Title tag same text as H1?

What is the group's opinion on whether or not the <title>tag should have the exact same text as the <h1> tag on the same page? Obviously both should contain the phrase that page is optimized for but is it better to have them be variants of each other, or both the same and maybe equal to the key phrase that page is optimized for? Both approaches have merit. I recall a Matt Cutts video where he shared an experience from his blog where he intentionally varied the title tag from his header tag. I even recall the subject was a firefox printing issue, but I can't find the video at the moment. It wasn't the normal 2-3 minute videos but instead was a 30-60 minute video.
The benefit of aligning your title and header tags would be more focus on your core keyword or phrase. If you had an extremely competitive keyword then I would consider keeping a match. An example would be a "Car Insurance". All of the strength of both your title and header would be 100% focused on the single phrase.
Another valid approach is to add some variation to allow you to rank better for additional search terms. If your title was "PC Software" your header could be "Computer Software". Closer to your example would be "Los Angeles Blue Widgets" and "LA Blue Widgets". Again, Los Angels and LA may be viewed the same so perhaps "Southern California Blue Widgets" would be a better variation.
There is definite research and testing necessary. Some keywords variations are treated the same by Google and PC / Computer may be one of them. I would recommend try a setting for 30 days, measure the results, then try a variation the next month.

Second is write for users. Here at SEOmoz our title tag is the same as the title of our post on our blog because we think it is important to meet users' expectations. When they see a title tag in the SERP and they click through to your page, you want them to feel like they've arrived where they thought they were going to arrive. So, it doesn't always have to match the title of your post, but something similar, something to make them comfortable, and something to talk to the users.

it's certainly acceptable for them to be the same. That said, the Title tag is used as your search display in the SERPS and "los angeles blue widgets" may not attract click throughs and that will impact your ratings. Long title problem
I'm getting an incredible number of 4xx errors and long titles from a small website (northstarpad.com); over 13k 4xx errors and almost 20k "title element is too long". The number keeps climbing, but the site shouldn't have more than a couple hundred pages. When I look at the 4xx errors they are clearly being generated by some program since they have multiple and repeating keywords. Here's an example: | http://northstarpad.com/category/wedding-photographer-farmington-michigan/pet-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/ | I looked at the ftp files and plugins and couldn't see anything that could cause it, but I'm a beginner so no surprise there. Any suggestions where to look or how to fix this?

Duplicate title tags being caused by upper case and lower case version of urls'
Hi GWT is reporting lots of duplicate titles for a clients new site. Mainly these are due to 2x different versions of the url, one with words starting with an upper case character and the other all lower case. Clients dev saying this has something to do with windows server and is ok! Is this correct or should i be telling them to delete and then 301 redirect all upper case versions to the lower case (since lower case better practice) and that will deal with the reported dupe titles ? Anchor text analysis
Hello! I'm doing a systematic review of my site after getting a bit of a heavy punishment from google last month. I think things are going in the right direction, but wanted some advice on anchor text. Footer Links with same anchor text on all pages
We have different websites targeted at the different services our company provides. (e.g. For our document storage services, we have www.ukdocumentstorage.com. For document management, we have www.document-management-solutions.co.uk). If we take the storage site for example, every single page has a link in the footer to our document management site, with the anchor text 'Cleardata Document Management' SEOMoz is telling me that these are seen as external links (as they are on a different URL's), and I'm just clarifying that would this be a major possible factor in the website not ranking highly? How should I rectify this issue?

Block /tag/ or not?
I've asked this question in another area but now i want to ask it as a bigger question. Do we block /tag/ with robots.txt or not. Here's why I ask: My wordpress site does not block /tag/ and I have many /tag/ results in the top 10 results of Google. Have for months. The question is, does Google see /tag/ on WordPress as duplicate content? SEOMoz says it's duplicate content but it's a tag. It's not really content per say. I'm all for optimizing my site but Google is not penalizing me for /tag/ results. I don't want to block /tag/ if Google is not seeing it as duplicate content for only one reason and that's because I have many results in the top 10 on G. So, can someone who knows more about this weigh in on the subject for I really would like a accurate answer. Thanks in advance...

Should I use a "-", ":", or "|" in the title tag?
Out of habit, I've always put a "-" or dash to separate items in the title tag. However, I've noticed that more and more sites are using either a ":" or "|" in the title. Is there one that is better to use than the other?
