E-Commerce Multilanguage - Better on Subdomains?
-
Hi,
We have an e-commerce store in English and Spanish - same products. URLs differ like this:
ENGLISH:
www.mydomain.com/en/manufacturer-sku-productnameinenglish.htmlSPANISH:
www.mydomain.com/es/manufacturer-sku-productnameinspanish.htmlAll content on pages is translated, e.g, H1, Titles, keywords, descriptions and site content itself is in the language displayed.
Is there a risk of similar or near dupe content here in the eyes of the big G?
Would it be worth implementing different languages on subdomains or completely different domains?
thank you
B

That's exactly right. In fact, a couple of years ago many SEO's believed that sub folders would have more SEO value than subdomains, as it would ensure that all of the SEO "strength", as it were, would pass to the root domain.
We've moved away from this now as people have tested subdomains and found that the strength passes equally to them as well. Whether you go with subdomains or sub-folders, either way the SEO value will pass.

Hi Tom.
Thank you for your answer - Sounds good, so as far as your answer goes, using sub-folders is similar in seo value as subdomains?
Thanks again

Hey B
That setup will be fine - using sub-folders or sub-domains is a fine way of serving different language content.
If everything is translated as you say, there won't be any risk of duplicate content coming from the translations.
The only potential risk of dupe content would be if the product pages are "thin" on content. That is to say, if there is not enough content on the page, Google might think all of the pages look the same.
Run the website through SEO-Browser and look at how the page appears to the Google bot. Once the bot has seen all of the site navigation and the footer, is there enough on the product pages to differentiate themselves from the other. If there isn't, add more content - such as extra bits of product descriptions or reviews.
Hope this helps.

Domains vs Subdomains for similar brands.
Hi all! I work for a company who have 6 different brands in the same industry targeted at different demographics. Some of them have a lot of history and are well known and respected, others are newer targeted at different price points/ types of people. I've been asked to input on there ongoing web strategy; should they use sub domains or individual branded domains. Previously that had separate brand domains but a new MD wanted to bring everything together into one website. The branded domains were redirected to the new site and it has been going along fine, albeit having lost 1/3rd or so organic traffic. Now a new management team has been brought in and they want to re-structure the website again to put more focus on the brands. Any new website will be on a brand new domain anyway as they are also re branding their main website. What will work better, separate branded domains or sub domains of one website? From what I understand, SEO won't be much different between the two options, but it feels like the bigger historical brands should have individual websites purely from a branding perspective. Thanks for any input!

We are switching our CMS local pages from a subdomain approach to a subfolder approach. What's the best way to handle this? Should we redirect every local subdomain page to its new subfolder page?
We are looking to create a new subfolder approach within our website versus our current subdomain approach. How should we go about handling this politely as to not lose everything we've worked on up to this point using the subdomain approach? Do we need to redirect every subdomain URL to the new subfolder page? Our current local pages subdomain set up: stores.websitename.com How we plan on adding our new local subfolder set-up: websitename.com/stores/state/city/storelocation Any and all help is appreciated.

Ranking way worse than competitor even with better SEO metrics
Hello Moz Helpsters! I write you since I feel I'm missing something BIG and I'm sure that with all your experience you can find easily what's wrong. Here is my situation: We rank pretty bad on several KW and our competitor does well. BUT:

- our pages are graded higher
- our pages load faster
- our pages have more more links
- our pages have more popularity I feel there is something BIG I'm missing but I can't get to it. Can you have a look and see if you find any BIG issue we could have missed? Here are two pages for a good comparison. Both are ranking on "medecin generaliste paris" (translation: "general practitioner paris"):
- our page ranking #90: https://www.keldoc.com/medecin-generaliste/paris
- our competitor ranking #11: https://www.doctolib.fr/medecin-generaliste/paris Any help on this is veeeeryyy welcome 🙂0 -

My local website was hit by google and I have done all steps to remove the penalty, But it's still not ranked. So it is better to make a new website with new content and start working on it?

What should I do when there is no more stock for a product (e-commerce) ?
I´ve several clientes with magento, wp and brazilian Vtex.... usually when a product is out of stock the system allow you to delete or desallow but you will create a 404 erros. There is a plugin to redirect disallow products to home os a personalized page... looks good. But I´ve just realized when you edit the name (and url) of a product it creats automatic redirect of the product... Now I´m wondering never delete or disallow a product page anymore.... always edit with a new product so the redirect can send some PR to the new produtc.... Sounds too stupid or make any sense?

Subdomains
HI there We have the following situation: www.client.com/home at /home we will have a iframe calling a subdomain data.client.com . We need to use this structure because the server structure our client have. Is there any way i can index just www.client.com/home instead the subdomain, but include the data from the iframe to be indexed ? saying that because if google shows up the subdomain page on the search results, it will not bring anything as we need /home to the iframe/subdomain to work. So, google should just index /home and the data from the subdomain, but not the subdomain itself. Does it make sense? If not, any recommendation how it should be setup? Appreciate any help.

Franchise sites on subdomains
I've been asked by a client to optimise a a webpage for a location i.e. London. Turns out that the location is actually a franchise of the main company. When the company launch a new franchise, so far they have simply added a new page to the main site, for example: mysite.co.uk/sub-folder/london They have so far done this for 10 or so franchises and task someone with optimising that page for their main keyword + location. I think I know the answer to this, but would like to get a back up / additional info on it in terms of ranking / seo benefits. I am going to suggest the idea of using a subdomain for each location, example: london.mysite.co.uk Would this be the correct approach. If you think yes, why? Many thanks,

If we add noindex to a subdomain, will the traffic to that subdomain still generate domain authority for the primary domain?
We are trying to decide whether a password protected site, that we will noindex, should be set up as a subdomain or if it should be its own domain. The determining factor here is whether or not having that noindexed subdomain will increase domain authority since its noindexed. Any ideas???
