Create a new page or try to improve rankings for homepage
-
I'm working with a client attempting that competes in the highly competitive anti-virus market with a very limited marketing budget. They are currently ranking well for only a few terms - one is "Free Antivirus trial" - currently position 11 on Google.
The top ranking sites have a page SEO'ed for this term. My client's SERP is their homepage, seemingly based primarily on the meta description tag.
For SEO and PPC purposes I would like to create a new page specifically for the "Free Antivirus trial" but I'm afraid of messing with the second page listing that currently exists.
My question for SEO folks is...
Should I create a new, properly SEO'd page or attempt to improve the home page ranking?

You can do this practice by adding some more articles related to your category. Informative content on the article helps a lot ranking. I have tested this technique on my electric bike reviews blog.

Speaking of multiple keywords on the same page....I read your (Stephen's) post at http://unbounce.com/seo/a-5-step-process-for-content-optimization/ and am curious about Google sets. To my understanding its shut down. How will you get similar information in its absence?
Joining the dive forum was brilliant btw.

I agree.
Each page of content (intentionally not using the word "article" because they have lots of photos and possibly video) should be built with the intention of being the best-on-the-web in that niche.
But, if you want to be go-to-guy for mountain bike tires you should be able to pull it off.

For EGOLs advice to work, you would need a very well thought through plan and GREAT content (like a lot of super awesome content)
-
I have lots of pages competing for the same keywords and sometimes hold positions #1, #2, #3 and sometimes even #4.
If you are going for "Mountain Bike Tires"... you could have separate content pages for...
-
product category page
-
how to select them
-
changing a tire in 45 seconds with video of me doing it
-
technical specs
-
inflation methods levels for different types of riding
-
flat prevention
-
I could list more - but one should be the first content that an interested person should read about the topic
If you put all of that content out there you will be everywhere in the MBT SERPs and maybe one or two of these articles (all huge presentations with big photos and possible video) will attract some heavy sharing - enough to move it to good rankings. And, each of these pages that might acquire authority will have straight links into several of your product pages.

How do you avoid duplicate content? Optimize for variations of the keyword in terms of exact, phrase, broad etc.?
-
Not everyone will agree with me here.... but I really like to attack a KW with multiple pages - one of them with deep content. It would not bother me a bit to have my homepage optimized for a term and a second page optimized for that same term.
No worries about two pages for the same KW because that second page might outrank the homepage and if it does not it might be strong enough to rank at #20 and that will give me #11 and #12 in the rankings.
If I was attacking in heavy competition with a second page I would like to have an informative page rather than a product page.... however, since you have something FREE, I would gladly use it... but create content there that makes a great reason sign up for this free trial and SHARE. You want content there that inspires sign ups and telling your friends because this service is so damn good.
If they sign up I would like to have some very occasional email that would contact them with a message that will elicit sharing... and when you have substantive upgrades let them know and again... "tweet to us if it's working for you".... suggest the tweet for them so you get what you want.

Unique Pages with Thin Content vs. One Page with Lots of Content
Is there anyone who can give me a definitive answer on which of the following situations is preferable from an SEO standpoint for the services section of a website? 1. Many unique and targeted service pages with the primary keyword in the URL, Title tag and H1 - but with the tradeoff of having thin content on the page (i.e. 100 words of content or less). 2. One large service page listing all services in the content. Primary keyword for URL, title tag and H1 would be something like "(company name) services" and each service would be in the H2 title. In this case, there is lots of content on the page. Yes, the ideal situation would be to beef up content for each unique pages, but we have found that this isn't always an option based on the amount of time a client has dedicated to a project.

Can't figure why ranking dropped after SEO improved.
I took a website that never had any keyword research performed, meta data filled in or anything strategic regarding getting ranked on the search engines. We rebuilt the website from an old Dreamweaver install using Wordpress, did keyword research, optimized one page per keyword term, filled in all the appropriate meta data and alt tags. The site has dropped in rankings and I've been working for the past 3 months to attempt to raise it up. Can you see what I am doing wrong? (This is the client site: http://www.atozqualityfencing.com).

We have 5 postions on page 2 in a google search, but none on page 1\. How can we fix this?
For one of our most important key phrases we have 5 listings on page 2 but none on page 1. We are an ecommerce company, the key phrase we're trying for is a Top Level Category name for us, so the 5 links we have on googles second page for the key phrase (in order) are the appropriate top level category page, the sites home page and than three sub categories of that top level category. So while that all makes sense, can't we convince google to concentrate all that link power/juice into just the top level category page? Hopefully bumping it to first page rank? The 5 ranks are 11-15

Dealing with a category page that is optimised & ranks for same keyword as homepage
Hi, I'm working with a very niche website where only one product is sold. This means there is a small keyword set (just variations of same keyword) that we are optimising for. Currently the homepage www.example.com ranks in position 2 for target term - "sample". But there is also a required deeper page www.example.com/sample which has lots and lots of internal links targeted to "sample" pointing to it. This page ranks position 8. Effectively this is optimising the deeper page for the same keyword as for the home page through internal anchir text. This deeper page must exist as it has much more detailed information about the product. We want the homepage to rank highest and I'm trying to figure out if we are confusing Google and splitting authority between 2 pages. Best result for us would be to have homepage in position 1 and the deeper page can disappear (total visits would increase). So the question is, is there a solution to do this? My initial thought was use canonical tag on the www.example.com/sample page specifiying www.example.com. Can we do this? Its not duplicate content. Other option I considered is to nofollow links to the deeper page. Again not sure if this will have positive or negative impact. My fear is by removing 40 odd internal links with "sample" anchor text will reduce relevancy of the domain as a whole for the "sample" keyword. Any help much appreciated! Thanks

Impact of mobile pages on current rankings
Morning all - I've been getting a bit of traffic recently for mobile phrases, so am thinking of putting a mobile optimised page on my site which users will be automatically directed to when they visit my site. My question is though, how will this affect the rankings of those current pages which are trying to target mobile users. For example, let's say I've got a page at www.betting.com/iphone which is ranking really well for those users looking to place a few bets on their iPhone. Once I stick my mobile optimised page up anyone clicking through to this URL will be re-directed to a generic mobile landing page at a different URL. Is this likely to effect my rankings of the original www.betting.com/iphone page at all given the fact that all visitors are being immediately re-directed elsewhere? Thanks very much for your help
