Fetch and render partial result could this affect SERP rankings [NSFW URL]
-
Moderator's Note: URL NSFW
We have been desperately trying to understand over the last 10 days why our homepage disappears for a few days in the SERPS for our most important keywords, before reappearing again for a few more days and then gone again! We have tried everything. Checked Google webmaster - no manual actions, no crawl errors, no messages. The site is being indexed even when it disappears but when it's gone it will not even appear in the search results for our business name. Other internal pages come up instead. We have searched for bad back links. Duplicate content. We put a 301 redirect on the non www. version of the site. We added a H1 tag that was missing. Still after fetching as Google and requesting reindexing we were going through this cycle of disappearing in the rankings (an internal page would actually come in at 6th position as opposed to our home page which had previously spent years in the number 2 spot) and then coming back for a few days. Today I tried fetch and render as Google and was only getting a partial result. It was saying the video that we have embedded on our home page was temporarily unavailable. Could this have been causing the issue? We have removed the video for now and fetched and rendered and returned a complete status. I've now requested reindexing and am crossing everything that this fixes the problem. Do you think this could have been at the root of the problem?
If anyone has any other suggestions the address is NSFW https://goo.gl/dwA8YB

Hi Gemma,
We are having EXACTLY the same issue. We keep appearing and disappearing for some keywords (while the URL is still indexed). Also in your case when we appear we are on page 1 so its not a ranking fluctuation issue - its something else.
Did you manage to figure out what it was? It would be really helpful for us.
Thanks,
Faraz

I'm seeing some strange things with your home-page, even looking at your indexed pages (i.e. with the site: operator). The home-page seems to be devalued across a lot of terms (although not outright blocked or penalized).
Two possibilities:
(1) Your content is running up against some kind of adult content filter. I don't have much experience with that, but I suspect it's not the whole story here. Other content is ranking and I can get the home-page to rank on long-tail terms. Usually, Safe Search is all-or-none.
(2) You could be on the borderline of a targeted penalty -- either relating to that page or specific links and anchor text targeting that page. I'm not seeing clear evidence of that, though. You've got a chunk of links from directories, which aren't particularly high value, and that's about all I'm seeing. It may just be that the links you have aren't enough or seem to be low value, and Google's evaluation of that keeps bouncing around.
Minor thing to try, just in case you're on the border of some kind of spam threshold. Maybe tone down the double mention of "Sex Toy Party(ies)" in your Title Tag. It could be looking funny to spam and adult filters. Start with the brand name and something like "April Nites - Sex Toy Parties for Women". I'd drop "Adult", too -- I get your intent, but it just emphasizes the adult content nature more, and your home-page itself isn't problematic (I'd call it PG-13, honestly).
I'm seeing a little (minor) technical weirdness. You've got both "www" and non-www versions of pages indexed, along with a handful of sub-domains. Looks like your CMS may be creating some odd URLs, too. Not seeing anything excessive (i.e. thousands of URLs), but give that your site is small and has a relatively weak link profile, these things can add up.
Actually, you've got some really weird blog URLs indexed, like this:
http://www.aprilnites.com.au/blog/files/bb3a7ed4b561c6e8e2af28fb717a2edc-0.html...along with a bunch of tags/categories. These odd pages are overwhelming actual, unique content. Try this command in Google to see more:
[https://www.google.com.au/search?q=aprilnites.com.au+inurl%3Ablog&gl=au]Google is filtering out a ton of stuff, it seems. This doesn't directly explain the home-page problem but, again, it's weakening your other pages, potentially. Not sure what CMS you're running, but I haven't seen those odd URLs.

Hello, thanks for your reply. There doesn't seem to be any movement in our competitors rankings. The video was Vimeo. We took it down about 12 hours ago and still no change so it doesn't look like it's that. It's so stressful knowing there is a problem but not how to fix it. Really appreciate your help.

It's really hard to pinpoint the exact reason your jumping in SERPs. Anything you do to your website, adding new content or building a new link, will cause you to jump around. Your process of elimination was good, the video may or may not have had an impact on your ranks. I think it depends on what video platform you used. I'm sure you know Google owns YouTube, if the video was not already on YouTube I would add it to your channel and embed it back on your homepage.
Are you tracking your competitors? If they're jumping around too then it's nothing you did. Also, you may have new competitors going after your keywords recently which may be causing your website to ride the Google roller-coaster. I wouldn't suggest repeatedly pinging GSC to index your website... let it do it naturally. It could raise a flag if your submitting your sitemaps everyday for manual indexing.

301 vs Canonical - With A Side of Partial URL Rewrite and Google URL Parameters-OH MY
Hi Everyone, I am in the middle of an SEO contract with a site that is partially HTML pages and the rest are PHP and part of an ecommerce system for digital delivery of college classes. I am working with a web developer that has worked with this site for many years. In the php pages, there are also 6 different parameters that are currently filtered by Google URL parameters in the old Google Search Console. When I came on board, part of the site was https and the remainder was not. Our first project was to move completely to https and it went well. 301 redirects were already in place from a few legacy sites they owned so the developer expanded the 301 redirects to move everything to https. Among those legacy sites is an old site that we don't want visible, but it is extensively linked to the new site and some of our top keywords are branded keywords that originated with that site. Developer says old site can go away, but people searching for it are still prevalent in search. Biggest part of this project is now to rewrite the dynamic urls of the product pages and the entry pages to the class pages. We attempted to use 301 redirects to redirect to the new url and prevent the draining of link juice. In the end, according to the developer, it just isn't going to be possible without losing all the existing link juice. So its lose all the link juice at once (a scary thought) or try canonicals. I am told canonicals would work - and we can switch to that. My questions are the following: 1. Does anyone know of a way that might make the 301's work with the URL rewrite? 2. With canonicals and Google parameters, are we safe to delete the parameters after we have ensures everything has a canonical url (parameter pages included)? 3. If we continue forward with 301's and lose all the existing links, since this only half of the pages in the site (if you don't count the parameter pages) and there are only a few links per page if that, how much of an impact would it have on the site and how can I avoid that impact? 4. Canonicals seem to be recommended heavily these days, would the canonical urls be a better way to go than sticking with 301's. Thank you all in advance for helping! I sincerely appreciate any insight you might have. Sue (aka Trudy)

Will this affect
Hi there! I've got a question that I'm having trouble answering. My client has one site url essentially has two sites within it. The homepage (name-photography.com) content focuses on her fashion photography services with a specific design and look with almost no mention of weddings unless you click the weddings icon. When you click on weddings, it takes you to a "new" site on the same url (name-photography.com/weddings) that has entirely different look and feel. The client would like to improve her visibility for her wedding services and not the fashion photography side. Would it be more beneficial to house the wedding services on an entirely new URL so that homepage content can be wedding focused. Again, with the current homepage, it's all fashion photography focused and not easy to redo. Or could one implement a 301 redirect from the fashion homepage (name-photographer.com) to the wedding homepage (name-photographer.com/weddings)? Thanks for your advice! Jessica

How To Organise my URLS - Which is Optimal?
Hi all, I am currently in the process of re-writing my companies website URL structure. Compared to the way the website is structured at the minute, there's going to be a lot more URL's as the previous structure has missed out on a lot of search avenues that i intend to include within the rebuild. one of my issues is basically deciding under which category certain URL's come under, I can think of reasons for both sides but can't quite decide on which is optimal. My company is an automotive/car dealer so we sell cars for certain manufactures as well as offering a number of other services. what I'm curious about is what makes more sense in terms of the category that comes first in the URL. Here's what I am torn between; /(car manufacturer)/servicing OR /servicing/(car-manufacturer) To give you some more info that might influence the decision; In terms of generic keyword targeting, the majority would search in the order of '(car manufacturer) service' as opposed to 'service for (car manufacturer)'. Currently on our site, the sections /(manufacturer) are some of the most authoritative pages that we have on the website, but we've done very little work on /service in the past. For me, this would suggest that naturally the pages flowing from that URL would get an advantage in terms of authority/ranking. With either URL structure, the URL's are eventually going to cross paths - I just need to decide which one is best and should therefore feature first. Hopefully this is somewhat clear. I'd appreciate any suggestions or if you don't quite understand what I'm asking for then general URL advice is also appreciated. Many thanks Sam

HTTPS sitewide move has resulted in huge rankings drop...
Hi all, An e-commerce site has recently moved protocol to https sitewide. The site ranked page one for some great terms and now appear to be page 2 or below. Brand terms seem unphased and are still very strong, on both Google and Bing. The following has been done; Everything 301'd from http to https Sitemap Edited Updated Webmaster Tools Robots.txt edited Crawled and Fetched all pages daily. Checked Paged are all follow, index. PPC Ads mass updated to new url's. Most terms were ranked 1 - 9 on Bing, and Page 1/2 on Google. HTTPS upgrade was done less than one week ago. The site is not payday loan related, nor was it hit by latest panda escapades. Everything on the site is relevant to the content. Has anybody else been in this position, what else can be done? I'd appreciate any help and advice. Thank You K9gB7hz

Something is killing my rankings
Hello, I'm in the process of re-doing the following two domains: www.musillawfirm.com and www.melbourneduilawfirm.com because something absolutely plummeted my rankings. Any specific thoughts on why the sited could have gone from top 10 to being virtually deleted? Thank you in advance.

How important is it to canonicalize mobile URLs to desktop URLs?
I know many SEO's prefer a stylesheet and single URL, but if you use m.domain.com, do you canonicalize to your desktop URLS?

Expiring URL seo
a buddy of mine is running a niche job board and is having issues with expiring URLs. we ruled it out cuz a 301 is meant to be used when the content has moved to another page, or the page was replaced. We were thinking that we'd be just stacking duplicate content on old urls that would never be 'replaced'. Rather they have been removed and will never come back. So 410 is appropriate but maybe we overlooked something. any ideas?
