Geo targeting multiple locations organically

When targeting multiple cities for specific keyword phrases, do local links like Merchant Circle, & Yelp need to be present for each town?

Hi Kristopher,
Your question is a good one. If you do not have a physical address in a city, then, no, you should not be using these local platforms. Google and other local directories want actual physical locations in their indexes - not virtual offices, P.O. boxes, etc. Here is the language from Google's Places Quality Guidelines (http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528) that speaks to this:
Business Location: Use a precise, accurate address to describe your business location. Do not create a listing or place your pin marker at a location where the business does not physically exist. P.O. Boxes are not considered accurate physical locations.
So, anything other than this is a violation of the guidelines, and it's just good sense to represent your business in an accurate and truthful manner on the Internet. That being said, making use of Local SEO if you're an SEO company is somewhat of a moot point as Google stopped showing local results for web design and SEO companies in January of 2010. It is my understanding that this was partly based on their decision that these types of businesses are mainly virtual in nature (whether that's true or not), and also, heavy spamming of the vertical. So, you can't achieve true local rankings for this business model.
We've had similar questions here in recent times from Members in the SEO/design fields who want to be able to target numerous cities within a state. From what you've written, I believe this is your goal. Such efforts will have to be solely organic, and the task at hand is to find a reason to create content about your work in various geographic places. For example, you might have a page dedicated to your SEO or design projects for businesses in Buffalo, NY, and another page about your projects for clients in Long Island. You've got to find something really different to say about your work in each locale in order to have a reason to create such pages so that you end up with robust rather than thin or duplicate content.
Hope this helps!

Thank you Kane.
I do not have a office in the new location but I did add a address. I added UBL's basic service to help with the local directories. I have a good address, a unique phone number for the new location & I used a new domain name that forwards to the main domain. ex. " seonewyork.com" forwards to "seo.com"
Do you think using a new domain is the way to go?

They'll definitely help, both for Google+ Local listings, as well as localized organic listings (without a map in the SERP).
Do you have physical locations in those cities? Or are you trying to rank pages for those cities without having a physical presence? If you're trying to rank without the physical address, you'll have to compete without many of these local directories. Not impossible, but easier if you have the address to work with.

When working on navigation, is it best for product collections to appear under multiple menu headings or just the one that defines it the most?
We are an e-commerce site selling outdoor clothing/equipment and I am managing the SEO with only a years worth of experience under my belt! We are looking at changing the navigation as we are selling a bigger range of products and we would like to make it more user friendly. When looking at both crawlability and customer friendly navigation too, is it best to list product collections under whatever menu it applies to, or just the one that it best falls under. For example, 'climbing shoes', should that go under 'outdoor footwear' and 'climbing equipment' or just 'outdoor footwear'? Does it even matter from an seo perspective?! I know that being user-friendly is more important but just wondering if its less or more important for page rankings if its linked to from less or more pages internally. Thanks!

Has your site ever been targeted by malicious link building executed by a competitor?
I'm pretty sure one of my client's sites has been targeted by malicious black hat link building tactics employed by a competitor site. Over the last few weeks we've gotten 100s of super low quality spammy backlinks. No one has been doing link building, so the only thing I can think of is that competitor entered our URL into some spammy backlink building sites. Has anyone else experienced this? It's the real estate industry, so I wouldn't be surprised considering how competitive it is, but I'd love to hear your experiences.

Is it possible to do local SEO for 2 different business locations in same state?
Since you have to be consistent in all your review website information (business name, street, etc.) is it possible to have a website rank for both of their business locations which are about 50 miles from one another in the same state or do they have to pick just one location to promote offsite?

Multiple Listings in Larger City with Multiple Addresses?
My client's small biz is going after a highly competitive keyword phrase for a medium sized city. Question. Currently has 3 biz addresses. The oldest is farthest away from Geographic location we are now targeting. 1)Would I be best served to change all listings to newest address Or 2nd most common address and 2nd closest to geo-area Go with farthest but most established address which has been address listed on website for the past year. Domain name has been owned for a couple of years. When I look in getlisted.org oldest and farthest address most established has 55% completed, 2nd farthest is 23% and of course newest and latest but in-town is 0%. Thanks for ideas!

Multiple LInks from the same domain - how much benefit do they give?
I'm wondering how much added benefit there is to gaining multiple links from the same domain? For example when looking at a competitor in open site explorer I see they have 239 linking domains but 5,066 links. How much additional benefit are they getting over just having 239 links from 239 domains? Also how many links is an optimal number from a domain in that case before there become no more point seeking links from that domain? 5? 10? Thanks

Multiple same domain links on Open Site Explorer
In doing competitor link analysis on Open Site Explorer, I've noticed quite a few links coming from the same domain listed separately. This seems to be especially prevalent with Google directory listings. For example, I'll see a link to the site from google.hu/...., google.am/..., google.kz/..., etc. In some cases, it will be prefixed with an IP address, followed by the subfolder address. Correct me if I am wrong, but these seem to be all counting as separate root domains that are linking to the site. How is this done? Are directory submissions given to each country's google directory? Does an original DMoz listing get re-submitted to all of these? Just looking for some clarification on this and how it's accomplished. Thanks everyone!
