For multi language sites, what is best - two domains or one with both languages?
-
We are assisting a client in setting up English and Spanish sites in Texas. They want to be able to find customers who are Spanish speaking predominantly or totally along with the customers they now get who are English speakers.
We are building them a new site and I have researched to find answers all over the board or less than clear. Should the structure be such that we have one site with a set of English and Spanish pages all with Spanish links to Spanish pages and English links to English pages.
Should we instead just have an English site for those people who utilize English and a different site for those who utilize Spanish?
Thanks

Thanks for responding Jason (your pic looks like it was taken in a rain forest).
As to traffic in Spanish for our clients product/service there is enough to put up Spanish language. As I said in reply to Ryan, I am going to have one site for the main with both English and Spanish. I would ask this: you said if considerable Spanish searches you would do one English and one Spanish, why? (Just interested in the reasoning on any SEO) Frankly, I think you could be right as much as I think doing one with both languages could be right.

I think on the whole this is a good answer and is what I was about 90% prepared to do. On the dialects it is a bit less tricky than the Castilian versus Mexican or American Spanish. The population in San Diego, Texas, etc. is going to be predominantly South American and all use essentially the same dialect. But, your advice is good advice for anyone not familiar with the language differences.
Thanks for the help, as always,
-
Thanks for the clarification Robert.
I live in California and I believe the San Diego area is similar to your client's area in that it is close to the Mexican border and is home to a large Spanish population.
Translated content is considered unique. If you have an English and Spanish version of the same article, it is not duplicate content. Therefore I would recommend keeping all your content on one site.
Use the proper meta language tag on each page. There are many dialects of Spanish, and I know for certain a Mexican Spanish speaker can have a lot of difficulty understanding someone from Spain. If you use a translator, don't simply locate someone who speaks Spanish. I would suggest finding someone from Mexico who understands English very well to write the Spanish pages.

Thanks Ryan, I think I was less than clear. The sites target the South Texas region of Texas. If unfamiliar with it, there is a large population of non English speaking immigrants and their offspring. Our client wants to specifically target that area and then, potentially, follow later and target other areas with larger Spanish speaking populations within the US. Since my Spanish is "mas o menos" and I came to Texas as a kid, I am familiar with the cultural differences and the linguistic differences (depending on country of origin for Spanish speakers) and that is a very good observation on your part.
There is enough of a Spanish only population in Texas that many companies advertise in both languages so the client is wanting to insure they are penetrating that market. Hope the additional info helps.

Is the spanish search traffic in Texas enough to make another site worth it? Or are most hispanics using english search terms anyway?
I'd say if the spanish search traffic isn't that much I would make one site that is spanish and english. But if there are considerable spanish searches in your area I would do a separate site in spanish.
Since this is probably a local business, you might confuse the local listings if you try to have two sites for one company. So having two sites could require setting up two companies.
If this was for two different countries, I would definitely make two sites. Since it's in the same geographical area I would lean towards one site instead of two.
-
There are supporters of both methods.
The first suggestion I will make is to keep in mind your segments should be country-based, not language based. Your "Spanish" site will be "US-Spanish", "Mexican-Spanish", "Spain-Spanish", etc. There are not only linguistic differences but cultural differences along with monetary systems and units of measurements.
Prior to offering a recommendation I need to ask, are both the English and Spanish sites targeting a specific country such as the US?

Using a Sub Domain as a Main Domain?
Hi, I'm working on a site at the moment and the sub domain is acting as the main domain. This occurred when the site was redesigned and built on a sub domain for testing but it was never moved to the main domain when it went live (a couple of years ago). So little or no pages are live on domain.com but all on sub.domain.com. It's a large company but they have very poor rankings. Would you recommend that they move the sub domain back into the root folder? Does this involve renaming/re-pointing URLs? Thanks Louise

Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?
Hi everyone, i´ll try to explain a situation is happening to me, i´m goint to try to explain the case (im writing the sites without links for explication purposes. Site 1: Adventurerooms Site 2: Adventureroomsmallorca Site 3: Adventureroomsmadrid (the new site) What happen is that at first there was only Adventurerooms and Adventureroomsmallorca, Adventurerooms was for Madrid and linked to the one in Mallorca too, was kind of giving the information for Madrid but in first page split with a link to Mallorca. In a new strategy we create Adventureroomsmadrid for Madrid, and leave Adventurerooms for Spain (with links to Adventureroomsmadrid and Adventureroomsmallorca. We redirect the info for Madrid in Adventurerooms to Adventureroomsmadrid with 301 redirections. We work during this 3 months in Adventureroomsmadrid making content in the blog, and improving (now Adventureroomsmadrid is Moz 15 (perhaps even more), and Adventurerooms is Moz 10. Surprising Adventurerooms is getting better in its search rankings, even when we took away content from it and even without working well. Adventureroomsmadrid is also improving but not as much as Adventurerooms (i know that is a new site, only 3 months), but Adventurerooms gets better results with no content and only DA of 10. I hope i´ve explain the case with my english so the question is: "Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?" Thanks in advance

301 from old site to new one , Should I point to home page or sub category page ?
Hey Seo Experts, I have a small website ranking for few terms like cabinets sale, buy etc . However what i have now decided is to launch a New website with more different products like living room furniture, wardrobes etc . Out of all these categories on new website Cabinets is one of the SubCategory . Now I do not want to have 2 websites . So wanted to 301 from small cabinets website to newly created website. Some of the doubts I have at the moment is ? 1 Should I REDIRECT 301 to sub category (i,e cabinets) which is purely related to Cabinets or Do a Redirect to HOME PAGE . As I also need more Authority to home page as well , as this is relatively new website ? 2 Second question related to this. If you have multiple sub domains does it divide the total authority & TF.Or it is just Ok to have multiple Sub domains if needed ? Any advice appreciated !! Thanks .

E-commerce site, one product multiple categories best practice
Hi there, We have an e-commerce shopping site with over 8000 products and over 100 categories. Some sub categories belong to multiple categories - for example, A Christmas trees can be under "Gardening > Plants > Trees" and under "Gifts > Holidays > Christmas > Trees" The product itself (example: Scandinavian Xmas Tree) can naturally belong to both these categories as well. Naturally these two (or more) categories have different breadcrumbs, different navigation bars, etc. From an SEO point of view, to avoid duplicate content issues, I see the following options: Use the same URL and change the content of the page (breadcrumbs and menus) based on the referral path. Kind of cloaking. Use the same URL and display only one "main" version of breadcrumbs and menus. Possibly add the other "not main" categories as links to the category / product page. Use a different URL based on where we came from and do nothing (will create essentially the same content on different urls except breadcrumbs and menus - there's a possibiliy to change the category text and page title as well) Use a different URL based on where we came from with different menus and breadcrumbs and use rel=canonical that points to the "main" category / product pages This is a very interesting issue and I would love to hear what you guys think as we are finalizing plans for a new website and would like to get the most out of it. Thank you all!

Best-of-the-web content in steep competition, ecommerce site
Hello, I'm helping my client write a long, comprehensive, best-of-the-web piece of content. It's a boring ecommerce niche, but on the informational side the top 10 competitors for the most linked to topic are all big players with huge domain authority. There's not a lot of links in the industry, should I try to top all the big industries through better content (somehow), pictures, illustrations, slideshows with audio, and by being more thorough than these very good competitors? Or should I go for something that's less linked to (maybe 1/5 as much people linking to it) but easier? or both? We're on a short timeline of 3 and 1/2 months until we need traffic and our budget is not huge

Author Tag - How do you get your Author Thumbnail on more then one site?
Ive managed to set up the Rel:Author tag on my wordpress site, and the thumbnail is now showing in Google search results Each article I write on my blog has a link to me Author page, which has on it a link to my Google Plus page. So this works great. However I write articles for another few websites and would like to get my author thumbnail image showing for them articles too. How do I do this? Do I need an Author page on the other sites also? I dont think I'll be able to get an author page on the other sites, is it not possible to somehow link direct from the article to my G+ page? How would guest articles work too? Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys
