Bounce Rate a factor?
-
Hi Guys,
I've been SEOing two sites for just over 6 months, making very little headway in the process. All the tactics I have employed work on the many other sites that we do SEO work for.
I have written pages of rich, useful content, metas, built links from various sources, re-built both sites on a better platform, alt tags are optimised etc etc.
This seems to have brought me some success but nothing to write home about.
The only major difference I can see between these two sites and my others is bounce rate. The SEO pages I have produced have a fairly healthy bounce rate (20-30%) which isn't a problem, but, both sites have blogs which draw (a lot of) visitors from various social networks and the bounce rate is through the roof (80-90%) obviously increasing the average for the whole site.
Now, I know there has been various discussions around this with no real outcome but I cannot see what else it can be.
Am I missing something?
I should add that both sites are in competitive sectors but not that competitive to stop me seeing at least top 100 results....

all good advice given above. Have external links like social media sites and external blog urls open in a new window instead of kicking the user off of your site.

Bounce rate is a ranking factor, a major ranking factor - but not the bounce rate you see in Google analytics.
Google only measure and take in consideration the bounce in serps.
The bounce rate that google is taking in consideration is outline bellow:
So if someone is searching for something, clicking on your result but then the user hits the back button and is clicking on a diffrent result in serps without changing the query then that is a bounce.
Sometimes, also for new sites google is pushing pages up in serps in order to have clicks and calculate the user behavior - this bounce rate.
The Google analytics bounce rate is a good internal indicator but I would't spend time on it or "upgrade" it to a number that you should monitor and track.
Hope it helps.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies.
All re-directs are in place and work as they should and unfortunately the blog does attract more visitors and page views than anything else at the moment - something I'm trying to sort out.
The issue I have with the blog is that I don't run it, and no matter how hard I try the guy will not write posts that are relevant to the business! (Well, they are loosely but not the traffic they are looking for)
Moz Rank is 29 and 25 which isn't to far behind the major competitors and above some. The only issues I am seeing are 'too many on page links' which I am addressing but the vast majority of pages with errors are all blog pages.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi
If you were able to share the site URL I would be happy to have a closer look at what could be causing you an issue.
The points Nigel raises are good places to begin, have you used the tools on seomoz to run a campaign and see what Roger says the issues are?

Hi You mention rebuilding on another platform - I assume you made sure if pages changed URL you put in redirects. A blog will tend to have a higher bounce rate as it is something people read and then go. Try adding in more useful links within the content to get people to click through your site. Have you checked the keywords your blog is attracting? Maybe they are not aligned to the blog content. Unless your blog is accounting for the majority of page views and visits I don't think the bounce rate is likely to be your main issue. A high overall bounce rate tells Google people don't find what they were looking for - thus is a contributing factor to search results. You don't mention your website so can't give specific suggestions but have you checked your moz rank / compared to your competitors - that might indicate what else is wrong. All the best Nigel

Any disadvantages of employing additional images which open in new window? Will it impact bounce rate and rankings?
Hi all, Our website is all about our software product. Generally our website pages are filled with 3 to 6 screenshots of our product features. As Google recently shifting to mobile index and pageload speed is going to be priority, we decided to compress the images on our pages and show the same images of large size in new window when someone clicks on a image. I wonder if this helps or has any disadvantages? Users may click on these clickable images while browsing the pages and may shift to new window to view the image. Will this have any negative impact on bounce rate? Please share your thoughts. Thanks

Bounce rate seems to decrease as site climbs the SERP but SERP ranking always drops down after a few days - WHY ?
Like quite a few sites recently we've seen some large fluctuations for our domain the SERPs over the past 6 or so weeks. One thing ive noticed, is that when the site seems to rank higher in the SERPs we get a lower bounce rate. If the sites average across all of its main keywords in #5 the bounce rate is c. 40% (this site is a creative portfolio site, so i guess the niche has a slightly higher bounce rate than normal as you will get some people who click through an notice straight away that the style of the portfolio isnt what they where looking for) But when the sites ranking averages #2-3 the bounce rate tends to be about 25%. (The thing is that we tend to always drop back down after a fews days or so) Has any one else noticed this ?

How soon before author rank becomes a major ranking factor?
Hi, I wanted to pose a question How soon do guys think itll be before author rank becomes a one of Googles major ranking factors? From what I can see the way they have designed it signals that it is only matter of time, before they start using it as a major ranking factor... And I have a question on Author ranks impact on the ability to sell a blog/site in the future. Surely if the blog is tied to an author(s) and the ranking of the site in the search engine is somewhat based on this authors author rank who is a part of the site/blog, then it becomes harder to sell the property if the author is not going to be a part of the property after the sale?. I look forward to your responses on this,

A rating on report card - Massive drop in rankings (Is it Penguin?)
Hi All, I would really like a second opinion on my current issue and I'd be very grateful for the communities knowledge please . I have a been running a successful campaign for one of my clients, increase in natural SERP's, etc. But since the 24th of April they were hit and hit hard and continued to decline now. They had many top 5 listings for terms and now most are not in top 50 serps. Openly I know they have a bad or not great backlink profile which was inherited from the past agency, but we're working on this using white hat techniques, contextual copy, brand etc. The copy is a great, contextual and no where near spammy at all... Very nicely written, factual, etc. What I don't understand is this SEOmoz's On-Page report card gives an A rating for the target term which is also a secondary term but was ranking high. Factor Overview

Critical Factors

4 / 4

High Importance Factors

6 / 7

Moderate Importance Factors

7 / 9

Low Importance Factors

8 / 11

Optional Factors

2 / 5

On-Page Keyword Usage for

Title 1 URL 0 Meta Desc 1 H1 1 H2-4 0 Body 1 B / Strong 1 IMG ALT 0 Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 5 Fall from grace is SERP 5 to 25 and still going down. So the questions are: 1. Has this happened to you? 2. Could it just be down to their bad backlink profile which now needs much more attention? 3. Is this Penguin for sure? 4. What would you recommend? If anyone requires any further info please let me know and thank you in advance. Cheers,

Ranking factors for national and local
What SEO impact factors am I missing if I am ranked 1st on Google for a keyword, but not ranked local search? The keyword being setup like {"company industry" "location" }. Its ranked 4th when searched on google and the location is specific to the location in the keyword. I've tried to varify that all of my citations are correct and identical. When I compare my sites Domain Authority and links to its competitors, I should be dominating that search. If you guys have any incite it would be greatly appreciated. MADD DOGG

SEO ranking factors
Hello I am reading SEO ranking factor (very good informations) and I want to ask: what does it mean: of linking C bloks to page I think that: how many(#) links from the same server (C block) links to your homepage or some pages of your web... of linking IP adresses to page how many web links are going to my web and every links are from another server. if I understand it good, it is no different between, if you have links from webpages in one server (one C block) or from webpages on another servers as your web is, because both correlation is 0.25... THX Could anybody expalin me, what does it mean: # of External Links w/ Partial Match Anchor Text http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#metrics-5 The number of external links and all these external links contain partial match anchor text from my query: (I am finding in Google "tennis" and see in SERP domain www.usta.com. # of External Links w/ Partial Match Anchor Text: tells me the number how many external links contain partial match anchor text "play tennis, tennis school, tennis info..."? )
