Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
-
We are considering moving some thin content from our site to a subdomain as a potential "panda" fix. But, we are unsure if Google will treat the subdomain as a completely separate domain or not. Does anyone have any data / Google info that might answer this question? Thanks in advance for your help!
-
the only way to inoculate the main domain if you go with a subdomain is if the topical focus of each is very different. If they're very similar, it's much more difficult to pull off. Of course if they're different enough, that's valid reason to not interlink.
If they're totally related, and there's no interlinking, it could be perceived as attempting to stuff search results with multiple entries.
-
Also, does it depend on how the subdomain is treated? I know in some cases Google will treat the subdomain as a separate domain, depending on interlinking.
-
Good suggestion, but unfortunately the content cannot be consolidated or changed (it is a directory of information). So, you do have personal experience with clients that shows that poor quality on a subdomain will affect the primary domain? Thank you!
-
I only have my own experience with clients and unfortunately can not point to case studies.
One alternative would be to consider keeping it on the main site and finding a way to consolidate some or all of it so you end up with more content per page.
-
Thank you. Can you elaborate on "entirely separately"? Exactly how separate are subdomains? Would no-indexing the content be a solution?
-
Thank you for your quick response. The "thin" content constitutes about 35% of the current traffic, and has potential for improvement in the future, so we prefer not to permanently eliminate it. We are searching for an immediate solution to show Google that content on the primary domain has improved. Do you have any external sources (google quotes) to show that poor content on a subdomain affects the primary domain as well? Thank you.

"Panda is a filter that Google has designed to spot what it believes are low-quality pages. Have too many low-quality pages, and Panda effectively flags your entire site. Being Pandified, Pandification — whatever clever name you want to call it — doesn’t mean that your entire site is out of Google. But it does mean that pages within your site carry a penalty designed to help ensure only the better ones make it into Google’s top results."From http://searchengineland.com/why-google-panda-is-more-a-ranking-factor-than-algorithm-update-82564Sub domains are not treated entirely separately. Moving content will not help, you need to improve it or lose it.

simply moving thin content, isn't advised under any circumstance, unless you don't care about organic search for the site it's on. If that is the case, then the site its on should be a stand-alone domain, not just a subdomain.
While the impact of it being on a subdomain will be less significant than the main domain, it's all part of the root domain package. Everything on a subdomain ultimately impacts the root domain and all others in that group.

301 Old domain with HTTPS to new domain with HTTPS
I am a bit boggled about https to https we redirected olddomain.com to https://www.newdomain.com, but redirecting https://www.olddomain.com or non-www is not possible. because the certificate does not exist on a level where you are redirecting. only if I setup a new host and add a htaccess file will this work. What should I do? just redirect the rest and hope for the best?

Does integration of external supplemenatry data help or hurt regarding googles perception of content quality? (e.g weather info, climate table, population info, currency exchange data via API or open source databases)
We just lost over 20% traffic after google algo update at June 26.

In SEO forums people guess that there was likely a Phantom update or maybe a Panda update. The most common advice I found was adding more unique content. While we have already unique proprietary content on all our pages and we plan to add more, I was also considering to add some content from external sources. Our site is travel related so I thought about adding for each city page external data such as weather, climate data, currency exchange data via APIs from external sources and also some data such as population from open source databases or some statistical info we would search on the web. I believe this data would be useful to the visitors. I understand that purely own content would be ideal and we will work on this as well. Any thoughts? Do you think the external data may rather help or hurt how google perceives content quality?0 -
Ranking Above sub-domains
So I work for a company that has a very successful affiliate that operates under a third level domain name such as "region.company.com". Their SEO practices are very good and they rank highly in keyword searches. However "company.com" does not even though it is not a subdomain. Even after optimizing the company.com's pages etc, the regional sub domain ranks much higher for keywords and the main company fails to rank at all. Is Google discounting the main company's page? Is it a matter of trust or time? or is it something else? How can I get Google to prioritize the main company website rather than a lower level domain affiliate?

Merging Domains
Up until last week, we had separate domains for each of our 3 products. We've now merged two products to sit under one URL. The merge coincided with a CMS upgrade which effectively killed all of our old URLs save for the homepage. Is it best for me to 301 the old homepage to it's new place, as well as the rest of the old site's top pages to according pages on the new site? Or is there a better solution?

Move webshop domain to the brand domain?
Hello, A client of mine has a brand with a website for over 10 years now.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Seeders
About 4 years ago the have opened a webshop on an other domain (like www.brandnamewebshop.com). At this moment the brand domain has a seomoz authority of 45.
The webshop domain authority is 25. The question:
Would it not be better to transfer the webshop to the brand domain because of the domain authority? If so, how can this be done the best way? With a 301?
I also think: what a loss of energy of building the authority on the other domain.
Is it an idea to use both domains for a webshop and rewrite the content? Or is there an other way to still make use of the built up domain authority? Would it really help the other domain when I make a 301 redirect (and make use of the pointing links to the webshop domain?). I hope somebody have some experience with this...
Looking forward to the possibilities! Gerjan0 -
Aged domain and 301 redirect? (11 year old domain)
Hey everyone, I'm about to launch a new website for an accounting firm. They currently have a website, which has an 11 year old domain. They are doing very well locally for SEO, and i'm guessing it's because of the aged domain, as their website is very badly built, and contains almost no content. They would like to launch the new site with a simpler, easier to remember domain. If i launch the new site, point the aged domain using a 301 redirect, and do redirects for all of the old pages to the newer versions of them, is there a chance the company will lose their current SEO rankings? Thanks!

Exact match domain marketing?
Hi All, I've managed to secure a couple of exact match domains that are closely related to my main site but I'm a bit unsure of how to make best use of them. My plan is to generate revenue by ranking high for the exact match terms, moving the visitor onto the main site to take their details and payment. Naturally I want this satelite site to be very similar so that I can keep the brand continuety going and maintain a smooth transition to the main site. My main concerns however are: Will I get punished for using the same Navigation menu, logo and code as my main site? The navigation menu will link to pages on the main site, and this satelite site will most likely only consist of an index page and about 5 - 10 individual content pages. 2)I want the branding on this satelite site to be the same as my main site. Will I be punished for the difference in branding vs domain name? I know the SE's are unlikely to pick it up because the logo is an image but is there a risk of human editing? I want to link from the main site to the satelite site to give it a bit of a boost and to get through a possible sandbox. If the satelite has numerous links to the main site and the main site is linking to the satelite site will there be any benefit? Never tried to create a site like this so a bit nervous about impacting the main site. Thank in advance.

With Panda, which is more important, traffic or quantity?
If you were to prioritize how to fix a site, would you focus on traffic or quantity of urls? So for example, if 10% of a site had thin content, but accounted for 50% of the traffic and 50% of the site had a different type of thin content but only accounted for 5% of organic traffic, which would you work on first? I realize both need to be fixed, but am unsure of which to tackle first (this is an extremely large site). Also, I am wondering if the simply the presence of thin content on a domain can affect a site even if it isn't receiving any traffic.
