SEO Struggles

Hey everyone,
I am a web programmer and have been fooling around with SEO for about a year now and just started to get pretty serious about it so I signed up for SEOmoz. We just launched our new site about 4 months ago (http://www.cincinnatiwebtec.com) and Google just started ranking us about a month ago. I believe we have done everything right with H1 tags, H2 tags, Title tags, alt tags, inbound links, url structure, etc. but yet we still can't even seem to get to the 1st or 2nd page of Google for "Cincinnati Web Design". I know it's going to be a competitive keyword because the people fighting for it are the SEO experts, but if you were to compare a person on page 2 or 3 to us, some of them have nothing to do with Cincinnati web design and I highly doubt they even bother with SEO, but yet they are ranked higher than us. i.e. http://www.hollandadvertising.com/ - the only place I see Cincinnati is the address at the bottom and they have only 30 inbound links according to yahoo. On top of that, they are an advertising firm, not a web design firm!
I was wondering if you guys would take a look at our site above and offer some suggestions. Do you think we are spreading the keywords too thin? I mean I just can't think of why a company like the Holland Advertising example above would rank higher than us. We clearly have a more SEO optimized site, more inbound links, more quality links, 0 errors, 0 warnings, etc. I am just at a loss. Hope you guys can help.

Very good info, thank you! So basically I imagine the more content we write the more pages will be indexed and the better ranking we will get on our keywords right? Does it matter whether this content is in the form of a blog? Or should we just create new pages for this? I will definitely look into the business directory's. Thanks again, Chris

First thought is it's just too soon to expect front page if your domain's less than a year old, your site only 4 months and just indexed a month ago.
Also I checked out Holland to see how you differ. Here's a quick rundown of why I think they're outranking you for now. (For inbound links I used SEOmoz's own Open Site Explorer)
They have around 374 pages indexed in google, your site has 30. Their site has been around since 2007. Yours less than a year.
You have more links but they have 3 times as many inbound domains. Your top inbound links appear to come mainly from client footers (quality sites but not relevant, link is the same on every page rather than being cited in the body content), while theirs come from business directories and pages that list web design firms in Cincinatti.
If I were you, my next moves would be:
1. Submit your business to a bunch of free (preferably Cincinatti-focused) business directories. Give the Whitespark Local Citation Finder a try to help you find relevant ones. A lot of people dislike free directories, and it's pretty old school but I think that local SEO is different in that regard. You see a lot of directories cited in Google Places. I bet between Whitespark and SEOmoz's Open Site Explorer you could get a list of plenty of these & you only have to do the run of them once, it's a rite of passage for local businesses IMO.
2. Get more relevant content up on your site... Case studies, relevant articles, start blogging. Just keep updating your website with relevant things. "7 Things Businesses in Cincinnati Need to Know About Web Design" and so forth. Take a bunch of tried and true principals and pitches and make them Cincinnati-focused.
I know it's pretty basic, nothing too exciting but I think there's a couple things that you could do right now and see return from.That and a little more time.

Would sharing the same IP address with competitors in the same market hurt SEO?
I work for the Chevy dealership in New York who is trying to rank against other Chevy dealerships in the same area. All the dealerships, including my client, are using the same Chevy endorsed CMS (Cobalt). I just noticed that all of these competitors, including my client, are using the SAME IP address. Would it be beneficial to SEO if we were to ditch the Cobalt platform and choose another one that gave us a unique IP address? Have any of you run into this before? Any help would be appreciated.

SEO's done, 301s in place, old site STILL outranks new site. What to do?
Since Sep 2010 I have had a site up with minimal SEO optimization (www.chrisbrushmusic.com). Oct 29, 2012, I launched a new site on a new domain (www.chrisbrushdrums.com) with more content and tons of SEO work behind it. The content of the new site is significantly different from the old site, and I wish to keep the old site around. I have 301's in place for specific URLs on the old site that point to the new site. I have submitted xml sitemaps for the new site. As of now, the old site still outranks the new site (i.e. Google search for "nashville session drummer" and my old site is #9 - my new site is nowhere). What should I do? Thanks.

Certainty or Uncertainty of SEO / Link Building
Hey there I'm new to both SEO and Seomoz. I have this personal site I've been working on SEO wise (slowly since I started learning from 0) and I have reached a point where the only missing thing for me to do is build links. However, the competitors for my site have thousands of links. From all I've read on the web regarding SEO&LinkBuilding, including articles in this site...the old method of spamming links wherever/whenever possible is now being penalized while the practice of manual/hand-built links of higher quality and lesser quantity is rewarded. So I went ahead and approached several linkbuilding companies and one thing that struck me was the level of uncertainty regarding the chances of getting a site to get to the first page. I understand there's factors you cannot predict or control, such as what your competitors are doing on the SEO front...but ultimately, I'm curious as to how do you effectively gauge the possibility of getting to the top page of any keyword combination? Especially when dealing with clients... since apparently whoever 'guarantees' you anything is a fraud or uses blackhat techniques...how do you pitch the 'uncertainty' to the client? Likewise...how do you know if you can make it to the top page or viceversa? Cheers

What is the difference between "external backlinks" & "referring domains" on Majestic SEO?
According to Majestic SEO's glossary, a "Referring domain, also known as "ref domain", is a domain from which a backlink is pointing to a page or link." Given this definition, I'm not sure what an external backlink is?

Backlinks: Majestic SEO vs. OSE
My apologies if this noob question has already been answered somewhere, but what's the difference between the backlinks reported by Majestic SEO vs. the links reported by OSE. Just curious why the former might report 2,360 external backlinks to a page and the latter might report 949 total links to the same page. Just curious. Thanks!

How do you perform competitive research for SEO?
What metrics tell you the most when you're looking at your competitors across the search landscape? PageRank/MozRank Inbound links Keyword rankings Alexa/QuantCast/etc. Pages indexed Something else entirely? What numbers speak volumes to you when you want to get an idea of how you benchmark against your competitors? And how do you communicate these results?
