Have we been penalised by Google?
-
Hello guys,
Looking for some help here hope someone will be able to point us to the right direction, we have been scratching our heads for months!
Basically our Google rankings and organic traffic from Google have dropped signficantly in the last 12 months. At one point we ranked as high as page 3 with the term "holiday lettings". Now we are on page 16, and sometimes not found at all... This has been the case for months now. Curiously, Bing and Yahoo have been much more generous to us, we have been and still consistently rank at No. 2 with the same term.
We are in the vacation rental industry - our website is www.alphaholidaylettings.com and most of the sites that rank above us are of much less relevancy, quality and authority. We just could not understand why we would rank so poorly on Google (both US and UK). Organic traffic has also dropped by more than 50% steadily in the last 12 months.
One thing we thought might have affected our site is the quality of content. Most content/listings on our site are user generated, and it is not uncommon for users to copy and paste details from an existing listing that they have on another site. Having said that, the same would apply to our competitors too. In this case, might Panda or Penguin have had any negative effects on our seo? We have been adding unique content to the site in the form of a blog and "Holiday Feature" articles.
Could the actual design/structure/coding of our pages contribute to our poor rankings too?
Any opinions or feedback is much appreciated!
Thanks guys,
Tom

Got you, thanks again Yiannis!

Hello Tom,
It is an advanced segment you can use in Google analytics which scans all the Ws keywords that brough traffic to your web site such as "how", "why", "what" etc....that way you can see questions people ask on the internet and capitalise in content opportunities. You can then check which one of these posts converted (for example more than 3 visits and goal conversions from Google analytic) and again write further content.
To start with create advanced segments of the 5Ws, select january-Today 2013 in google analytics, go to organic traffic and keywords and apply the segment. There you go
I can not attach a picture here but your segment should be:
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp Who
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp Why
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp What
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp How
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp When
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp Where
Include Keyword MatchinRegExp Can(I know more than 5 but I like including how and can too :-))

Thanks a lot Yiannis, your reply is certainly very helpful and much appreciated. It gives us faith to continue with writing content. Just one quick question, when you mentioned "5 Ws keywords", what do you mean by that?
Cheers,
Tom

Yes tom thats correct.
The idea of a press release is that you use it to reach your audience and not for link building. The fact that someone found that press release and decided to post/link it to his blog is totally ethical and you pretty much earned that link due to the "quality content" strategy you decided to implement.
In regards to your original query I jsut did a quick back link profile check on your web site and the term you mention is at 8% of your total link building profile. I checked the domains and they are mainly article directories and link submission web sites. While I understand this is a necessary evil I highly doubt you will rank for such a high profitable and competitive keywords "holiday lettings" by jsut doing that, you will need high authority web sites to link to your content. If you ask me my advise would be to carry on writing quality content, use contexual keywords along with your targeted keyword and things will pick up naturally. For example you must have data from your clients as to how your special works on particular seasons or top countries brining traffic, or high referal sites..You could maybe do a white paper based on this report. use google analytics not for keywords but to drug out intelligence data. 5 Ws keywords that generated good traffic or page depth visits is one example. See which content works best and capitilise on that
Hope I helped a bit!

Hi Yiannis,
Thanks for your reply. As far as I know, the links in our press releases are nofollow. I was told that by releasing quality content press releases via sites such as PR Web, it would have a positive impact on our seo. But if the links are nofollow, is it a practice worth pursueing?
I have also noticed that when the releases were picked up by other online outlets, the links have in some cases become "follow". I guess this is a good thing?
Tom

please make sure that the links in your press releases are Nofollow as google recently stated that the links on all PR sites should NOT pass any link juice. Check with your agency!

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. We are not flagged in Webmaster Tools as having any manual actions placed against the site, really lost as to what is causing the issues.
We are not currently doing any link-building, but have started doing some press release marketing. Not sure how much this would help I guess it will tell in time.

Hi,
I'd go into Webmaster tools for the affected site & see if you have any alerts in there. Also I think the quality of the customer content may be as you suspect an issue.
But your still listed so Is suspect you have not been google whacked just merely pushed down by better contnet. You may think about sourcing a cintnet strategist & give up on waiste of time activities like link building ( Not to assume you do this)
Dont worry with a bit of top contnet in there you climb back up!

Google Tag Manager for cross-domain tracking
Anybody experience with setting up Google Tag Manager to contain the Analytics script including cross domain tracking? We have a marketingwebsite .com / .com.br and an application running in a subdomain, but have always had some difficulties in getting the cross domain tracking working. Would be great to be able to exchange some experience with fellow Mozzers.

Universal Analytics: Why does Google Organic appear as Direct traffic?
Hi there, When I enter the site via Google Search and follow myself via Real-Time Analytics I appear an organic visitor (which is good). When I browse and visit the site I still am an organic visitor. However, as soon as I fill in the contact form (gravity forms) and land on the "thank you page" I appear as a direct visitor with Google as the source. Since I have the thank you page set-up as a goal, Analytics incorrectly attributes these conversions to the direct medium instead of the organic medium. The tracking code has been installed on all the pages and all conversions are being recorded. What is going on?

Getting google impressions for a site not in the index...
Hi all Wondering if i could pick the brains of those wise than myself... my client has an https website with tons of pages indexed and all ranking well, however somehow they managed to also set their server up so that non https versions of the pages were getting indexed and thus we had the same page indexed twice in the engine but on slightly different urls (it uses a cms so all the internal links are relative too). The non https is mainly used as a dev testing environment. Upon seeing this we did a google remove request in WMT, and added noindex in the robots and that saw the index pages drop over night. See image 1. However, the site still appears to getting return for a couple of 100 searches a day! The main site gets about 25,000 impressions so it's way down but i'm puzzled as to how a site which has been blocked can appear for that many searches and if we are still liable for duplicate content issues. Any thoughts are most welcome. Sorry, I am unable to share the site name i'm afraid. Client is very strict on this. Thanks, Carl image1.png

Longevity of robot.txt files on Google rankings
This may be a difficult question to answer without a ton more information, but I'm curious if there's any general thought that could shed some light on the following scenario I've recently heard about and wish to be able to offer some sound advice: An extremely reputable non-profit site with excellent ranking had gone through a re-design and change-over into WordPress. A robots.txt file was used during development on the dev site on the dev server. Two months later it was noticed through GA that traffic was way down to the site. It was then discovered that the robot.txt file hadn't been removed and the new site (same content, same nav) went live with it in place. It was removed and a site index forced. How long might it take for the site to re-appear and regain past standing in the SERPs if rankings have been damaged. What would the expected recovery time be?

Google Webmaster indicates robots.text access error
Seems that Google has not been crawling due to an access issue with our robots.txt
Reporting & Analytics | | jmueller0823
Late 2013 we migrated to a new host, WPEngine, so things might have changed, however this issue appears to be recent. A quick test shows I can access the file. This is the Google Webmaster Tool message: http://www.growth trac dot com/: Googlebot can't access your site January 17, 2014 Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 62 errors while attempting to access your robots.txt. To ensure that we didn't crawl any pages listed in that file, we postponed our crawl. Your site's overall robots.txt error rate is 8.8% Note the above message says 'over the last 24 hours', however the date is Jan-17 This is the response from our host:
Thanks for contacting WP Engine support! I looked into the suggestions listed below and it doesn't appear that these scenarios are the cause of the errors. I looked into the server logs and I was only able to find 200 server responses on the /robots.txt. Secondly I made sure that the server wasn't over loaded. The last suggestion doesn't apply to your setup on WP Engine. We do not have any leads as to why the errors occurred. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us. Google is crawling the site-- should I be concerned? If so, is there a way to remedy this? By the way, our robots file is very lean, only a few lines, not a big deal. Thanks!0 -
Accidental Link not being removed by Google WMT
I operate two sites for a client. One is a local business and one is their national business. I used the same template for both sites (with changes) but accidentally left a link in the footer to the local site. Now the local site is showing 12k backlinks from the national site. I removed the link over 2 weeks ago but it still shows up in Google WMT in the "Links to your Site" section. It goes to a coupon page and not a "targeted" page but 12k links to the local site is 6 TIMES what I had before. My question is: "Is there a way to get Google to remove the link from Google WMT?" More specifically force it. Like I said the link has been removed for over 2 weeks but it still shows up in the Local site's Incoming Links section of WMT. Thanks.

Tips for migrating Google News traffic?
We are about to relaunch a site that gets a lot of Google News traffic. We are not changing domain, but the site structure is changing greatly, with the URLs of both news index pages and articles being shaken up. Obviously, we've 301-ed every page to its closest equivalent on the new site. We've also got a news sitemap. As we are not changing domain, is there anything further we need to do to help protect our Google News traffic. On a related note, does anyone have a relaible way of measuring traffic from Google News listings in universal search?

Google parameter
All Welcome! In the old interface, Google Analytics, you can find rare queries (organic traffic) in such a setting: ^ ([^] +) {5.50} [^] + $ (where 5.50 - spaces between words). As an option to use the new interface Google Analytics? This option does not work there?
