SEO in Africa
-
Hi everyone,
I am a new danish SEOMOZ member currently living in Angola, Africa. I have created the site AngolaCarro.com - an online marketplace for cars. The website is in Portuguese, as this is the main language in Angola.
I am struggling finding good Angolan/Portuguese sites for solid back links and I would be extremely thankful if anyone could give SEO advice on how/where to build strong links from Portuguese language sites.
Will using dropmylink.com to create back links from English language sites to my Portuguese site be a waist of time or will it have a SEO effect?
Thanks in advance and have a great Sunday.

I do not see the english/US dealer links as a problem as they are relevant to what your site is. As to the links from Portugese sites, you might try contacting the english dealers and asking about their connections in Portugal or Brazil. They might be able to assist you. Assuming you speak Portugese, you could start looking for some Portugese blogs that are relevant and let you post with links or post comments with links.
This usually works better once you have made a few good contributions.
I went to dropmylink and see that they allow you to test keyword anchor text for sites that allow links. If you do not speak portugese, translate on babylon, etc.: I used cars for sale, auto sales, etc. and got the following translations:
Carros de vendas, de autopeças para os, concessionários de auto de venda aos, concessionários de auto angola
Using Carros de vendas, Dropmylink returned some fairly good looking sites (I speak passable Spanish, so simply translated using Google translate to English).
Hope this is helpful to you and good luck. I have a good friend who sells heavy equipment in Ghana and Nigeria and the African market is quite interesting.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your useful answer. I didden't set Angola as my target area on Geo settings, but that is now fixed.
The site is in Portuguse, but most of the listings are from US dealers (about 1.500) and those listings are mainly in English, is this an problem, as I am using gTLD? See: http://www.angolacarro.com/ezautos/49992-2010-mercedes-benz-c300-sedan-automatic
I am finding it difficult getting good Portuguese back links, can you recommend any solid sites?
Again thanks for your help.

Welcome to moz Kenneth,
...SEO advice on how/where to build strong links from Portuguese language sites.
The countries I will suggest you will likely know, but are Portugal obviously and Brazil. (My favorite word in Portugese is Porto or Port!) You are using a generic TLD and, "The website is in Portugese,..." I am assuming you have set the geotargeting tool to let Google know you are targeting Angola and not these other countries: Google Webmaster Tools:Multi Regional & Multi Language. I am also assuming that there is no French or English or Bantu on the site. (Since you are using a gTLD as opposed to a ccTLD, etc.)
You can link from other language sites and so long as you follow the other linking guidelines, you should not have a problem with your links. You do want to insure you are getting Portugese language links though on several levels.
I have not used dropmylink before, but on the face of it, I see no problems. Just remember that if you are getting junk links you are setting yourself up for pain down the road. I insert this only because they offer up .edu and .gov links and I am not researching anything past the first page of that site. So, if these are known bad links, you will have problems, OK you could have.
Hope this clarifies and assists,
Robert

A dumb SEO question
Is it possible for a blog to rank only with fantastic content without any purchasing of backlinks... And how long does it take (on average) to get for example 500 active readers daily?

Negative SEO & How long does it take for Google to disavow
Following on from a previous problem of this sweetandsavorymeals completely dropping from index, we have discovered that 150+ spam, porn domains have been directed at our pages (sometime in the last 3-4 months, don't have an exact date). Does anyone have exerpeince on how long it may take Google to take noticed of a new disavow list? Any estimates would be very helpful in determining our next course of action.

Best Name for Business and Backlinks / SEO
Sorry if this is a basic question I should know the answer for. We have just acquired the .org for a moderately well searched keyword set. Our objective is to fight for rank specifically on this one set of two keywords. We want make sure our site is setup and business named optimally for this. Here is my question. What is the best business name for SEO and keyword rich backlinks, or anything else I'm not thinking of? KEYWORDS: Blue Widget DOMAIN: BlueWidget.org BUSINESS NAME OPTIONS: A) simply BlueWidget.org. We like this but do we lose some benefit of "Blue Widget" with a space on backlinks? **B) Blue Widget Foundation. Is this better because people will reference us by the keywords with a space "The Blue Widget Foundation", instead of "from the people at BLUEWIDGET.org"? ** Am I missing anything important here in the name? We just want to start everything off on the right foot. Thank you Moz. Just joined and my first post.

Are links from BBB on non-accredited business pages helping SEO?
I've been doing a lot of research on BBB and the site's value. I know you have to pay for accreditation as well as a link, and most search engine optimizers says it's worth it. I added a company to BBB in October, but I did not pay for accreditation or a link, and yet a link still appears on the business' BBB page. Is this link still a followed link? Does Google view it as an important link? If a non-paid link on BBB is still good, I don't see too many more benefits to BBB accreditation than the trust factor and possibly gaining an A+ ranking.

SEO Training Question
Hi Iv been asked iv to host a basic SEO training session for some employees who have never had any experience in SEO before. Obviously SEO covers so many things and it would be imposisble to run through everything in a single training session. I was curious as to what you guys think would be the best use of the time for the training session? Thanks in advance

SEO Question
If you Google - "San Diego DUI Lawyer" (a competitive term), this guys site comes up: sandiegoduiattorneys.weebly.com/san-diego-dui-lawyer.html Run his site in Opensite Explorer and you won't believe the results. This guy somehow has as much domain authority as Facebook, and maybe more than Moz. How is this possible? How is he getting all those links from random Weebly sites? I'm not saying I want to copy him, but I think it's highly problematic that somehow that site has been rigged to get all that link juice. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Toxic Link Removal-Better to Pay an SEO Firm or Can I Do It Myself?
Hi Jen: Recently an SEO audit from a reputable SEO firm identified almost 50% of the incoming links to my site as toxic, 40% suspicious and 5% of good quality. They are of the opinion that it is imperative to remove the toxic domains. The fee for toxic link removal is about $3,000.I would prefer to save the $3,000 but would prefer not to take the risk of screwing up my ranking if this is a complex procedure best left to SEO professionals. My assumption is that link removal will involve identifying the toxic domains, requesting removal and eventually submitting a Google disavow request. Can I do this myself or is there a big risk of screwing it up? Assuming it is safe for me to remove toxic links, would anyone suggest software of tools for doing so? Thanks so much.

How do i determine if an SEO person i hired is good and should continue on
I know SEO is important and i am hiring an SEO person, as well as company. however, they both seem to contradict each other and so im lost as to know who is good and bad. what should i look for in their work report, and what questions should i ask. Background: i have tried to read alot (100+ articles) on the new panda and penguin so at least i know what people are talking about without being clueless. So my site got hit recently with the updates and got penalised, and i think that is predominantly because of the backlink profiles, before being built too much around keywords. so my understanding is that backlinking now should be natural, diverse (many alt tags instead of a few), concentrate on branding and less on keywords. The person: she believes in branding, and acknowledge the problem with my previous backlink profile. so now she said the backlink ratio should be around 40-50% based on the brand. so she has been doing alot of backlinks wtih alt tags for my website url, name, as well as my name. She said once that ratio is close to that target of 40-50% i should see a jump in ranking, which woudl be in around a month of work. but here is my concern 1 - the other company said she is spamming, which kinda scarred me already 2 - while in principle, what she has said is backed up by my reading materials, it seems she only concentrate on three alt texts so far, my url, my business name, and my name. i thought they need to be diversified 3 - the links seem to come from alot of places. she said it does not need to be high quality now as we just need to get that ratio/profile correct, and then we can concentrate on the high quality links later. she is doing around 40 links per day. which apparently take 8 hours per day. 4 - i guess i worry that that if all these new links suddenly become spams later, does that mean i woudl need to either build more links to offset the more spam links, or have to spend more time removing bad links Please advise. is she performing spamming. how do i check her links/works. is there a tool. is it wise to build more links, or is it better to identify previous bad links and remove them? Thank you for your help.
