Are my translated pages damaging my ranking?
-
Hi there,
I have a site in English but with duplicates in different languages.
The first problem is that these translated versions of my site receive no ranking on google stars (while the english does) - why is this?
The second problem is that SEOmoz counts the errors on my site and then duplicates this error count for all the translated versions of my site - meaning I have a huge amount of errors (too many on-page links).
Add this to the fact that I use affilite ID´s to track different types of traffic to my site - so all page urls in english and other languages, with an affiliate id on the end of the url, count as an error.
This means I have a huge amount of on page errors indicated by SEOmoz, plus no ranking for my translated pages - I think this is really harming my overall ranking and site trust.
What are your opinions on this?

Is there a subdomain for each language?
Is there a "default" language that exists on the primary domain (i.e. English on www.yourwebsite.com)?
Are you using rel href lang, X-Default Hrefe Lang, rel canonical, or other "tags" or solutions for this at the moment?
If you could share the website address we wouldn't have to ask these questions, by the way. I know that is especially tough on client sites, but I just wanted to say that Dave has asked some vital questions, including the one about setting each subdomain as its own language / geographic target audience. Here is what he is asking about: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=62399
It is not necessary to have completely unique content for each language, as someone suggested below.
-
Bryan I really don't think that is what Dave is saying.
-
Did you claim the subdomain as a new language in webmaster tools?
-
Hi dave, thanks for your reply.
Our translations across the site are as a subdomain, they are hand-translated
-
What dave is saying is it's better to have unique content for each language because it gets crawled.
-
Do you have the translations on language specific TLDs or as a subfolder or a subdomain on your current site? Is the translation being done by a widget or was the content hand-translated by a professional translator?

How do hreflang attributes affect ranking?
We have a site in English. We are considering translating the site into Dutch. If we use a hreflang attribute does that mean we have to create a duplicate page in Dutch for each English page, or does Google auto-translate? How would duplicate pages, even if they are in a different language, affect ranking?

How do these issues apply to a Chinese website? Should I ignore the issues on Moz regarding this? Thanks.

What is the current thinking about translated versions of pages? Is it necessary
My company is about to do a big push in China. We can get our homepage translated in Chinese at a very reasonable price. My questions are: Is it worth it? Do browsers to an adequately job of translating pages? If it is worth it: Can someone suggest a good post explaining what to do with the translation? What are the SEO implications? Thank you

Translating URLs worth it?
My company has content in 23 different languages in 30+ countries. We translate page content but we don't translate URLs. I am trying to figure out whether it would be worth the considerable extra overhead to translate the URLs as well. I'd really appreciate hearing the thoughts of the Moz community. Thanks in advance!

How fast is my front page?
Yesterday, I changed all of my front page structure from tables to divs. I think this has improved page load time, but I am in Australia, so it is hard to tell. Using Firefox with Firebug tells me the load time here is between 4 to 6 seconds. One of my editors is in Houston, and she says 2 seconds. I'm hoping you can help me, it will take less than a minute. Can you load the front page and tell me how long it takes - and where you are - Country/State Also, if you click to a story, how long does that take? http://newsblaze.com I am working on the story page template too, but it will take longer to get right, because it also is the same for 3 other areas, so I have to be more careful. It would also be nice to get a before and after snapshot from various places. The reason I care about shaving off a second or two is that I've been told google may now care about loading speed, and they are rejecting my new adsense account because of poor user experience on my site, and I have no idea what they mean by that, so I'm clutching at straws.

CcTLD not ranking in other country.
I'm trying to rank a .im domain in Australia and having a hard time getting any traction at all. GWT won't let me geo-target the domain for Australia. It is currently set for Isle of Man. Thinking of registering a .com.au (same domain isn't available, but I can get something close) and mirror the site completely. I'd canonical all urls on the .com.au to the corresponding .im pages - would this make a difference? Also, since the linkbuilding is being done for the .im domain - I think I'll have to start over on the .com.au domain. Thoughts, tips and insight highly appreciated mozzers!

Is there a correlation between ranking and different TLD
I've been thinking about buying some domains recently with some different extensions. In particular domains with country specific TLD's such as .in and .be etc.. But my question is has anyone had experience ranking domains like these in the UK market. Is there a correlation between ranking and a country specific domain to rank in the UK market? I know I can target these domains at the UK market in GWMT, but is there a negative factor in trying to rank say a .in the UK?
