Today we mourn the loss of our dear friend, long-time community member, and constant shining star in the industry, Dana Lookadoo. We all have a story about Dana. I'd love to hear yours.

Please help long-time community member and mentor, Dana Lookadoo, by supporting her medical fund to pay for caregiver costs. She's given so much to all of us over the years, now it's our turn to return the favor.

At this very moment a spam comment is being written on the Moz blog, a tweet is being sent to @Moz, and someone is signing up for the next Mozinar. Today, meet the peeps behind the *beep*s from Roger, and join me in acknowledging our team of community managers for #CMAD.

Title tags are created for robots and spiders, so why are we copying/pasting them into OG tags for human consumption? In today's Whiteboard Friday, Jen Lopez shows us why should all avoid that sort of lazy tactic.

Today, I'm super-excited to introduce our latest product from Moz, MozWorthy! It's a tool that takes your regular (perhaps even boring) video, adds some "oomph" and pizzazz, and makes it go viral.

Let's be real here, measuring your social efforts is a pain in the butt. It's simple to track followers and see which platforms send you traffic, but how do you know that you're meeting your goals?

We talk a lot about SEO and Community, but usually they're not done in the same sentence. Jen walks you through ways to mix the two together to be as tasty as peanut butter and jelly.

At SEOmoz, we've come to realize that growing and nurturing our community isn't just great for business, but it's great for our members and the greater marketing community as a whole. In today's Whiteboard Friday, our very own Community Director, Jen Lopez, shares her tips on delighting your community members and paving the road for lifelong fans of your business.

Last week, approximately 800 marketers from across the globe converged in Seattle for our annual conference, MozCon. The entire Moz staff attended as well, and we were all quite excited to have such a diverse set of attendees and speakers. For many of us, it was an experience we won't soon forget. Between the amazing speakers and brilliant content, to networking with the community, and even singing karaoke at the Garage, it was a magical three days.

Hello again friends! It's been a while since our last MozCation conversation. I'm sure you thought we'd forgotten about it, but not to worry, it's time again for another round of MozCation meetups!

Remember a time when “community” meant the neighborhood or town you lived in? Or when a business only had to be concerned with making customers happy when they were inside their store? It’s sometimes hard to remember what life was like before online communities became such commonplace. But the fact of the matter is that online communities are where we spend most of our time ...

The day Google+ opened up brand pages, I anxiously refreshed my Gmail inbox all day long until I finally got the email inviting me to create a company page. I knew that by creating the page under my personal account that I’d be the only one able to manage it for the near future. But I really didn’t care; I was just so giddy to get the page set up.
Remember that feeling? I...

Hey party people! We are really excited to announce that the Mozzers are headed to Philadelphia. That's right! On May 10th we're having a meetup at the infamous SEER Search Church. You'll get a chance to see both Rand Fishkin and Wil Reynolds speak (for free even) and network with other l...

Conferences are always a great way to get out and meet the SEOmoz community. Luckily we have SMX West coming up next week and quite a few Mozzers will be attending, speaking, live blogging and tweeting. We want to get a chance to meet as many of you as possible so I forced everyone to decide on a schedule so you’ll know where to find us!

When was the last time you were asked, “So what’s our average growth rate on Facebook?” Err... Whether it’s a client, a boss, or the CEO of the company, you get questions like this. Ok so perhaps you’ve never heard this exact question, but I can pretty much bet that you’ve heard something similar. They want to know how your social media efforts are...

About a year ago, we started talking about how we wanted to find a way to meet more people from the community in person. Sure we all get to know each other online through the blog, on Twitter or maybe in Q&A, but it's nothing like getting to meet people face-to-face. There becomes a bond or friendship once you actually know each other that helps to build a community. ...

Imagine this if you will… you're sitting in your office in Denver, working away and see a tweet come through your stream about an SEOmoz meetup in New York City. These days it seems like every time we turn around someone is telling us how to manage our Twitter account(s). Whether they're talking about managing a business, a community or even a personal account, I sort of feel like I'm always being told what to do. Sadly, as my mother knows very well, I usually don't take well to being told what to do. This is especially true when it comes to social medi...

Every now and then it's important to take a good look at your community, see where you stand, remember where you've been and take a look at where you're going. Today I wanted to take the time to do just that. Over the next month-ish we have a number of changes and additions happening to the SEOmoz Community that I wanted to let everyone know about. I also thought it would be fun to take a look at our community from a numbers perspective.

This post gives those marketers who focus more on Social Media and less on SEO a checklist of ways to optimize for search before (and after) promoting content on the social sites.

Earlier this month we gave you the top SEOmoz posts from 2010 based on the total number of thumbs up, traffic, backlinks and tweets. But that wasn't enough, and the community asked for more! You wanted to see the posts with the most comments and the comments with the most thumbs up (as I screwed that list up in the last post). So I decided to even take it one step further and see which community members commented the most in 2010 also.

Over the past few months our dev and product teams have been busy little bees working on some pretty exciting new enhancements and upgrades to the web app. Since it's the holiday season... we might even liken them to Santa's little elves building toys for all the good little SEOs around the world.[photo]We've been rolling out quite a few updates each week. Some you've probably not...

Over here at the mozPlex we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of our “Best Posts” of 2010. But how do we determine what a best post is? Do we look at the number of thumbs up… or do we care more about traffic generated by the post? Or since we’re SEOs ...

Last week I covered SES San Francisco for SEOmoz. Every time I attend a conference, I try to attend sessions that will have information I can bring back to the community. Sometimes I look for sessions that aim to answer questions we see a lot in Q & A or that I notice popping up in comments on the blog. Either way, my focus is usually to find information that will be helpful to the communit...

This week I pretty much have two things on my mind: beta launch and conferences. Since Rand will be covering the beta launch later today (wheeeeee) I thought I'd focus on the conferences. Along with preparing for our own PRO Seminar later this month, we've been discussing the various conferences we'll be attending and speaking at over the next few months. Personally I'm getting excited for SES San Francisco next week.

Yabba Dabba Doooo! Ok, I have no idea what the Flintstones has to do with SEO training, but the point is... I'm excited. It's that time of year again when we open up registration for the PRO Training Series: Tips, Tricks and Tactics. See! Now do you get why I'm so giddy? As you may have heard, SEOmoz has moved offices (woo hoo!). So we thought it would be nice to take you on a tour of our new digs. We're quite proud that we outgrew the old space and needed a bigger place. Pleas follow along as I take you on a tour of the new office.

Last week, a few of us from SEOmoz attended WebShare’s Seminar for Success for Google Analytics and Google Website Optimizer training. All of us who attended have a decent grasp on GA but really wanted to get some advanced information and gain a better understanding of GA’s potential. Plus, actually getting trained on something is always helpful, even if you feel you know it well!...

Who is the one person (or group of people) that you can't live without? Your developer. [Don't tell that to your spouse though.. eh?] As an SEO your life revolves around making changes to your site/application and getting all the pieces to fall into place. If you live in a perfect world, you have the ability to change all your on-page optimization including URL, Title tag, meta description, set up redirects, etc. But how many of us live in this fantasy la la land where everything is perfect? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say not very many of us.

Whew! The Spring conference season is in full swing, and the mozzers are coming soon to a city near you. You'll find us anywhere from Charlotte, NC to Barcelona to Singapore in the next couple months. The coolest part is that we're attending and speaking at some conferences for the very first time. It feels good to get out and stretch a bit! Plus, the developer in us will be attending conferenc...

SMX West 2010 kicked off with quite a bang (or was that a yell?). Since Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer was the keynote, people arrived early to ensure good seats. The music playing before it started was amazing, it helped to create an excitement in the room that I really had never felt before a keynote before. I had attempted to save a seat for someone up front, but there was just too much demand and had to give it up. That's the sort of thing that happens at a great concert, not a conference keynote.

The holidays are long over, 2010 is well underway, we've launched a new product, made a big announcement... and it's barely February! While our amazing development and product teams are busily building new tools as I type (and I'm not even kidding, those guys work a lot), some of us are hitting the road. PubCon does an amazing job of putting together a schedule that covers a multitude of tracks and topics. Unfortunately because of this I often end up with a case of "session envy." This post really doesn't need much of an introduction, so I'll get right down to it. Pubcon is coming! Pubcon is cooommiiinnnnggggg! It seems like the whole industry might just shut down for a week while we take over Las Vegas (I hope they're ready for us). This would probably be a great time for spammers to come in and take over our SERPs since we'll be busy in sessions, going to parties, meeting...

We're getting close to the end of the year, which means halloween, holiday parties and spending time with the family... That is unless you're a mozzer! Check out where we'll be over the next few months and hopefully we'll see you there!

We receive many questions every day in our Q & A section. Every question is answered by a different person and is handled personally. Often times we will run across a specific question being asked various times. Although the question is usually never exactly the same, the answer is often fairly similar. One question that has been popping up lately is whether it is really worth it, from an SEO ...

This past week at SES San Jose 2009 gave me the most mixed emotions of any conference I've attended yet. There were parts I loved and parts I was disappointed in. Add that with trying to complete regular work plus cover the conference for SEOmoz, believe me it was a bit crazy.
8/13/2009
Every search conference is usually filled with sessions, keynotes, site reviews, clinics, etc. If you're not at the conference you can usually follow the blogs and Twitter to get your daily dose of conference fare. These help keep you up-to-date on the sessions and general goings on.
8/13/2009
The second day of SES San Jose is wrapping up, so it must be time for the Twitter roundup! There were a number of debates, someone was found sleeping in the first row drooling and another person claimed that most people at the session were probably already following him on Twitter.
8/12/2009
This week I'm at SES San Jose covering the conference for SEOmoz. I'm a one woman show so I'm putting my multi-tasking skills to the test! Obviously I can't make it to every session, or cover every track. Plus there are many others live blogging the event. So, how can I make sure the SEOmoz community gains as much information as possible from this conference? Reuse other people's content, that's h...

Over the past few weeks we’ve been having some great conversations about how SEOs and developers view each other, how they can work together, and why they shouldn’t try to kill each other. Heh. The conclusion that we should all know at least a little about each other’s jobs and that working together (rather than against each other) is beneficial to everyone is fairly obvious. ...

When was the last time you had a heated discussion with your developer? Or better yet, when was the last time they rolled their eyes at you when you asked them to make some sort of change to the website? My guess is that it probably hasn't been all that long. Or has it? A higher probability is actually that you work with some wicked smart developers who blow your mind away with their sheer awesomeness!
7/9/2009
Every now and then great conversations happen via Twitter -- by conversations I mean when multiple people Tweet and "@" each other regarding the same topic. During the day when so many people are online, there is a lot of "noise" which can make it pretty difficult to keep up. However, if you've ever had the joy of being a part of one of the #nightcrew search marketing Twitter conversations, then you know some of the gems I'm talking about. This is actually a great way to get to know other people from the community!

Is it just me, or is it getting on hot in here? Well it IS summer time again, and this year there are some interesting (both national and global) summer online marketing conferences happening. Some of the mozzers will be attending and/or speaking and I thought this was a great time to let everyone know where we'll be, and in some cases, where we'd like to be!

Last Friday I attended and spoke at the Jane and Robot Search Developer Summit in San Francisco. The idea of the conference was to cover technical SEO topics and help train developers and others. The 100 attendees (or so) were a mixed bunch; developers, SEOs, managers and the like.

URL rewrites and 301 redirects... you talk about them, you recommend them, but do you truly understand how they work? Sure, you know that rewriting a URL means that the URL displayed in the browser changes to be more SEO (and user) friendly. And you know that a 301 redirect is a permanent redirect. But let's dig a little deeper, and explain how they work together.

Last week, Google started showing Google profiles at the bottom of U.S. search results. This caused quite a stir among the search marketing industry and a flurry of blog posts have been written about it. As with any topic there are varying opinions on the profiles. Some feel that it is a great way to brand yourself, ...
