Will ranking be improved or hurt by changing 1/5 of part numbers to key words
-
Note: I bold major content for your quick skim for your convenience. Does this help you decide if its a fit for your response?
My site has been devastated by the Panda or unknown reasons so I need to think outside the box.
I distribute industrial products with average brand recognition. I only have about 5 competitors selling this same brand. My other brand competitors are billion dollar companies that pay a lot for PPC and have sites with 10 times the product offering.
Since my brand recognition is not as important as the function.I'm thinking about changing the part numbers to reflect function. This will affect about 1/5of the parts ( about 500 out of 3,000 parts) . My concern is will ranking be hurt or helped by changing these parts with these strong keywords in front of the part for such a high % of the site. The strong keywords cost $10 for a chance at a $200 sale with repeat business.
Example: Current part is: 10-10 Black Plastic; which is a Big Red Truck with my brand part # as 10-10 and comes in different colors of plastic. . Keyword is Big Red Truck. I would like to put my manufactures brand in the description. My same brand competitors sell 10,000 parts and my logic is that if I have the brand in 1/5 of my parts ranking would be improved because of the % of brand per the site versus my same brand competitors..
So I would change the part # to : **Brand 10-10-Black Plastic Big Red Truck **
In conversation I would state the part as:
Brand: 18 characters, Part #: 8, Material:12, Keyword: 27
If the keyword should be first I could change to: K,B P,M. Which is recommended?

red-widget-123 is treated exactly the same was as red widget 123. No need to worry on the difference between dashes and spaces as google treats them the same. My hunch with your product as with all other products I have ever managed is that search volume for redwidget123 is non-existent. If someone is looking for the nordictrack x7 black incline trainer for example, not a soul searches blackinclinetrainerx7. I don't think you will have a problem there and should not optimize for any possible spelling/typing mistakes because they happen so infrequently. If this non-dashed and non-spaced term is searched frequently, there is no harm in adding it to your title as it is all one word and not repeating the same phrase again.

Thank you for the response. I have another related question. My best selling part
is Red-Widget-123. If I search for this I come up #3. The manufacturer is 1 and 2.
If I search for Redwidget123 my competitor comes up. In another queston an " authority" told me to make the tile page Red-widge-123 /Redwidget123. Since you state this is stuffing how do I get better ranking for when customers mistakenly do not add the dashes.

Search engines do not view keywords as trickery. Keyword stuffing is what they are concerned with. For example, if your part was Widget 123 that is Red and does XYZ, then this is a bad title:
Red Widget 123 for XYZ | 123 Widget- Red for XYZ | Red XYZ Widget- 123 | Widget 123- Red- XYZ
That is keyword stuffing. That's repeating the same thing over and over in a different order. A good title would simply be:
Red Widget #123 for XYZ
That's it. No trickery there. If you make your titles include both the part number used by the manufacturer and a keyword rich description of the product, you will be doing just fine.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm including more background information but the question below probably can be answered without it. I did some searching before I replayed. The complete part numbers are the manufactures part numbers. They show up on searches but the manufacturer is the only listing. This 10-10 part is an assembly that only VAD's selll. The manufacture has the part # only and selles the component parts and we are a VAD and purchase the components and assemble and sell it.
The manufacturer also makes units ( usually sold to OEM) that are completely assembled, less cost, higher need The manufacture sells about 200,000/yr each of the major part 2 parts at $14.00 each and for the assblies we are discussing, maybe 100 in the last 5 years. at $300 each. I am usually the only one on the planet that pays for PPC for the exact part # opf the high volume part and it only cost $.20 and the average sale is $100
So, if I use the exact part # in the title I would get the replacement part business for the 100 in the filed when they fail .
Question: ** Since these low volume part #'s are so rarely searched will it help ranking or hurt ranking to have 1/5 of my part numbers****** with these strong keywords in front of the part for such a high % of the site**.. Will it be viewed by the engines as trickery.**

That's a bit complicated and hard to follow without a link to the site in question. I have experience in this field so I'll share what I think.
I work with a sprinkler store online that sells parts of other brands. Those brands have their own online stores as well, he is just a dealer. However, those parts have unique model numbers. The search volume isn't for say "digital garden hose timer" so much as it is for "[brand name] [part number] timer" for example. If people are looking for a specific part, they will identify it by part number more often than not, rarely by just a description.
So if your 10-10 part number is universal and people look for the 10-10 black plastic part, great, you're good. If those are part numbers only you are using for internal tracking purposes, drop it and use the part number from the manufacturer that is searched more or include descriptive keywords in the titles.
I think your first step should be to decide what your keywords are. Are you going after searches that include part numbers? Searches that have descriptive keywords about the part? Or both? Once you figure that out, then figure out search volume and competition for them, you should be able to prioritize keywords for each part and then adjust your titles accordingly. Hope that answers the question you were asking.

Hi,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JamesHancocks1
I was wondering what this would be used for as it's in the Robots.exe of a recruitment agency website that posts jobs. Should it be removed? Disallow: /jobs/?
Disallow: /jobs/page/*/ Thanks in advance.

6 months Later - 0 Domain Authority/Page Authority and losing Rankings
Hi Moz, Sorry if this comes across as a "Do My Job For Me" type of post but we are an E-Commerce store that have been live since January but have not seen any increase in performance on our site and over the past month, have even seen our rankings decrease. We have 1300 products on site and about 1500 pages in total. 1. As for on-site optimization, we have got 2 reviews and follow up reviews with a highly reputable reviewer from People Per Hour and solved any issues she has found. 2. Updated the Meta Data for products and Alt Descriptions for images focusing on the keywords we wish to rank for. We post weekly blogposts linking back to our products. 3. Social Media Campaigns with regular campaigns on FaceBook, Pinterest, Google+ and Twitter. 4. Attempted to build FOLLOW backlinks to articles relating to products on our site. We have also considered purchasing backlinks to improve our situation as we have yet to see any of these pages be crawled by Google over a month later. I have read a guides on Moz and other sites on how to improve our authority and improve rankings but none have offered much by way of practical solution. My question being, is this just a matter of patience or should I be worried/improving anything given we have 0 Domain Authority and Page Authority on all pages? Thanking you in advance, SEO Novice.

What will happen if we 302 a page that is ranking #1 in google for a high traffic term?
We're planning to test something and we want to 302 a page to another page for a period of time. The question is, the original page is ranking #1 for a high traffic term. I want to know what will happen if we do this? Will we lose our rank? Will the traffic remain the same? Ultimately I do not want to lose traffic and I do not want to 301 until it has been properly tested.

Domain.com/postname vs. Domain.com/blog/postname
I am wondering what is the best practice regarding blogs? I read that it would be best to structure a website like a pyramide instead of a flat panckage But I have seen many blogs where the post shows right after the domain name. Domain.com/postname instead of Domains/blog/postname My point is that if a website has many post then the structure will get very flat and this will maybe make your most optimized and important pages less important to google domain.com/page a) What do you think about this, which one of the two blog solutions do you prefer and why? b) in context to blog If for instance you had a keyword like Copenhagen property would you then consider renaming your blog to realetateagent.com/Copenhagen-property-news/post-name c) Would write a little intro like 200 words for the page 1 of your blog and add in some keywords.

Wrong pages ranking for key terms
Hi, I have a website that was rebuilt and redesigned earlier this year, and it's struggling to rank. The problem is that the wrong pages are ranking for the key terms. For example, there is a page for 'Loft Conversions Essex' but the page that's ranking is actually the FAQ page (which doesn't mention the word 'Essex' at all). I have been through all of the usual items, and none of them seem to apply: The landing pages have been properly optimised (not overly so), while the pages that rank only contain the terms within the menu (the link that goes to the actual landing page) We thought it may be a redirect issue since the site was a bit of a mess before the rebuild, so we removed all of the redirects and resubmitted the htaccess file but that hasn't helped Internal anchor text is relevant There aren't a huge number of external links to the old site pages, and many of these pages didn't exist at all so I don't think that's an issue Most of the pages were built at the same time so there's no real reason why one would have more authority than another There are no canonicals interfering with these pages I can't really canonical these since we do want the pages to rank, it's just that they're all ranking for the wrong thing (so the SERPs are a lot lower than they should be). Most of these pages are pretty new, as I said, so while we have tried smaller content changes I don't think a full refresh will really help. To make it even weirder, the pages that rank for each term change regularly but it's never the right page. Help! EDIT: Thanks for the responses everyone!

My site is always in the top 4 on google, and sometimes goes to #2\. But the site at #1 is always at #1 .. how can i beat them?
So i'm sure this is a very generic question.. of course everyone wants to be #1. We are an ecommerce web site. We have all sorts of products, user ratings, and are loved by our customers. We sell over 3 million a year. So let me give you some data.. First of all one of the sites that keeps taking the #2 or #3 spot is amazons category for what we sell.. (i'm not sure if I should say who we are here.. as I don't want the #1 spot to realize we are trying to take them over!) Amazon of course has a domain authority of 100. But they never take the #1 spot. The other site that takes the #2 and #3 spot is not even selling anything. Happens to be a technical term's with the same name wikipedia page! (i wish google would figure out people aren't looking for that!) Anyways.. every day we bouce back and forth between #4 and #2.. but #1 never changes.. Here are the stats of us verse #1 from moz: #1: Page Authority: 56.8, Root Domains Linking to page: 158, Domain Authority: 54.6: root domains linking to the root domain 1.42k my site: Page Authority: 60.6, Root domains linking to the page: 562, Domain Authority: 52.8: root domains linking to the root domain: 1.03k So they beat us in domain authority SLIGHTLY and in root domains linking to the root domain. So SEO masters.. what do I do to fix this? Get better backlinks? But how.... I can't just email GQ and ask them to write about us can I? I'm open to all things.. Maybe i'm not using moz data correctly.. We should at least be #2. We get #2 every other day.

Changing your URL? Impact on rankings?
I have been thinking about changing our webadres for quite a while but I'm too afraid of the impact on my SERP. I understand I would need to use the Google Change of Address tool & 301 redirects. Am I missing something? What is your experience with changing the URL of a website? How has this impacted your SERP? In the past I heard someone say it will damage the linkjuice by 20%. Is that accurate? If you change the URL, is there a blank period of where your old site nor your new site are indexed? Or does Google handle this transition well?

What are the different tactics for getting ranked/ included in Google finance searches such as http://www.google.com/finance/company_news?q=NASDAQ:ADBE
I don't know what ranking factors they are using for this feed. The results vary greatly from a search done at google.com or google.com/news and google.com/finance I'm working with a website that regularly publishes finance-related news and currently gets traffic from google finance. I'm wondering what we can do to optimize our news articles to possibly show more prominently or more often. Thanks
