Technical Infrastructure to reach multiple C class domains for portfolio
-
Community,
We have an online portfolio of about 40+ different infotainment products/websites. Naturally we promote the sites across each other; linking from different class domains is suspected to increase the impact the cross linkages can have from an SEO perspective. We would like o see what technical infrastructure approaches marketers with similar conditions use to reach a large set of different C class IPs for SEO benefits givne their main server infrastructure comes out of one computing center = 1 IP class.
What we experimented with in the past have been:
- small cost-efficient virtual servers across different domain providers for static sites
- leverage CDN providers like Cloudfront to mask different IPs per domain
- use forward proxies like Varnish on dumb servers to forward request for dynamic sites
- ask hosting providers to host individual servers in different computing centers
- leverage cloud-based machines for easy provisioning across different hosting providers (not necessarily cheap)
Any other technical infrastructure processes out there we should be looking at?

I'll leave some thoughts, with the caveat that I haven't bothered doing stuff like this in many years because the cost structure only makes sense if you're going to build 40 great sites (eg sites making more than a few hundred dollars per month), and I'd rather spend more time on fewer sites.
I think most of the people doing this effectively are probably using option number 1 or slight variations, and not wasting their time on building any sites that can't cover their individual hosting costs. In other words, if the new site can't cover an incremental $10-50/month hosting expense, it's not worth your time to build it in the first place. With this route, you can also centralize control of the decentralized sites with a tool like ManageWP assuming it doesn't leave public footprints (like /wp-content/plugins/ URLs), but it'd still be all Wordpress site footprints.
At the scale you're trying to do this at, it would be pretty easy to "blow your cover" with extensive interlinking of the sites, shared access to GA & GWT between any of the sites, shared registrar dates & contact info (or shared registrars at all), and like 20 other server & CMS-level footprints. I'll assume you've covered all of those bases if you're at the stage of testing ways to centralize your hosting, but it's worth bringing it up for anyone else who is trying to take this approach.
I would be skeptical that the CDN option would work. Unless I'm mistaken, the sites would still need to have the same nameservers before the CDN delivered any content, and any search engine could plainly see that.
Not sure about the Varnish method.
Most of the hosting providers you'll talk to don't want to give you class-C IP addresses, because they spend a lot of money to acquire more IP addresses over time, and the type of customers asking for more Class-C IP addresses are typically mediocre hosting customers.
Just my two cents. You probably won't get too many replies on here, because most of the people doing this effectively don't feel like sharing their methods. Blackhat World or Wicked Fire will probably get you more candid responses, but your question is pretty specific, so I don't anticipate too many people willing to describe their full stack or workflow in detail.

New domain or subdirectory?
I noticed my domain authority has dropped slightly in the recent update, and it has me re-thinking a strategy for a website I just recently launched. I purchased the domain name kansasisbeautiful.com about a year ago and have been working on building it for most of that time. Earlier in August, I went ahead and launched it. However, towards the end of the development of the website, I decided to just put it in a subdirectory of my parent company (my photography business) at mickeyshannon.com/kansas and redirected the kansasisbeautiful.com domain to the subdirectory. mickeyshannon.com is my photography business website. The Kansas website has it's own distinct design, but is powered completely by my photography. I created it for a few purposes, including promoting tourism to the state of Kansas and to publish a book on Kansas travel next year, but one of it's main goals is also to help sell my photography prints. I decided to put it in a subdirectory (mickeyshannon.com/kansas) as I had hoped it might drive more traffic into buying photo prints if it lived on my main website. However, I've been re-thinking my strategy and have been wondering if I'm competing against myself too much. Many of my photography prints have the name of a location in them and have their own URL per photo (for example: "Flint Hills Spring Sunrise" is at http://www.mickeyshannon.com/photo/flint-hills-spring-sunset/). It makes me wonder if the new Kansas travel website page for the Flint Hills (http://www.mickeyshannon.com/kansas/flint-hills/) is competing for that keyword. Would I be better moving mickeyshannon.com/kansas to kansasisbeautiful.com? I was worried having so many backlinks back to my photography site would send up red flags with Google as if the kansasisbeautiful.com website was just a spammy website created to push traffic to mickeyshannon.com when it really has it's own purpose. Any thoughts on whether using the domain name or keeping it at the subdomain level is better? Hopefully that made sense. Thanks, Mickey

Domain Authority... http://www.domain.com/ vs. http://domain.com vs. http://domain.com/
Hey Guys, Looking at Page Authority for my Site and ranking them in Decending Order, I see these 3 http://www.domain.com/ | Authority 62 http://domain.com | Authority 52 http://domain.com/ | Authority 52 Since the first one listed has the highest Authority, should I be using a 301 redirects on the lower ranking variations (which I understand how works) or should I be using rel="canonical" (which I don't really understand how it works) Also, if this is a problem that I should address, should we see a significant boost if fixed? Thanks ahead of time for anyone who can help a lost sailor who doesn't know how to sail and probably shouldn't have left shore in the first place. Cheers ZP!

Is my domain scorched earth from Penguin?
http://pisoftware.com was never a huge leader of traffic, but it ranked top 5 for my money keyphrases, and was bringing consistent quality visitors. As traction went up, that traffic just became more valuable. I was happy. Then Penguin came along, and made me sad. 60% loss in traffic, I stayed calm. I disavowed. I sent emails asking for links to come down. I atoned for my sins (of the distant, distant past - I know better now) - and waited. Never a hard penalty, never an email from Google - just rankings that got hammered. From #3 for my best keyphrase for #25 today. I write content, and I try and write it better all the time. I try to make it valuable. I leverage social media to the extent that I can. I do outreach. I'm trying to be patient, but it's hard when the software is awesome, and so few people see it. I'm considering starting over - or maybe even just creating another domain to use if this one never comes back. I wonder on the thoughts of experts. At MozCon I talked to a lot of people in the same boat, and it seems we are all taking similar steps. So the questions: 1. Should I start over? Or stay the course? 2. What has worked for others - what seems to have been the most valuable in getting back on the rise? 3. Thoughts on the site as it is now? I've worked lately on speed, mobile rendering, etc - and it seems responsive and solid to me. Thanks in advance, you crazy bunch of Mozzers you. Kelly

Does it make sense to combine multiple news sites under one domain?
My company operates multiple news site brands across several markets and typically operates one website per market/brand. We've been advised that in the case of one of the newer markets, where each brand might only be publishing 3 articles a week, that combining all that market's brands under one domain will drive higher traffic from search because Google values higher article flow. Getting this done will be a lot of work. Is the juice worth the squeeze? And assuming we get the UX right and execute 301 redirects correctly, are there major risks to search traffic?

Renaming primary domain advice
Hi, We have a site www.anteater.com.au. It's a pest control company here in Sydney Australia. Now I've just renamed it to www.anteaterpestcontrolsydney.com.au yesterday for SEO purposes. I'm doing 301 redirects. My question is, is it worth it to do this? Will we have any advantage in the long run with just this URL change? Or would it be better to just leave it as is as www.anteater.com.au Any comments would be appreciated. Cheers.

Penalty for using expired domain?
I was wondering if anyone has any experience using dropped/expired domains with old "clean" backlinks for new sites. Is there be a penalty for doing this (with good intent)? Worth a reconsideration request?
