Homepage with and without language subfolder
-
Hi all,
We are checking to optimize a website that has four language versions in subfolders.
When setting the self referencing canonicals and the hreflang tags, we came across a particular problem. Both the URL's example.com and example.com/nl are being indexed and have the same content in the same language.
For the other language versions, it is quite straightforward, but what to do with these two URL's? Currently, there is a canonical tag from example.com to example.com/nl. Is a simple 301 redirect to the URL with the language subfolder the best solution?
Something to consider: if a backlink points to example.com (without specifying the language subfolder), all the link juice will go to the /nl version and not to other versions (with a canonical as well as with a 301 of course).
Thanks!

It is the "normal" way to do it, often times pages are looking for region or browser language and redirect, but thats not the question here.
Yes you may need to take care about some links you have control about in any way (yelp, linkedin, socials - whatever it is). But I bet you link to all languages. Your Homepage for example links to the other language-versions of the homepage. So the "juice" you thought is going to one language, would be sent to the other languages in smaller portions. How it should be, so no Problemo..

Homepage Ranking For Service Keyword (KW Cannibalisation)
Hi All! I will try and keep my question brief, any advice is greatly appreciated. I have a client that is a well establish coach hire company, naturally their main priority is to be ranking for 'coach hire' in their surrounding area. The homepage and /coach-hire/ page - both appear to compete against each other in the search results. The homepage is positioned higher up the rankings, it also has historical backlinks with anchor text relating to coach hire, whereas the /coach-hire/ page doesn't have all that many backlinks. The company has a few services that it offers through it's website - Coach Hire, Coach Day Trips & School Bus Services. The Day Trips and Bus Services pages rank well for their respective keyword. My question therefore, is - should I focus on making the homepage the best page for the 'coach hire' term and forget about trying to get the /coach-hire/ page to outrank the homepage? If so, what's the best way of doing this in terms of what happens to the /coach-hire/ page? Any advice is greatly appreciate and if you need any other info, just let me know. Many thanks, Gareth

Wrong target content in the SERP regarding language
Hi Guys! I'm currently under an SEO issue and need some advices about it. My problem is that, Google doesn't show the good pages in the SERPs regarding the languages. In fact, I translated some content in Italian, German, French etc ... When someone use the branding name of the project to find it by google, if this guy is French, German, or something else, Google shows the English version in the results. I of course would like google showing the German version for a German guy in the SERP ... I already made properly my hreflang tags. Some tips to fix it? Thanks a lot in advance! And hope everybody had a merry christmas!

Ranking without use of keywords on page & without use of matching anchor text??
Howdy folks. So, here is a dilemma. One of competitors of ours is somehow ranking for a keyphrase "houston chronicle obituaries" without any usage of these keywords on the page, without any full or partial anchor text match ("chronicle" is not used anywhere). The rest of competitiors' rankings make sense. Any ideas?

Client would like to 301 redirect the homepage to a category page
Hello MOZ Community!!! I would like your expert opinions on a scenario, please! My client is an ecommerce company, and currently has one of its category pages outranking its homepage for a few key phrases. The homepage, however, has a better conversion rate. So, the client is asking that we make the homepage the category URL, so http://www.theirsite.com/blue-clothes. The existing homepage URL - http://www.theirsite.com - would 301 REDIRECT to the category page - which would render the current version of the homepage. Therefore, there would be nothing, ZERO content, on the MAIN URL: http://www.theirsite.com Has anyone ever done this before? What are the pros and the cons of this practice? Here is my same client, for reference: https://mza.bundledseo.com/community/q/issue-with-category-ranking-on-page-1-vs-homepage-ranking-on-page-2

Site appears with ".com" but not without it
Hi, When I search for my site www.docslinc.com as "docslinc.com" the results on the SERPS have the home page and the site map but not the other indexed pages. The other issue occurs when I search for the company name alone "docslinc", the homepage does not show up at all, and some of the other pages show up. I have looked all over the place and cannot find an answer. I have checked the onsite optimization and it all seems to be correct. Any suggestions would be amazing. Thanks, zulumanf

Including FAQ as Invividual Blog Posts Without Duplicate Issues
My website's FAQ section has a lot of detailed answers, of which I want to upload most on an individual basis to my blog. Example: I may have 30 FAQ and I want to upload 28 of these FAQ as individual blog posts, as it could be good additional search traffic. Question: how do I deal with duplicate content issues? Do I Include canonical? The FAQ are all on the same URL - not separate URL's - which means each blog post would only represent a small % of the entire FAQ section, though each blog would be a 100% copy of an FAQ.

Avoiding 301 on purpose; Landing homepage linking to another domain with "Click here to go" and 5 sec meta refresh
Hello, Some users when they search for our site by using "ourbrand" keyword that ignore the first result (we will call it here ourbrand.de -not real name-) and they look for ourbrand.com . Even though we have that domain name also registered (indeed it also has a high ranking power) we are doing a 301 from the dot com to the dot.de . What we want to do is to index the homepage of the dot com, that is http://www.ourband.com as a secondary result while doing a 301 to any other internal URL of the dot com to the dot .de. Yes, we will loose link juice for the main domain but at least we will not loose visits from the brand traffic (which is our main traffic). So the question is, would Google index ourbrand.com if we show just a landing page that just show our logo, a "Click here to go to ourbrand.de" with a link to http://www.ourbrand.de and a meta refresh of 6 seconds to that URL? Additionally a cookie would be sent to the first time visitors, so in the next time they would be automatically redirected. PS: The 6 seconds is to avoid search engine consider it a "301" like it do with short meta refresh (not sure what time is the minimum to avoid be considered a 301). Any other suggestions on how to deal with this problem are welcomed

Could Temporarily Linking New Directory Pages to my Homepage Help SEO?
Within my website we maintain a nationwide directory of auto repair shops. When we add or significantly update / modify a particular listing, would it help improve the individual search engine rankings, Google PageRank, and / or Page Authority of the new auto shop page if we linked these pages to an area on the home page for "Our Newest Featured Shops" or "Latest Member Additions" or something of the nature? Each new shop profile would then be linked directly from the homepage for a period of time. I assume that it might be crawled and added to the indexes quicker, but would there be other benefits? If so, would those benefits only be temporary if eventually the new shop no longer linked to the homepage? Would keeping all featured shops in rotational display on the homepage make any difference? Any input is appreciated. Thanks. Kelly Vaught
