Citation, Google Plus and SEO questions
-
Hi, I have a website www.gemslearninginstitute.com. We offer different after school programs for kids located in Canada. I have a very basic knowledge of SEO. I have a few questions. Just wondering if someone can please help me.
We offer UCMAS Mental Math Program, Tutoring and Chess School/Coaching and runs a Chess Club. I would like to boost my google ranking and get more local traffic.
1- My citation is not consistent. Which program should I use to correct the citation and delete duplicate or inconsistent listing automatically.
2 - Should I do the citation with my company name only “GEMS Learning Institute” or Should I do like this “GEMS learning Institute – UCMAS-Tutoring-Chess”. Which one is better?
3- Right now I have two different google plus business pages. One with the name of “GEMS Learning Institute” and the second one is UCMAS. Should I have only one page as GEMS and delete the UCMAS.
4- I am not sure how to check if my site is penalized by google.
5- How can I measure things which are working on not?
Can you please recommend next steps should I take after doing citation to improve the ranking?
Thanks in advance and appreciate help.

Hi Faisal,
I'm so sorry that Moz Local doesn't support Canada at this time. For citation assistance in Canada, Whitespark.ca is probably the most high-regarded service. You might want to check out their offerings, and nice to know they are fellow Canadians.

If you end up wanting to DIY, the Canadian Local Search Ecosystem infographic helps show you the places to submit. It's a little out of date, but if you can figure out the current version of each source and submit to them you should be ok.
I did one in 2014, (I usually do non-local SEO), and at that time it was hard to find the Yellow Pages option to just submit without buying an ad, but it's there, keep looking.

Yeah I have seen some good reviews on their services. You can check it out some of their reviews on g2 crowd. I think that would be a good starting point and just make sure to stay consistent.

Hi Jordan,
Thank you for the response. It really helps.
I am located in Canada and Moz Local does not support Canada Local directories at the moment. Does the bright local be another good option?. They support Canadian local directories as well.

1 . I would recommend going to Moz local - > Check Listing - > and see how you show up in local directories
At first glance, I see you have a google + account but are missing some other major ones. I would recommend using Moz's local feature to bulk upload your citations to all major local directories to keep consistency.
2. I would do the citation with the company name only 'Gems Learning Institute' short and more memorable.
3. I would get rid of the other Google + page just keep 'GEM's Learning Institute'
4. Set up a Google Webmasters account and keep an eye on your rankings and traffic for unexcepted drops. I do not believe Google will send personal messages if you are being penalized unless they do a manual check. You can dig deeper into your site's health by putting your URL in Moz's opensite explorer and running and crawl test.
Hope this helps some!

What do you think of these profile links for SEO?
In my Google Search Console today, I saw a link from Creative Market. In Moz last week I saw a link from Instructables. In Moz, they have high numbers. DO you think these type of profiles have a big impact? https://artists.spotify.com/c/artist/3N1BM4dOORzK8BF6DrkEDU/profile#about (Moz-50, ahrefs-14) https://creativemarket.com/julie.gallaher (Moz-36, Ahrefs-12) https://www.instructables.com/member/jazzmansac (Moz-42, Ahrefs-13) https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/users/907261 (Moz-50, Ahrefs-25) https://www.are.na/julie-gallaher (Moz-25, Ahrefs-11) They all look to be do follow links

2 backlinking questions
I've got 2 questions regarding backlinking. 1 - I recently watched a webinar saying I should never get backlinks from any sites lower than a PR 3. However, I have found some relevant websites to our niche that are lower than that. We have recently set-up a new website that currently has a PR 0. Bearing that in mind do you think it was still be good for SEO to try and get links from the lower PR sites to build up our own PR? 2 - Has anyone found out what Google thinks of gaining links from domains hosted in other countries? For example, our websites are hosted in the UK, does it look suspicious to search engines if we have links from USA or other countries? Thanks

Few questions regarding onsite content?
1. How important is having the keywords you are targeting on the page? Lets say you rank position 10 for 'Plumbing Services London' but you don't actually use the word 'London' at all in the page copy, what kind of effect could you expect if you added the word in the content? Bit of a silly question really, I know it would have some effect but how important is it really? 2. What kind of effect would adding a blog with lets say 500 words of great content twice a week have on rankings? If you anchor text linked out of the copy would this alone help with ranking or is the reason for adding a blog to just use it as link bait to pull in more links, thus rankings are only effected when the blog starts to gain links?

Question about ranking and links
Hi, Some back ground info first: My DA/PA is 42, the competitors who show up in the search engines for the term I am after have DA/PA 55/60. I have been creating anchor text links which target the term im after through guest blogging usually blogs with DA/PA 40+, I did this consistently with a guest post every 3 days for about a month so that's around 10 guest posts. And I also did some brand name blog comments, but these were no-follow and added sig to some forums. This moved me from page 5 to page 1, position 4. I then stopped and over the last 3 weeks it slipped to position 6 then to position 8. The competition doesn't look to actively target this term looking at the data from opensite explorer there main anchor text is there brand names. Why would I be slipping through the results? Not moaning just want to understand why so I can counter it. I was thinking about going for social signals through a blog to help.

Link building / baiting in the Google zoo
I work for a consultancy, and in the past most of our links have been acquired by giving away privacy statements etc for websites, including a link back in the body of the document, and making it a licensing requirement that the link be kept. We're launchinga new site. We want this one to be whiter-than-white, and would appreciate some advice on the following options. Option 1: no links Remove the links from the documents, and don't require links for the use of the documents. Leave a non-linking credit in the documents. Perhaps ask nicely for links from other pages. Option 2: links on other pages Remove the links from the documents, but make it a licensing requirement that users will link to our site from another page on their site. I appreciate that most won't, but some will. Option 3: retain the links Keep the links in the document, using domain name (with and without http and www) and business name anchor text. Option 4: script the links Use scripts to generate randomized links in the documents, so that no two are the same, but with relevant linking text for the most part. We're risk-adverse with the new site, and it will pick up some links "naturally". We're therefore tending toward option 1, on the basis that it may well generate as many links as option 2. Which of these options would you choose? Are there any other options we should be considering?

Does it affect SEO of how quickly you get in-bound links?
We have undertaken a very aggressive in-bound linking campaign. I have a whole team of people working to get in-bound links to our site. But I dont want to cause any red flags to the search engines on how quickly we get all of these in-bound links. Will they notice or flag our site if they see a quick rise of in-bound links? Thanks.
