How can you get the right site links for your site?
-
Hello all,
I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result.
Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2.
We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2.
Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links.
Ideally what we want is:
-
Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2
-
The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2)
-
For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.)
Many thanks in advance!
Anila

Alan,
On that note, do you recommend demoting the sitelinks via webmaster to get Google to replace it with the better optimized and relevant pages? or just let time do its thing
Thanks

The more emphasis, signals and depth of content, supported by a stronger individual page focused inbound link effort, the more likely the pages you care about will be to end up in sitelinks.
There isn't one formula unique to sitelinks that Google specifies, so I've only ever just applied best practices SEO concepts to my desired goal. And have seen those pages sometimes become sitelinks.

Have you got any suggestions of how to optimize for the brand Loco2 without coming across as OTT. The reason is we already have Loco2 on a lot of pages. Should we try and optimise each page we want as a site link for Loco2 AND relevant terms for that page?
-
We will try to optimise site pages that we want to come up. What tips do you have for that. For example on the Times and Tickets, do we need to make it explicit that this is where you can search and book trains? should this be via H1 tags or meta data or something else. The reason I ask this is that there is only a little text on this page for a reason as it's function is as a software tool.
What about the Loco2 / Loco 2 discrepancy? That is the main issue - we would like to see substantial site links that are identical for both these terms (I have changed the question to reflect this!)

It's correct that you can't directly control or dictate which pages Google includes in sitelinks. You can, however, help influence this by better optimizing the pages you want included through more emphasis on your brand within the content of those pages - integrate brand references within on-page content. Then, work to get a mix of brand-centric anchor text into links coming from other sites that point to those pages.
It's not a guarantee, however I've seen some success in this method for various clients.

This could be that LoCO2 is another branded term another company is using like LoCO2 Energy.
This can be fixed by just SEO the pages that you want to be indexed and searched. Majority of the time companies with less competitors using the same branded terms, they have a higher chance of dominating the SERP, this could be the case for your brand.
My suggestions, you should optimize your and build links around your targeted brand term 'Loco2'.
If you want more sitelinks, or more related site links(currently you have About - FAQs - Blog - Inspire me) you can demote these sitelinks within Google Webmaster Tools. You can list the subfolders you don't want to appear in sitelinks extension and it will randomly fill it with another link.
I don't believe you can CHOOSE which links appear at the sitelinks but only what not to include.
Good luck!

Tools/Software that can crawl all image URLs in a site
Excluding Screaming Frog, what other tools/software to use in order to crawl all image URLs in a site? Because in Screaming Frog, they don't crawl image URLs which are not under the site domain. Example of an image URL outside the client site: http://cdn.shopify.com/images/this-is-just-a-sample.png If the client is: http://www.example.com, Screaming Frog only crawls images under it like, http://www.example.com/images/this-is-just-a-sample.png

Do bad links to a sub-domain which redirects to our primary domain pass link juice and hurt rankings?
Sometime in the distant past there existed a blog.domain.com for domain.com. This was before we started work for domain.com. During the process of optimizing domain.com we decided to 301 blog.domain.com to www.domain.com. Recently, we discovered that blog.domain.com actually has a lot of bad links pointing towards it. By a lot I mean, 5000+. I am curious to hear people's opinions on the following: 1. Are they passing bad link juice? 2. does Google consider links to a sub-domain being passed through a 301 to be bad links to our primary domain? 3. The best approach to having these links removed?

Paid directory links--good or bad thing to do for Prof. Services sites?
Yes, I am pretty darn new to SEO and have heard that Google doesn't like Paid directory links. I have looked at some of my competition and they must have paid to get in certain directories as I don't see any backlinks posted on their home pages (usually a badge or icon must be placed on the homepage to avoid a fee.)

One site per location or all under and umbrella site?
I am working on a project where we are re-branding lots (100+) existing local business under one national brand. I am wondering what we should do with their existing websites, they are generally fairly poor and will need re-designing to match the new brand but may have some residual links? 301 redirect the URL to the national site, e.g. nationalsite.com/localbusinessA? If so what should I look out for? Do I need to specifically redirect any pages that have links to them to the same pages on the new site? Or should I give them a new standalone website that they link back to the national brand site? More than likely this will be hosted on the same server and CMS as the main site just the URL will remain Do I need to make sure that any old URL's that had links to them are 301'd to the new pages? Many thanks for you advice.

Can a Joomla template ruin a sites on-page seo?
Have been looking into a potential clients site that performs really badly, when I took a look in 'googlebot view' I see that every on page link appears- [visit camp26.biz] clients link title as expected insures against a negative affect. But having that as the first two words of every link title/anchor in the eyes of Google would seem to be something to be concerned about? Have tried searching for answers to this online but template providers are so prevelant everywhere I can't find any decent information on this issue. If anyone can throw some light on this for me it will be much appreciated : )

How do you find bad links to your site?
My website has around 900 incoming links and I have a Google 50 penalty that is sitewide. I have been doing research and from what I can see is that the 50 penalty is usually associated with scetchy links. The penalty started last year. I had about 40 related domains to my main site and each had a simple one page site with a link to the main site. (I know I screwed up) I cleaned up all of those links by removing them. The single page site still exist, but they have no links and several of them still rank very well. I also had an outside SEO person that bought a few links. I came clean with Google and told them everything. I gave them all of my sites and that the SEO person had bought links. I gave them full disclosure and removed everything. I have one site that I can't get the link removed from. I have contacted them numerous times to remove the link and I get no response. I am curious if anyone has had a simular experience and how they corrected the situation. Another issue is that my site is "thin" because its an ecommerce affiliate site and full of affiliate links. I work in the costume market. I'm also afraid that I have other bad links pointing to my site. Dooes anyone know of a tool to identify bad links that Google may be penalizing me for at this time. Here is Google's latest denial of my reconsideration request. Dear site owner or webmaster of XXXXXXXXX.com. We received a request from a site owner to reconsider XXXXXXXX.com for compliance with Google's Webmaster Guidelines. We've reviewed your site and we believe that some or all of your pages still violate our quality guidelines. If you wish to be reconsidered again, please correct or remove all pages that are outside our quality guidelines. When such changes have been made, please visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reconsideration?hl=en and resubmit your site for reconsideration.
