Facebook competition: what's the best way to do it

Taking some advice/ideas from this seomoz blog post
I decided to launch a facebook competition were you like/share the product you want to win.
The question is should I be looking for share or likes? From what I have read Share are more valuable than likes, but Likes would be easier to get I think (ie we could get a lot more of them). Here is an example of one of our product pages:
We already have a like, tweet +1 buttons, but not a facebook share, should it be there?
Any feedback or advice would be appreciated

Hi! Hopefully I can shed a little light on whether to go after shares or likes. Both actually correlate well with higher rankings, but this isn't necessarily a direct correlation it could simply mean that good content gets shared AND linked to which in turn helps rankings. Originally "likes" didn't show up in a user's wall or stream only shares did, so at that point they were more valuable because the share would be seen by more people. However FB has changed it so if you "like" something, not only does it show up on your wall/stream but it also allows you to add a comment. So it works very similarly to a share. If you feel that you can get more "likes" then go for it!

FB share are more "powerful" than likes, but is it better to target "likes" as we could get more of them.

Yes most companies do run contests with a "like" but it is almost always done with a app installed on their page

Reading though the guidelines it doesn't actually say you can't use shares, just not "likes, checking in or connecting to an app".
But the more I think about it, i'm sure I have seen big companies using likes to enter contest etc

there are a few apps out there. they will all allow a contest page on your facebook page.

What do you mean third party contest?
I'm sure i've seen people saying if you like us you get entered into a prize draw, can you do that?
What's the best way to encourage shares?
Any advice much appreciated.

The aim of this contest is not too get more likes for our facebook page but to get actual share/likes for our site (or pages on our site), which is is becoming more important googles eyes (or so i have read)
I didn't know it was against facebooks rules since like based contests are so common on facebook, but good to know.
Don't know much about contest app's will look into it.

I think you should read facebook legal page. It says you can't run a contest based on likes or shares. The way to get around this is to run a third party contest app on your facebook page.
Correct me if I am wrong, but if a user shares a facebook contest page they are not made fans. So if you want more fans I would suggest making it a "like" contest.

How to rip benefits of Facebook Group likes and shares?
Hi guys. So, here is the question/task I'm battling for several days: As you know, you can't share as a company page in facebook groups. However, you can on other pages. If I share on other page, and people like my post, I can invite those people to like my page, no problem there. However, if I want to share a post in FB group, I can only share as myself, and whenever people like that post, they like a post of me as a person, therefore I can't invite them to like my page, unless I add them as a friend (which is not the best scenario really). The same question goes towards when someone shares a post. So, what is the best way to get some benefits from people I can't invite to like a page directly? Thanks!

Facebook Page - About/Description/General About/Mission - Questions
Hi, Im just setting up a FB fan page for a client How terrible is it to use clients websites home page descriptive copy as the Facebook page long description ? Language is in Turkish which i don't speak so i'm not able to edit a new version of it just for FB and no budget to hire Turkish speaker to come up with something. So was going to copy & paste but that would be duplicate with HP obviously. How important is it to fill in 'Mission Statement' & 'General About' ? Especially if long description likely to already include that info ? I think long descrip is important for FB pages on seo etc etc but a good one eliminates importance of 'Mission' & 'General About', or is it still advisable to fill these in or are they just extra boxes for flexibility ? I take it when it comes to securing a vanity url (once we hit 25+ fans) for a foreign language version FB page it should ideally be brand name (which includes a keyword) in the local/target language ? The page name is already the brand name in English but since contains keyword is it best to rename into local target language similarly to the url for consistency and local targeting or better to keep one in Turkish and one in English ? Facebook Checkin probs for a local business FB fan page
Hi I have a client who has set up Facebook fan page for their physically located local business and they have 'checkedin' to it but not showing on FB page as having been checked in i.e. '0 were here' when i would have thought it should show at least 1 Does anybody know how best to set up FB fan page for a local business so is checkin'able ? or rather just get the checking in aspect of existing page working properly ? What are different strategies to achieve a strong social presence for clients in multiple industries? How do you best leverage your time?
I just finished watching the mozinar on "The End of Search Without Social" mozinar, and I have so many points that I want to implement for our agency. The problem I see is that we have clients in about 20 different industries. How do you create strong social relationships in each of these industries for your clients? It seems that you could have more influence if you built all into your own personal profiles or your SEO company's to create that great fan base. Anyone have success in doing it across the board? Shared articles in the SERP's - who sees these shares?
Hi Folks, I am trying to find out a little more about how individuals need to be connected to see that someone 'shared' something and for this to then show up in my results when signed into Google. Can anyone shed a little more light on this please? I am just looking for extra clarification. Would we need to be connected through Google Buzz? Facebook? Twitter? Quora? LinkedIn? None of the above? With everyone you are connected to through your Google Account? What is Google using when it looks at how I am connected with others?
