Huge spike in referral traffic from international domains
-
We have recently experienced a huge spike in referral traffic from .fr domains (we are in the UK).
They all lead to our 404 page. Its been going on for the last 3 days, and its still happening with about 20 visitors browsing the site from these domains at any one time, staying approx 3-7 seconds and then bouncing.
The top domain appears to be a parked page. We cant see any obvious links or ads coming from any of these .fr domains and they are quite irrelevant to our sites industry anyway, which leads me to believe these may not be real visitors.
Any advice on what may be causing this? And how to stop it?
Needless to say none of these referrals have converted.

Good point, Gianluca! I hadn't thought of that.

The same Tim wrote, but adding an extra step: check out if your site suffers some sort of vulnerabilities, like cloaking that could justify the unexpected interest from international users.

I suppose it's possible to block that traffic through your server, but unless it's costing you a lot of money on bandwidth, I don't think it's necessary to go that far.
Instead, I'd recommend just excluding that referring domain from your traffic reports. If you're using Google Analytics, you can do this by adding a filter to the profile - https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034842?hl=en
Hope this helps!

International SEO Mobile directory
I was wondering, What if I went with international sub-directory route (not ccTLD), for example: sitename.com/fr (fr being france)...But the question is, what's the best practice for MOBILE?sitename.com/mobile/frORsitename.com/fr/mobileORm.sitename.com/fr Again, ccTLD is not an option (currently, sites are in ccTLD but we are now transitioning to sub folders)Now, the next question is WHY is it best practices for it to be sitename.com/mobile/fr or sitename.com/fr/mobile or m.sitename.com/fr ? My local traffic has increased but USA traffic decreased..I dont know why!!
Hi Guys, A sticky one for ye. I have recently updated my site selling Jewelry in April of this year. Overall, Local Irish organic traffic has been stronger than ever in the first half of 2015. Yet in the USA, since March it's been at it's weakest for years, declining month-on-month. In terms of Organic Traffic for May & June, there's been a 30% increase in visitors from Ireland when compared to last year. Yet for the USA - the biggest market for us- there has been a 39% decrease this year over the same dates. It's the same for language demographics. Big decrease for en-US, but increases for en-IE and en-GB. It's not just the US. The site has taken a hit in Canada, Australia etc.So domestically the website looks to be performing better than ever before since the HTTPS switch, but it has taken a big hit internationally in our key market. We are targeting USA in search console, not changed any of the content in the site however he have added an SSL cert to make the whole site HTTPS like google said :)Any pointers are welcome

Shall I automatically redirect international visitors from www.domain.com to e.g. www.domain.com/es? What is best SEO practice?
We have chosen the one domain approach with our international site having different language versions in subdirectory of main domain:
International SEO | | lcourse
www.domain.com/es
www.domain.com/it
etc. What is SEO-wise best practice for implementing international index pages. I see following options: entering www.domain.com will display without redirection the index page in language of user (e.g based on IP or browser) in www.domain.com
Example: www.booking.com entering www.domain.com will always show English index page.
Additionally one may display a message in the header if IP from other country with link to other language version.
Example: www.apple.com entering www.domain.com will always redirect automatically to country specific subdirectory based on IP
Example: www.samsung.com Any thoughts/suggestions on what may be best solution from a SEO perspective? For a user I believe options 1) & 3) are preferable.0 -
Which hreflang tag to use for .eu domain
Hi there, We're trying to solve a problem with one of our domains, we have a .eu CCTLD and we're trying to implement hreflang tags. On our US and UK sites, we use "en-us" and "en-gb", but it's not clear how to approach this european problem, as there is not a "en-eu" tag. The site is in English, but serves several European countries speaking different languages. What's the best hreflang code to use in this situation? Any help much appreciated, Thanks!

International Landing Page Strategy
Hello, I'm looking for some insight in an area that I don't have much experience in - hoping the community can help! We are a healthcare staffing company serving clients in the U.S. (www.bartonassociates.com). We are interested in attracting clients in Australia and New Zealand. I'm wondering if anyone as experience with best practices for doing so (both from an SEO and PPC perspective). Would it be best to purchase .au and .nz domains for these landing pages and link back to our US site for more information (or even recreate a modified version of our US site for .au and .nz). My concern here is duplicate content issues, among other things. Or, would it be better to create Australia and New Zealand focused landing pages on our US site and drive PPC there? My concern here is that we would never get organic traffic from Australia and New Zealand to our US site, in light of the competition. Also, the messaging would be a bit mixed if targeting all three countries. Our core term is "locums" and "locum tenens". Greatly appreciate any insight from you guys. Thanks, Jason
