Help with a Link Building Audit
-
A customer wants to have a better position with a keyword (he has already a great position, but he wants more...). So he need a bit of extra link building to have better position in serp(this niche is very competitive so on page is not sufficient).
He asked me to do a Link Building Analysis to find good link opportunities.
How can i structure a good report? I need something like a Seo Audit for link building. That's my idea:
Identify what are the business objectives
Identify the brand strenghts and weakness
Find the strongest competitors and understand their tactics
See what are the top links that they have
Copy their best strategies
Find new strategies not used by the competitors
What else i can do for my link building audit? -
Thank you Calin! Great answer!

Hi Maximillian21,
I am going to echo much of what Patrick has already shared, I believe he provided excellent resources for you to follow. However, I wanted to address the three points in your second message.
-
I think any SEO consultant can attest to the fact that a large part of our job is education. If your client believes building a bunch of links is the only solution to building better rankings I would suggest taking a moment to educate him/her. Believe me when I say this will save you the headache down the road if the singular link building strategy doesn't have the desired result.

Earning links in any niche is difficult, especially today. As a service provider, it's a challenge to tie your services directly to the quantity of links you acquire. It's also, in my opinion, not the best long term strategy for you or the client. Link building is fickle. In some cases, a few directory submissions can have a positive impact on your rankings. In other case, even the most authoritative links seemingly do very little.
As Patrick alluded to, by layering other services, such as content marketing and social, you provide additional exposure for the business, traffic to the website and value in the services you provide. It's a challenge to be sure, however, I would be hesitant to initiate an SEO campaign that is focused purely on rankings, without at least considering content and social.
In this day and age, most people on the Q & A forum will recommend a holistic approach to an SEO campaign.
- I believe your original list and the additional details provided by Patrick will serve you well.
A few additional questions I would include:
- What differentiates your business from your competitors (you may find a few gold nuggets you can use in content)
- Do you have resources, media, graphics, etc (can you quickly build resources from existing content).
- What are your customer's main pain points (can you build something to solve this problem).
- Do you have any partnerships, sponsorships or memberships that could provide a backlink (this tends to be low hanging fruit)?
- Where do your customers hang out online? (are there popular forums where you could distribute your content).
These are just a few additional ideas. Best of luck with your project.

Thank you Patrick! Your advice is very helpful! I need some explanations, if you can help me you will have my eternal gratitude
My issues with that strategy is this:
-
My customer know very little about Seo, he thinks that having a bunch of extra link is sufficient to boost the rankings...the strategy that you proposed need other persons (a social media manager, a content marketer etc.) and i'm sure that he are mentally ready to pay so much
-
My niche is particular (=is a niche of automotive). It's not easy to earn natural links for this niche. Because the majority of blogs of rental in my country is owned by competitors, and i suspect that many customers pay also to have their brand mentioned on the autoritative sites of our indutry to pay to have your brand mentioned in automotive blogs...so you can image that is not easy to create a link earning strategy.
-
So i need to interview my customer to gain information. What information i have to know from him?

Hi there
I only say this because I don't want you banking on acquiring links as the only way to boost ratings - there is SO much more that goes into increasing rankings than acquiring links - ultimately those tactics acquire links themselves. I put my thoughts below.
Your process should be:
-
Identify business goals and objectives
-
Align with customer and target audience goals (build a Venn Diagram)
-
What unique value do you provide?
-
Now, how do you best relay that value?
-
Identify industry trends
-
News
-
Seasonalities
-
Conferences
-
etc.
-
Identify content / content types that get the most traction
-
Topics & variations
-
Videos
-
Images
-
Guides
-
How tos
-
Blog
-
etc.
-
Create an online experience that caters to your target audience needs & goals
-
Create an online experience that is dconsistent with your business voice and tone
-
Distribute content where your audience is
-
Social
-
Partnership opportunities
-
Business listings
-
Email
-
Blogs
-
Set benchmarks to track progress
-
Landing pages
-
Time on site
-
Bounce rates
-
CTR
-
Rankings
-
Impressions
-
Conversion rates
-
Check OSE, GWT, and Majestic to track links acquired
-
Use Moz Analytics and GWT to track rankings
-
Rinse and repeat
I understand the desire to acquire links and boost your rankings, but you have to acquire links in a natural and organic process. You also have to remember that your website is completely different than your competitors. If you copy their strategies and links, are you really separating your yourself from them and offering unique value? Remember, you don't want to be the best, you want to be the ONLY. Everyone can claim to be the "best", but copying strategies don't get you there.
The only way you can find new strategies is by learning who you are as a company, who your audience is, building & distributing content that speaks to your targets, and measuring & tweaking your process to more fully fulfil needs and goals.

Help identifying cause for total rank loss
Hello, Last week I noticed one of my pages decreased in rank for a particular query from #8 to #13. Although I had recently made a few minor edits to the page (added an introductory paragraph and left-column promo to increase word count), I thought the reason for the decrease was due to a few newly ranked pages that I hadn't seen before. In an attempt to regain my original position, I tried to optimize the meta title for the singular form of the word. After making this change, I fetched and rendered the page as Google (status = partial) and submitted the page for indexing (URL only, not including on-page links). Almost immediately after submitting, the page dropped from #13 out of the top 50. I've since changed the meta title back to what it was originally and let Google crawl and index the page on its own, but the page is still not in the top 50. Could the addition of the page description and left column promos tipped the scales of keyword stuffing? If I change everything back to the way it was originally, is it reasonable to think I should regain my original position below the new pages? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

SERPs Help
Hey Mozzers, Please can someone advise? I manage the on-line content for an estate of Gyms in the UK. We had an existing gym location in Birmingham - www.nuffieldhealth.com/gyms/birmingham and 5 months ago we opened a new location in Birmingham - www.nuffieldhealth.com/gyms/birmingham-central. The 2 pages have different in-page content, different H1's, different title tags, different citations in page both have a few back links from different root domains, however the 2nd page (birmingham-central) does not rank in the top 50 results even though our domain is strong that the vast majority of results? Our original page (/gyms/birmingham) also slipped from page 1 in SERPs to the bottom of page 2 when the second Birmingham gym page was deployed?? I am guessing Google does not know which page to serve in SERPs, bud i am at a lose as to how to fix this issue. Can anyone please advise?? Regards Ben

Website rankings plummeted after a negative SEO attack - help!
Hello Mozzers A website of a new client (http://bit.ly/PuVNTp) use to rank very well. It was on the top page for any relevant search terms in its industry in Southern Ontario (Canada). Late last year, the client was the victim of a negative SEO attack. Thousands upon thousands of spammy backlinks were built (suspected to be bought using something like Fiverr). The links came from very questionable sites or just low quality sites. The backlink growth window was very small (2,000 every 24 hours or so). Since that happened that site has all but disappeared from search results. It is still indexed and the owner has disavowed most of the bad backlinks but the site can't seem to bounce back. The same happened for another site that they own (http://bit.ly/1tErxpu) except the number backlinks produced was even higher. The sites both suffer from duplicate content issues and at one point (in 2012) were de-indexed due to the very spammy work of a former SEO. They came back in early 2013 and were fine for some time. Thoughts?

Inbound Links Inquiry for a New Site
For a site that is only one to two months old, what is considered a natural amount of inbound links if you're site offers very valuable information, and you have done a marketing push to get the word out about your blog? Even if you are receiving backlinks from authority websites with high DA, does Google get suspicious if there are too many inbound links during the first few months of a sites existence? I know there are some sites that blow up very fast and receive thousands of backlinks very quickly, so I'm curious to know if Google puts these kind of sites on a watchlist or something of that nature. Or is this simply a good problem to have?

Competition Link Metrics Analysis - Do you have any suggestions ?
My sub-pages are ranking well, but Homepage isn't ranking well for the keywords I'd like it to. It used to in the past. My site - njhypnotherapy.com used to rank (#2-5) 1st page in google for many keywords. In Sep/Oct I noticed my homepage ranking drop dramatically for the main keywords. Well, I made some foolish decisions and I'm trying to clean up the mess. Low quality links, duplicate content...etc I rewrote most of the content, removed unnecessary pages, removed as many low quality links, and used disavow for the rest. It's been a 2 Weeks now. I noticed a lot of improvements in my sub-pages. From #50 to #20. Not Bad. My homepage still isn't ranking. Any suggestions to improve? Btw, I've included my link metrics below if it helps 🙂 Thank You metricks.png

How to ignore spam links to page?
Hey Moz pals, So for some reason someone is building thousands of links to my websites (all spam), likely someone doing negative seo on my site. Anyway, all these links are pointing to 1 sub url on my domain. That url didn't have anything on it so I deleted the page so now it comes up with a 404. Is there a way to reject any link that ever gets built to that old page? I don't want all this spam to hurt my website. What do you suggest?

What is your SEO agency doing in terms of link building for clients?
What are you or your SEO agency doing for your client's link building efforts? What are you (or the agency) doing yourself, or out-sourcing, or having the client do for link building? If a new client needs some serious link building done, what do you prescribe and implement straight off the bat? What are your go-to link building tactics for clients? What are the link building challenges faced by your agency in 2013/2014? What's working for your agency and what's not? Does your agency work closely with the client's marketing department to gain link traction? If so, what are collaborating on? What else might you be willing to share about your agencies link building practices? Thanks

Best Link Building Practices to Avoid Over Optimizing
With all the new over opting talk, one of the things mentioned is having the same anchored text linking to a page over and over without variation. Is there a good estimate on how many external linking in keywords should be exact versus how many should be in variation? Also, keeping value of pages links in mind. Would it be best to use [Exact] phrase for the higher PR sites or more relevant higher traffic sites? and save the long tail or keyword variation text for the lesser valued sites. When to use exact phrase and when to long tail is my question/discussion I always stay relevant in my link building, and all my links are liking within context. Because I know that relevancy has been an important factor. After watching this video from Matt Cutt's http://youtu.be/KyCYyoGusqs I assume relevancy is becoming even more of an important factor.
