Brands for services
-
What would be a logical way to set the correct brands if you offer a service like "WordPress Design" or "Web Design" or "Magento Development". At the moment just using my company name "WhatsTheBigIdea" or "Whats The Big Idea" seems to be my brands, not the app brands that I work with. Please explain. Thanks!

I was just wondering what's SEOMOZ term "brands" meant in their application|tools so that I can take advantage of it. Thanks.

Building a brand for a service isn't as easy as say, for a product and can cost huge sums of money. I have never tried to help anyone build a brand where it hasn't been a hugely expensive exercise.
I don't tend to worry about brand building myself though, just because I get my work through referrals primarily - however, I think I am more well known for my name than I am for my company name.
What would I do in your shoes? Without knowing what you already do, you need to dominate your field through articles, blog posts, social media, guest-blogging, public speaking, etc. - it's a never ending list of ways to try and gain publicity.

Here's question: what's your brand?
-
Thanks for your reply. Which is best? I suspect that since "WordPress", "Magento", "osCommerce" and other tools I use are more recognizable than my company name, then that it may be the right direction to pursue. My brand is my company name [WhatsTheBigIdea] though it says little about me.

Without mentioning the platforms you work with, you are never going to have brand influence until someone visits your website.
However, brand management is not a 2 minute subject as there are nuances that need to be looked at such as who your audience are, where they find you, opportunities to name-drop, how you advertise, how you are perceived - the list goes on.
So are you looking to piggy-back your service based on the platforms that you work with? or just build a brand of your own?

Branded keywords
I'm trying to understand this concept a little further. Say if I create a branded keyword, "dc widgets" I then start to add keywords such as "maker" "toy" and apply the branded keyword to it. Does this mean that they then become "maker dc widgets" and "toy dc widgets" ? What purpose does branded keywords offer?

ThisPC Seems like the brand rule is a exact match but that doesn't work for this kind of keywords, right? Thank you Regards0 -
I'm having a hard time understanding branded keywords. When wouldn't I want to brand a keyword?
For example, why wouldn't I want to brand all my keywords with my company name?

Best Online Branding Strategies?
Hi all, The CEO of my company wants me to start branding the company, basically from the ground up. I've been doing a bunch of reading on how to properly do this and only got so far as to be reiterated the same exact jargon everywhere I go: -"Put your logo everywhere" -"Have a clear company motto" -"Use branded keywords in backlinks" -"Include your logo and social links in company-wide email signatures" -"Make sure your brochures match your website, etc. etc. etc." I've not yet seen something I feel is worthy to report back to big boss as far as an good SEO strategy that is impressively branding central. Can anyone refer me to some GREAT articles with a to b instructions on exactly how to implement these branding strategies? The more creative the better. I'd be forever appreciative! Derek

Over 90% of anchor text tends to be brand-name on OSE link profiles. Why?
I reported this as a bug in OSE, because often I explore these links and find that the pages include both a brand-name link AND a regular keyword link, but for some reason OSE was only reporting the brand-name link... This led me to wonder how many links this occurred for, and therefore whether or not to trust the fact that the majority of the sites I ran OSE on returned at least (in most cases, more) than 90% brand-name links. I understand that brand-name links are amongst the most important to obtain, but that it's also important to get anchor text for keywords to build a varied profile. Given this apparent flaw in OSE, is it wrong - in the case of very successful sites - to take this ~90% as being anywhere near the correct percentage of brand-name links that I should be aiming for as a proportion of the total profile? Extra Credit :)... And this may help potentially help resolve the issue: does "Inbound Links" tab in OSE just report links to the Root Domain, or to that and every other page on the site?
