Translating meta tags using WPML and AIO SEO
-
Having a heck of a time finding info on this one...
We're working on a multilingual website which uses WPML. I've used the All in One SEO plugin to customize meta data (title, description, etc). These strings do not appear in the list of translations in WPML.
Does anyone have any experience with this setup? How do you enable WPML to translate meta data set via the AIO plugin?
Thanks!
-
Update here.
Long story short, you need to upgrade to All-in-One SEO Pack Pro to allow translation of meta fields.
Our implementation is somewhat complicated, with the aim being to make the workflow for our translators as easy as possible. We use a self-hosted server running Weblate to manage string translation (both for our websites and for our product). On the Wordpress site we use a customised version of the WPML plugin.
Things got complicated when exporting strings from WPML and importing to Weblate – talking to the sys admin who implemented it, the meta fields from All-in-One SEO were even trickier to get working.
In any case, all working now Keep any eye out for our site update coming soon here: https://vivaldi.com
If anyone out there runs into this issue and needs details feel free to get in touch.

Still haven't resolved this one (unfortunately) - no response from AIO or WPML. I'll make note to update here once I have some answers!
-
So Jon have you found the solution to the problem? If yes maybe you can mark this as answered? Thnks
-
Checking it out. Will leave a comment in this thread once I hear back in case anyone is curious.
Thanks!

We're using the free version at the moment. Waiting for a response from AIO & WPML to confirm, but it's looking like this is a pro feature.
Thanks for your help in any case!
-
Hmm that could be, but you should confirm with AIO and WPML support
-
Hi Jon
Do you have the pro version of AIO? Apparently, if you do then the correct translation is sent to each of the language versions of a page or post.
https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/translating-all-in-one-seo/
Maybe it doesn't work with teh unpaid version?
Whatever you need the meta titles and descriptions to be in the correct language - little point having them in English.

Thanks! I did see that page. The confusing thing is that the strings shown in their screenshots don't display in our implementation. The custom fields for 'aioseo' aren't listed as available to translate.
Could this be a feature of their Pro version that they don't explicitly advertise...?

Thanks for the reply
We're all set re: hreflang tags for the pages. My concern is that I'm using the AIO plugin to customize the meta title & description. So, although the correct version of the page will be listed in SERPs (e.g example.com/fr/ for French users), the link preview will still display the English meta info.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks!
Jon

Hi Jon
I am with Joseph here - I use Yoast as well.
Just make sure that if you have multi-language version fo pages that you specify the hreflang tag on each.

Long Title Tags
Hi guys, We have product e-commerce title tags which are over 60 characters - around 80 plus. The reason we added them in there is to incorporate

more information for Google. The format of these title tags are: Name + Colour + Rug Type + Origin Name = for people searching for the name of the rug
Color = people searching for a specific color
Type = The type of rug (e.g. normal or designer)
Origin = Where the rug is for. So this title will cover people searching for: People searching for designer rugs, the specific colour and also where it comes from. This then results in the title tag going way over 60 characters - around 80-90 characters. -- Would it be wise to try and shrink it down to under 60 characters, and what would be a good approach to do this? Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -
New Yoast SEO Wordpress Plugin - Using Passive Voice In Copy?
Hi all, we wondered if anyone is using the updated version of Yoast's SEO plugin for Wordpress? We use it on our Woocommerce website (along with the Woocommerce extension) and the latest version seems to have focussed on moving the writing style on. To avoid using passive voice. https://kb.yoast.com/kb/passive-voice/ We're struggling a bit to get this right, it seems to be quite a change to our current style...so we're wondering if anyone else has been looking at this and feeling like they are getting it right? Or if anyone has any resources good for helping to write more in this way? How important do people think this is? Many thanks, James & Ally

I'm struggling right now to determine the best approach for our own SEO. Our website is http://phase2solutions.net. What suggestions would you have on the approach here? Feel free to share your service as well as the tactical end is something we are looking to outsource. Thank you.

Can you use multiple rel alternate tags for different device subdomains?
When redirecting from desktop to mobile with a separate URL structure, you need to have a rel alternate - rel canonical handshake to define the relationship between the pages. But if you have a different subdomain for different mobile devices, can you add more than one rel alternate tag on the desktop page? EG if site.com is redirecting to iphone.site.com, m.site.com, android.site.com

Blog tags are creating excessive duplicate content...should we use rel canonicals or 301 redirects?
We are having an issue with our cilent's blog creating excessive duplicate content via blog tags. The duplicate webpages from tags offer absolutely no value (we can't even see the tag). Should we just 301 redirect the tagged page or use a rel canonical?

When I view html code of our website, I see this from yoast plugin this. I guess there is really something wrong, especially the page 2? Why so many meta? When ask the support team of the plugin, the developer said me that it is caused by the theme. <html xmlns="<a class="attribute-value">http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml</a>" lang="<a class="attribute-value">en-US</a>"><head><meta http-equiv="<a class="attribute-value">Content-Type</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">text/html; charset=UTF-8</a>" /><meta name="<a class="attribute-value">google-site-verification</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">hRZ9ZRlCURkbiJA5Ewf6VJlSfGZipdXnumAKlHcrHaQ</a>" /><title>Villas Diani | Kenya Luxury Beach Holidaystitle><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">stylesheet</a>" href="[http://villasdiani.com/wp-content/themes/decorum/style.css](view-source:http://villasdiani.com/wp-content/themes/decorum/style.css)" type="<a class="attribute-value">text/css</a>" media="<a class="attribute-value">screen</a>" /><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" type="<a class="attribute-value">application/rss+xml</a>" title="<a class="attribute-value">RSS Feed</a>" href="[http://villasdiani.com/feed/](view-source:http://villasdiani.com/feed/)" /><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">pingback</a>" href="[http://villasdiani.com/xmlrpc.php](view-source:http://villasdiani.com/xmlrpc.php)" /><meta name="<a class="attribute-value">description</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">Indian Ocean Villas in Kenya, Diani Beach Resort. Suggestions for a SEO Review
I think it would be beneficial to have a third party seo review of the network of sites my team and I manage and was wondering if any of you had suggestions for what sort of tests should be done or that we should expect to see done during one of these reviews. We are a small team who has varying seo experience and have been working hard to make improvements to our sites in the past year. Most of our sites have been completely overhauled in the last 12-16 months and seo work that had not been done in the past has been setup, along with some corrections that may have been harming seo. We believe we are on the right track and have learned a good amount about seo in that time, but it would be nice to have some "expert" feedback outside of our office to get a clearer picture on anything we may be missing or some suggested improvements. A sort of double check on the work we have done.
