Does Google gropup similar phrases together as teh same search phrase ?
-
We have recently been doing a bit of Keyword research using Googles Adwords Keyword tool.
This highlighted many variations of a similar search phrase and indicated all had the same number of searches per month.
Sush as;
"web design in glasgow"
"website designers glasgow"
"website designer glasgow"
"glasgow web designers"If someone searches on Google for "web design in glasgow" will google rank pages optimised for "website designer glasgow" ?
Thank you.

Thank you for your response to this question. For a while now we have been designing and developing website solutions but not really paid much attention to SEO etc. We are now focussing much more on thsi not only from our own point of view but for our clients. During the searching for keyword phrases associated with what we regarded as the main search phrase "web design glasgow" it became apparent that Google was grouping various phrases together for the sake of their statistics. Your suggestion about using PPC with different terms is a good one. As you say this might be the best way to determine which of teh listed (and other) keyword phrases are the best. Thanks again.

Google does group phrases to a certain extent. The search results are supposed to be based on "show exact match first" then cascade down from there in terms of "closest but not exact" all the way down.
Since that criteria then gets re-sorted based on Google's individual site authority and value criteria, the results can get jumbled.
This is why it's vital to consider the most likely way your unique market thinks about your services and how THEY would be most likely to conduct a search. Because it's better to go with the variation(s) you think most resemble or match that thinking.
You gave a difficult example when it comes to evaluating that issue, because to me, all but the first one are viable as real world people actually looking to hire web designers. The 1st one may be good, but seems a bit less likely. Only real data studied over time can narrow down the best choice in terms of conversion potential. Yet it's important to consider.
This issue is a great way to use PPC ad testing to see which ads get the most clicks to a landing page - which of those then actually fill out a form, and which of those forms is more than just someone exploring as opposed to ready to purchase?

Why does this keyword have much greater volume in Bing Keyword Research Tool than Google AdWords Keyword Planner?
I'm using the Google AdWords keyword planner and Bing Webmaster Keyword Research tool. For both, I'm trying to get accurate search volume for the exact term "advertising sales". Over the last thirty days, Bing reports a volume of 5,988. Google's average monthly search volume is 880. Given the market share Google has, I would expect a much higher volume, especially when compared to Bing. Can you offer some ideas of why this might be happening?

Filler words like "for" in keyword phrase
Hey, I wonder what the effect of filler words like "on" or "for" is when I try to rank for a certain phrase. Here is an example, lets say i try to rank for "best apps iphone" but the grammatically correct usage in the headline or text is "best apps for iphone". Is there any difference or should I use the exact keyword without "for"? Thanks!

Google ranks better apps over articles
Hello, On my quest to recover from Goolge´s updates I found out that the serps show apps and software downloads ranking better than content (articles or similar) for one of my most popular keywords. When the ads above the fold update hit my site (I can only assume that because of the date) I lost about 50% of my traffic). This keyword dopped from the first or second position to a steady fifth or sixth page position. Today, I was trying to research which sites outranked me and to my surprise no result in the first 15 position was an article, just apps and software downloads. It is not that is wrong. Let´s say that we are talking about an area similar to instagram software (although it doesn´t rank in this keyword). I´m not asking about my site. I simply want to know if the web apps (social sites) and mobile apps are taking over the content in serps. Is it that now you can´t go for a high place in the rankings (for certain keywords) if you are not a social site or an app? Thanks!

Is there a way to identify the phrases and pages involved in your URLS receiving search visits?
Our client seems to get 20 - 30 visits a month to pages which people arrived on via a search, without visiting home page and navigating there. Is there a way we can identify both the phrases the person used to arrive at the page, and the page itself? The graph is tantalizing, but without deeper insight into what the phrases and pages were, we can't focus on the phrases in question. And we'd like to do this, because the phrase may represent potential long tail phrases we could use. Thanks! Eric.
