Hreflang or not, or something else?

I'm working on a site that has 10 languages served from centrally located core files in Magento. So each language has its own TLD with localised content served from SQL. GWT has also had the preferred country set for each domain.
The problem is that each and every domain is indexed in each of the local Google indexes. In DE Google the FR homepage is ranking higher for the brand keyword. I kind of think I am wasting my time with hreflang but would like some advice whether this is an option or clues how I can handle this situation best.

Are you using the hreflang correctly? it contains both the language and location. If, for example, you french version is being served with the hreflang="fr" that means that users with a French browser should see that page, but not that users in France should see that page.
If you are running an German browser, searching in France, you will probably get the German version first, as the hreflang="de" it's doing it's job. If you'd like to have the french version even for German browsers, you will probably need to add an hreflang="de-FR" and point to the french version.
Even adding all the hreflang tags you may need, Google will ultimately serve what they think is better to the user. There's no way to "force" them, hreflang is just a "guidance"

I think you should add hreflang - you should do everything you can to indicate what country your content is targeted to. Do you have local addresses/phone numbers/currency on each website? These are all signals that can help.
How long has each domain been geotargeted in GWT? Are the sites all the same age? Do they have links from the relevant countries? Maybe Google is taking some time to catch up, or maybe there are reasons why it thinks the FR homepage is more relevant in Germany.

Using Hreflang Tags For Australian Domain Extension
Hi Guys, We have a company with a Australian domain www.domain.com.au which has just launched in the US market. The company is in the process of purchasing the .com version of the domain and then the plan is to have one single global .com site (like apple.com) on a new domain which would be domain.com and put both the (US version) and (Australian Version) on the new domain: domain.com (global). e.g. domain.com/us and domain.com/au However the .com version won't be available till March 2016. The company still wants to launch in the US market asap with it's current .com.au domain. which it has. So basically the current set-up is like this: http://www.domain.com.au/us/ (US homepage) http://www.domain.com.au/ (Australian homepage) I was wondering, does anyone know if hreflang tag can be used on a .com.au extension to target specific pages to the US. e.g. I was wondering will the hreflang tag override the fact that Google would automatically geo-target the .com.au extension to Australia? e.g. would the http://www.domain.com.au/us/ (US version) with the hreflang tag above be considered as the US version, even-though we it's on a .com.au domain extension? Hreflang tag on links to alternate language site
Hey everyone! In the interest of trying to be brief, here's the situation in my favorite form of communication, bullet points! Client has two sites; one is in English and one is in Japanese Each site is a separate URL, no sub-domains or sub-pages Each main page on the English version of the site has a link to the homepage of the Japanese site Site has decent rankings overall, with room for improvement from page 2 to page 1 No Hreflang tags currently used in links to the Japanese version from the English version Given that the site isn't really suffering for most rankings, would this be helpful to implement on the English version? Ideally, I'd like each link to be updated to the corresponding subject matter of the Japanese, but in the interim it seems like identifying to Google that the link on the other side is a different language might be helpful to both the user and to maybe help those rankings on page two creep a little higher to page one. What else rather than posts for linkbuilding?
Hello, My question is: we all know that blogs or great content is the way to good backlinks. But rather than this, what other ways are to build quality links to a website? I for example try researching competition backlinks (with opensiteexplorer), or find directories etc. Is this the right way? I also try to produce great content, but I would have liked more technical SEO tricks for this 🙂 And one more thing: how long links are needed before they impact rankings? Thanks if someone can help! How else to find backlinks for training site

What else should we be doing?
I have several keywords that are on the first or second page, with a couple main ones that we are targeting. Around 9million results for the main keyword we are trying to rank for. We have been writing articles on various high PR sites, posts on various forums with 1-2 signature links, already have been listed in DMOZ/google directory/etc for 8+months, 6 year old domain name, BOTW directory listing and various other directories. We write 1-2 blog posts weekly, and then post the URL on twitter and other social networking sites. 1-2 months ago we re-coded our website to load faster. So, what else should we be doing that we already aren't to make the jump from page 2-3 to page 1? I see a lot of recommendations to reach out to related websites and ask to guest post on their blog or come up with a link. In our industry it is very hard to do this, since most related sites are competitors who are selling a commercial product.
