagged by search engines.
There is a trick for identifiying the possiblity for duplicate content issues. It's outlined in this video series.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9AfEfTFgzM&feature=player_embedded
There are three parts to the video, and I must admit it is quite cheesy but the information is solid.

I don't believe it's a penalty, but seems a lot of people have this same question. Google: "There's no such thing as a "duplicate content penalty." At least, not in the way most people mean when they say that."
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html
If I remember correct Rand Fishkin says in this webinar that it's gonna hurt, but you may want to watch it to be 100%! I remember it being sometime after 40-50% of the webinar I think. http://www.seomoz.org/dp/pro-webinar-october-2010-with-rand-fishkin
Good luck!

yes it will be seen as duplicate,
yes i would use rel=canonical so that the one site is getting ranked, but then your other sites wont rank so well.
you could 301 redirect them all to the same site then do somthing iun the code to present the 5% of changes to the correct users.
but then you have the pproblem of .com not ranking as well as .com.au in Australia.
if you want to keep the .com and the .com.au then you really need to make sites that are differentunless you can afford to maintain 2 vastly diffeernt sites, and can afford 2 SEO campains, i would 301 redirect to the one url. if you have links pointing to both domains then doing a 301 redirect will assign all link juice to one site, you may see a boost in the search engines.

We have multiple collections being flagged as duplicate content - but I can't find where these duplications are coming from? The duplicate content has no introductory text, and no meta description. Please see examples:- This is the correct collection page:-

'domain:example.com/' is this line with a '/' at the end of the domain valid in a disavow report file ?
Hi everyone Just out of curiosity, what would happen if in my disavow report I have this line : domain:example.com**/** instead of domain:example.com as recommended by google. I was just wondering if adding a / at the end of a domain would automatically render the line invalid and ignored by Google's disavow backlinks tool. Many thanks for your thoughts

Value in Consolidating Similar Sites / Duplicate Content for Different URLs
We have 5 ecommerce sites: one company site with all products, and then four product-specific sites with relevant URL titles and products divided up between them (www.companysite.com, www.product1.com, www.product2.com, etc). We're thinking of consolidating the smaller sites into our most successful site (www.product1.com) in order to save management time and money, even though I hate to lose the product-specific URLs in search results. Is this a wise move? If we proceed, all of the products will be available on both our company site and our most successful site (www.company.com & www.product1.com). This would unfortunately give us two sites of duplicate content, since the products will have the same pictures, descriptions, etc. The only difference would be the URL. Would we face penalties from Google, even though it would make sense to continue to carry our products on our company site?

Is it a good idea to use an old domain name for a new product
Hi guys, I have a domain name XYZ.com which hosts the site of a technology service company as of now. The company however didn't do well and shut down a few years ago. Now, that company wants to launch a new set of technology products and wants to use the same domain name. Is it a good idea. The issues that I can see here are: 1. Google has previous pages indexed 2. There are a couple of subdomains totally irrelevant to the business. like employees.xyz.com there. 3. Can the previous indexing be completely undone. Regards, Mayank

Duplicate Content
Hello guys, After fixing the rel tag on similar pages on the site I thought that duplicate content issue were resolved. I checked HTML Improvements on GWT and instead of going down as I expected, it went up. The duplicate issues affect identical product pages which differ from each other just for one detail, let's say length or colour. I could write different meta tags as the duplicate is the meta description, and I did it for some products but still didn't have any effects and they are still showing as duplicates. What would the problem be? Cheers

Should a 301 from a penalised domain to a new domain be removed?
A business traded on a domain let's say example.COM which was heavily penalised due to non-removable spammy back links. Their previous SEO advised them to set up on example.CO.UK but redirected example.COM to example.CO.UK. Example.CO.UK ranks very poorly, presumably due to being 'tarred with the same brush' i.e. attributed with the ills of example.COM. Will it do any good to remove the redirect or is example.CO.UK now doomed as well?

But before I start this properly, I want to change it to www.drivingbrighton.co.uk (as the first is too long to fit on the car etc!!!!) Whats the best way to do this? Is there a way to help keep its position in google as just got into top10 for different keywords?
