Wierd link
-
We have recently receive linek from one website. The site is quite very powerful for the word we try to rank, however the link is kind of wired. This is how it looks like: http://villasdiani.com/?db
The webmaster of the site said that he ads (?db) on the end so as we would see on our analytics the traffic from his site..
Also the link is from footer...is this good or it does not have value

Thank you very much Paul! His site http://dianibeach.com and our poor is http://villasdiani.com
Thank you so much for all this!

Would you be willing to tell me his actual website, July? That way I could make a specific recommendation. (You can send it in a Personal Message through SEOMoz here if you'd rather not list it publicly - just click on my name, and on my profile page you'll see the Private Message button)

Thank you so much Paul for the explanation! Unfortunately for me, the link is one every of his pages in the footer:-( so I guess it is pretty useless for our site ranking.
If I may ask one more question, What would be the best way to give us good link from his site so as he he would not loose traffic on us and we still get some value?
Thank you very much Paul!

He's a little confused about the right way to tag a link so it can be found in Analytics properly, July, but what he's doing isn't going to hurt. You can see the visit in your Analytics as a referral from his site, whether he adds that extra bit or not.
A footer link isn't considered as powerful by the Search Engines as an editorial link from right within the page's content. In addition, if the footer link appears on all (or a large number) of his pages, it has even less power. (and too many of these kinds of site-wide links form too many different sites can get you in trouble for "unnatural links".
That answer your questions?
Paul
P.S. The proper way to do what he's doing to allow you to track the links form his site would be to use proper Google URL tagging parameters to create the link (in which case the link would look something like
http://villasdiani.com/?utm_source=his-website&utm_medium=footer-link&utm_campaign=campaign-name. This would let yo look up those links in the Traffic Sources -> Sources -> Campaigns section of Google Analytics. You can find lots of info on how this works by searching "using utm parameters to track links in Google Analytics".

Link from a directory
Hi, im submitting a clients website to some directories. They are a dental practice and I'm adding them to this website http://goo.gl/Tvyabd Once i added the business to its directory it asked me to add a link (in so many words) back to its website from my clients website. Is this ok to do or is it seen as spam? Im confused about this as sometimes directories are free and sometimes they ask for a fee for it to be fast tracked to put it on the website. I always check the Domain authority of the websites and make sure they are relevant to the industry that I'm working in but again not sure if this would be seen as "paying" for links. Thanks Ade

Will short linking to my site affect SERPs attribution of inbound link?
Some brand partners are using their short links to link back to our site (like bit.ly but they have their own). They have a high domain authority and trust so we want that link back to be read by Google. When I downloaded all inbound links from Moz, this brand's site was not listed, making me worried that the inbound link isn't being seen or considered! Haven't been able to find any info on this...

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

Google Link Disavow and sites with extremely heavy but poor link metrics
Need help/opinions from the SEO's out there. I am working with a site that in the past hired an SEO company out of India. Over the course of their time together, this company submitted the clients url to tens of thousands of link exchanges and directories. Around the time of Penguin, the owners told me their inquiries dried up. Literally that same week they had a new website launched (designed by a local competitor) that really butchered the site. They were convinced the reduction in traffic/inquiries was due to the new site but I am convinced otherwise (suspect Penguin). Not only does the site need to be re-structured but their link portfolio needs to be diversified. Now on the plus side, the company caters and sponsors a number of events that earns them organic, relevant links. These are overshadowed by the tons of poor, irrelevant ones though. I read a few posts recently on the Google Link Disavow tool and to proceed slowly due to the unknown nature surrounding it. I have a good idea of what links are problematic and which ones are well served. However, the number of problematic links in my estimation is quite high (thousands). I am very hesitant to dive into Google Disavow and submit such a large number of requests. What are your thoughts? How would you proceed?
