Dropped rankings due to too many links, help needed
-
We have just re-designed our site and added a big drop-down navigation menu to help users get straight to the category/sub-category they are looking for, take a look at http://www.discountfiresupplies.co.uk to see what I mean. Since doing so our rankings have dropped which we've been told may be because there are now so many links on (particularly) the home page diluting the rankings of that page. We've been advised that if we hide the drop-down menus using "style='display: none'" until they are required that the search engines will ignore them which we have now done but is this correct or will they still be indexed? And if so do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks, Tariq

First of all, I like your new design, and typically, large sub-navs are excellent for usability and spidering. As Michael Martinez from seo-theory.com once eloquently put it: "[PageRank] was made to be wasted. Real SEOs understand that."
If you think of your homepage as a balloon and PageRank helium, then trying to capture as much PR as possible to increase rank seems logical. Unfortunately, that's not a correct analogy. If you've just re-designed your site, it's likely that there are new problems created you're unaware of. Or, also likely is that - depending on how new your site is - Google's system hasn't finished fully evaluating it. It's normal for a redesigned website to see some rank fluctuations over the course of several days (or even a week or two) while it is in various stages of being indexed in ranked.
Do not use ""style='display: none'" to hide links. This is cloaking in its most basic and easily detectable form, and whether you mean well or not, Google can't detect your intentions - so don't expect them to.
TL;DR I would recommend you re-evaluate the rest of your site first, your competitors, and link situation before worrying about too many links on your main nav bar as it's usually not the issue.

To use nofollow for pr sculpting is not anymore a valid tactic. As explained quite a long time ago (2009?) nofollow links are counted for the link equity distribution, with the only exception that the pr evaporates as it is not "assigned" to the page the no followed link refers to.

You also need long tail and branded links. Don't stop building links to justify the change. You should see a change back in the SERPs in about 3 weeks. I did the same thing.

You could just nofollow the links you don't want to lead to nonindexed sites. This way Google will stop there. Other than that editing your robots.txt to exclude what you don't want to show up would work.

How many pages should we optimise?
I have more than 250 pages on my site including my products. Is it a good idea to optimise each page with a unique keyword or is there a limit to the number of pages we should aim for?

General drop in rankings
We've made a LOT of improvements to our on page SEO and we've been on the right track, but since about 26/7 our rankings appears to have gone down. Since early 2015 we've reworked a lot of the copy on our site to improve the unique/duplicate ratio, we've redone a lot of urls that didn't make any sense. We've improved image alt-text and file names. We've reduced image size on most of the site and we have disavowed spam links (obvious ones like nike shoes and oakley glasses). We've basically improved on-site SEO as much as we can with headers and whatnot. We've been hacked 4 times since January and we had two partial manual penalties from Google, but they were quickly dealt with and we've switched server to one that is both safer and a lot faster. Most of the hacked content seems to have disappeared from Googles index but not all of it. We have also tried our best to deal with URL parameters and we've made 301's out of hundreds of URLs with duplicate content from old slideshows that basically only had an image. And there's even more things we've done like working a lot more with social media, but despite all that were loosing ranking every week and our SEOlytics SVR is at its lowest since early 2014. And we've never (afaik) bought links or anything like that. Obviously we're doing something wrong but frankly we're running out of ideas. We've lost rankings on individual important phrases but there's site-wide general drop.

Link in H1 tag?
Hi guys, We're working through a redesign of our product page and are considering the following: http://screencast.com/t/NBSsDGA9vgS3 Currently the product name (including the brand name - Arc'teryx) in this case is included in the H1 and none of the title is linked. You can see this here: http://www.evo.com/synthetic-jackets/arcteryx-atom-lt-hoodie-womens.aspx The firm we're working with is proposing keeping the entire title in the H1 but linking the brand name to the entire brand assortment. My concern is that the brand name is a critical part of the product title and should be text (not a link). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Too many onpage links
We got the weekly seomoz reports and see that most of our pages and posts contain too many onpage links. I checked our website and all of our pages have a header, footer and left side menu. I did the math and there are 13 links in the header, 26 links in the footer and 76 links in the left side menu. This means that all of our post and pages have 115 links at the start. So what do I do? Do I remove the left side menu from the posts' layout and use only the footer and header? Or do I add nofollow links? Thanks!

Will a new domain name help rankings
If I purchase a domain name that links to my site with the new domain name being keyword specific....will that help boost rankings in Google? Reason I ask is that a particular website always ranks higher than ours because of their domain name (keyword specific). They are currently not even "open" and they still manage to rank high. I checked for links with the seomoz tools but did not see any high links etc.. Thanks!

Internal link to the home page
When building menus and other internal links, should the link to the home page be http://www.domain.com/ or http://www.domain.com/index.html or does it matter? Best,
