Interest in optimise Google Crawl

Hello,
I have an ecommerce site with all pages crawled and indexed by Google.
But I have some pages with multiple urls like : www.sitename.com/product-name.html and www.sitename.com/category/product-name.html
There is a canonical on all these pages linking to the simplest url (so Google index only one page). So the multiple pages are not indexed, but Google still comes crawling them.
My question is : Did I have any interest in avoiding Google to crawl these pages or not ?
My point is that Google crawl around 1500 pages a day on my site, but there are only 800 real pages and they are all indexed on Google. There is no particular issue, so is it interesting to make it change ?

Have you no indexed the pages too? That may help to make sure that they aren't being crawled if that's concerning you. May at least give Google another signal not to crawl those pages.
Obviously it's not a catch all as there's only so much you can do to tell Google not to crawl a page. Sometimes if the alternative page is linked to internally (which it sounds like it is), then it will automatically crawl it even though you've said it has a canonical on it as you're showing that the page is important to your site.
May be worth testing a few pages to see if it has an impact.

From my experience, the best results I was ever able to achieve for a Client is when we consolidated all URLs to a single URL solution. Canonicals are amazing, no doubt. But I've experienced a canonical structure being ignored if there are instances where the canonical structure isn't 100% 'correct.'
If there is a way that you can have your website navigation & internal/XML sitemap reinforce your preferred URL, that would certainly reduce the number of URLs Google would crawl. Then, if you permanently (301) redirect all the now non-navigable URLs to the single preferred URL, you should see a significant boost in traffic (from consolidating all of the authority into a single page, now reinforced throughout your entire website).
If that's not possible, and you have to have multiple URLs within your site for budget/platform constraints, then yes, let Google crawl them. Otherwise the algo won't be able to see your canonical tag across them.
So in short: If you have a means to reduce the number of duplicates and redirect them - awesome. If you don't have a means to reduce duplicates, opening them up to Google is good, too.

Product Pages not indexed by Google
We built a website for a jewelry company some years ago, and they've recently asked for a meeting and one of the points on the agenda will be why their products pages have not been indexed. Example: http://rocks.ie/details/Infinity-Ring/7170/ I've taken a look but I can't see anything obvious that is stopping pages like the above from being indexed. It has a an 'index, follow all' tag along with a canonical tag. Am I missing something obvious here or is there any clear reason why product pages are not being indexed at all by Google? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Update I was told 'that each of the product pages on the full site have corresponding page on mobile. They are referred to each other via cannonical / alternate tags...could be an angle as to why product pages are not being indexed.'

Crawl Issue for Deleted Pages
Hi, sometimes, I just delete a page and not necessarily want to make a 404 to another page. So Google Webmaster Tools shows me 108 'not found' pages under 'Crawling Errors'. Is that a problem for my site?

Google and Product Description Tabs
How does Google process a product page with description tabs? For example, lets say the product page has a tab for Overview, Specifications, What's In the Box and so on. Wouldn't that content be better served in one main product description tab with the tab names used as (htags) or highlighted paragraph separators? Or, does all that content get crawled as a single page regardless of the tabs?

Google Plus Authorship
Situation Description: I have a website called Website A. I wish to migrate alot of the content from Website A to Website B. Website B will be on a completely different domain name and environment. Authors of Website A will act as contributing authors for Website B. It is also possible that other contributing authors of other websites C and D commit to writing content on Website B. Questions (1) Does it make sense to create a google plus profile under [email protected] and link from content on websiteB to their google plus profile under [email protected]? (2) Does AuthorRank affect PageRank? If yes, if I take the above approach would websiteA be effected or websiteB since the content writers of websiteA are contributing to websiteB? (3) Is it ok for userA to have a corporate google plus profile assuming he might also have another google plus profile under a different address? I always think it make sense that there exists a google plus profile at an employee level and another google plus profile at a personal level. (4) If an employee leaves the company, do I leave his/hers Google Plus profile alive? The fact that no more content would be published under that particular profile, would that negatively effect author rank over time? (5) Another interesting observation is that UsaToday, CNN etc do not use authorship? No authors link to their twitter profile or google plus profile. Shouln't they be doing this in terms of author rank or is author rank not that important? Thank you

Why will google not index my pages?
About 6 weeks ago we moved a subcategory out to becomne a main category using all the same content. We also removed 100's of old products and replaced these with new variation listings to remove duplicate content issues. The problem is google will not index 12 critcal pages and our ranking have slumped for the keywords in the categories. What can i do to entice google to index these pages?
