The error you are seeing is for our old crawler, which had some issues crawling certain sites based on security settings. We launched a new crawler on June 7th, and you should be seeing much better data in the Site Crawl section of your campaign now.

It is a bit difficult for me to tell from this post exactly which URL that you are referring to, but I took a look at your full site crawl and narrowed it down using the page title "Astronaut Costumes", per the code you pasted above. Of the two pages with that title, http://www.interstellarstore.com/toys-and-costumes/astronaut-costumes and http://www.interstellarstore.com/astronaut-costumes, neither is being reported in the site crawl or the page optimization reports as missing the meta description. (Page optimization actually reports that the meta descriptions are too long.)

However, I definitely see that there are a large number of other pages in your crawl that are reported as missing the meta description. For the handful of those I checked, it does look like that error is being reported correctly. It looks like you've submitted a support request to our help team, so it would be very helpful if you could follow up there with specific examples of pages that are reported as missing the meta description, but that actually have the meta description in the source code so they can look into this further for you.

Yes, asking and responding to questions is a paid feature. Unfortunately, this means you wouldn't be able to respond to old questions you have posted if you no longer have a paid subscription.

You can, however, gain access to the Q&A forum without a paid account by getting over 500 MozPoints, which you can learn more about here. You can do that by adding valuable comments to the blog posts, completing your account profile, writing a blog post that gets accepted to the YouMoz blog, and a few other things noted in that link, as well.

It is important to keep in mind that the Search Visibility metric relates only to the keywords you are tracking, so it isn't exactly correct to say that the Search Visibility score is skewed if you are tracking branded keywords. This is an accurate visibility score for the keywords you are tracking.

You can definitely see the Search Visibility for all of your non-branded keywords by using the filters as you suggested, which will give you a different perspective of your Search Visibility versus your competitors.

However, you could say that, in and of itself, the score is somewhat skewed just by the fact that these are the keywords you have chosen to target, rather than the total Search Visibility for all of the keywords you and your competitors may be ranking for. If your competitors aren't specifically targeting the same keywords you are tracking, you may be ranking better for those keywords, but you may not necessarily be as competitive in the overall rankings for every keyword. Our metrics can only be calculated for the terms you choose to track, so it is really just a view of the keywords you are targeting and not necessarily the full picture of your visibility as a site overall.

Asking questions in the Q&A is actually a paid Pro feature, but you will still be able to read questions and answers and read or comment on the blog with a free account. The Learn section of the site, apart from the Q&A forum, is free to browse and does not require a paid account.

I took a look at your campaign and it seem that this is a bit different than the case in the previous post that Thomas linked to in his reply.

It actually looks like you have a redirect loop in place which could be confusing our bot, Roger. The robots.txt page redirects to the www version of the homepage, which redirects to an /en/home subfolder, which redirects to /en/home?r=US. You can verify this using the third party tool https://httpstatus.io/ (http://www.screencast.com/t/pk4fvGXJ1).

I can't say with entire certainty that this is causing the error message you are seeing, as I have never seen a redirect loop on the robots.txt file for a site, but I do know that the crawler will only follow two redirects and any more redirects than that will prevent us from accessing the page, which would likely be reported as an error with the robots.txt.

I would recommend fixing that so that you have only one 301 in place that points to a 200 page or by having the robots.txt file for the site respond with a 200 status. This will need to be done by your site administrator or developer.

This is only true for the Large plan level and above. The Standard and Medium plans levels have a set limit of 50k pages per campaign and the limits aren't adjustable.

Hi there!

Any changes in settings for a related section such as adding a Google Analytics profile (or adding/deleting tracked keywords, changing search engines, updating competitors, etc.), you will have to wait until the next scheduled update for that section to see fresh data! In most cases, that means it should be reflected in the campaign's next weekly update.

The traffic section is an integration that you can add to your campaign, but it is not necessary for the majority of the reports we run. Pretty much all of our reports are generated with proprietary data collected by our own crawlers and do not rely on the integration to be set up. Having a GA account connected to your campaign can certainly add color and insight to these other reports, but it is not required for our tools to run on the site.

Hey Cindy, you can definitely track Wordpress sites with our tools.

You don't need to add any type of tracking code for our tools, so you can just enter the homepage URL in the campaign creation and get started from there. All of our reports are generated by accessing the site directly and crawling through the links to pages we find there.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice on the Google Analytics issue, though, since I haven't managed a Wordpress site myself.  So I will leave that open to our community members to answer.

Hey Nina, sorry your crawl data is looking a bit off.

We don't count 301 redirects in the duplicate content, so it may be that these pages were not yet redirected when we crawled or that they are responding differently to our crawler than they would in a browser. However, it is difficult for me to say without looking into the pages directly. Can you please let me know which campaign you are seeing this on so that I can investigate further?

The crawler that Moz uses for the On-Page scores is very rudimentary, so it can only match the characters directly and any difference between the characters on your page and the keyword term will be reflected as no match in the optimization report.

I can't speak to the SEO aspect of the question, but I can say that Google's bot is much more sophisticated than ours, so it is likely that they can understand the similarity of the two terms much better than our On-Page crawler can.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these reports is that we only show these as suggestions based on SEO best practices, but you may certainly find that not every suggestion is exactly what your site needs. It is important to consider what the right things is specifically for your site and to use your discretion when taking these suggestions into consideration.

The Unlinked Mentions query should automatically be including the search operator -rd:yourdomain.com when you go to that tab. For example, when I go to that tab while researching moz.com, the system autofills the mentions field with the search query: moz OR moz.com -rd:moz.com. The -rd: operator means "exclude this rootdomain."

Can you tell me if that operator is not being included automatically when you go to that tab or if you are removing it from the query? I tested this feature for a number of sites and the operator was correctly included automatically on all of the tests I've run, so I'm not certain why you may be running into issues with the operator. Any further details you can provide will help me dig into this further.

Hey there! I just followed up on the message you sent into our help team, but I wanted to also post the answer here for reference.

It looks like the robots.txt file may have recently been changed for the site because I created a new campaign for the subdomain and I am not getting that same error. You should no longer see this error on your next campaign update or you could create a new campaign and you would no longer see the error there.

I did notice that you ran a number of crawl tests on the site since the campaign update, but the important thing to realize is that the crawl test can be cached for up to 48 hours. (I removed the crawls in this version of the screenshot for privacy.) We also cache the crawl tests from campaign crawls, so it looks like the first crawl test you ran on the 29th was cached from your campaign crawl and the two subsequent crawl tests were cached from that first crawl test.

Again, I wanted to note that it looks like there are only links to about 2 other pages (terms and privacy) that are on the specific subdomain you are tracking, so we aren't able to crawl beyond those pages. When you limit a campaign to a specific subdomain, we can only access and crawl links that are within the same subdomain.

I took a look at your crawl test and I don't see that we are reporting any duplicate pages for http://www.radiantguard.com or http://www.radiantguard.com/. We are actually reporting that http://www.radiantguard.com/ is the canonical tag of http://www.radiantguard.com and we would never report a page as a duplicate of the canonical tag. We do consider these two pages as separate pages, as many sites do also treat them differently, so we try to encompass the most sites with the way we report on pages with trailing slashes.

You may still want to consider Ryan's advice regarding how to deal with these two pages, however, I just wanted to clarify that we are not reporting any duplicates on either pages. When I use the Hurl.it tool, I'm actually seeing a 500 internal server error from the site: http://www.screencast.com/t/q8ztS92saho, but that doesn't seem to be the main issue that is causing the error for our tools.

When I curl the site as Rogerbot, I get a 403 Forbidden error for our crawler: http://www.screencast.com/t/x6hfVJj85I. Unfortunately, this means that your server is specifically blocking Rogerbot from accessing the site, so you would need to work with your webmaster to white-list our crawler in order to create a campaign for your site.

Once we are allowed access to the site, the 500 internal server error would also become an issue, so I would have the webmaster for the site look into that, as well.

The workaround is on our end and it is already in place. I've tested running on-page reports and campaigns for a number of Squarespace sites and I'm not seeing any current issues trying to crawl or access these pages. If you can let me know the URL you are trying to check (or email [email protected] with the details) I can look into this further for you.

In all likelihood, this is not related to the Squarespace issue, but actually to the .agency tld. Since pretty much anything can be used as a tld now, but our crawlers were built before this was allowable, we aren't set up to automatically recognize custom tlds. The standalone on-page grader is our oldest and most rudimentary crawler tool, so it is also updated the least frequently.

You can create a campaign for lightningjar.agency with no issue and there you would get on-page grades from our newly updated campaign on-page grader that is much more accurate.

I was just coming back to the thread to say that we have found a temporary workaround that should fix the issue while we work on a more permanent solution. From Sha's answer there, it looks like this shouldn't disrupt Googlebot's ability to index your site and I do see 303 results when I run a site:www.mangofurniture.co.uk search in Google, so it does look like they are indexing your site and I'm not really certain why your homepage wouldn't be ranking. There are a lot of SEO related reasons that could happen.

Since I can't provide more insight into the SEO side of this question, I'm switching the category over to Technical SEO Issues for you, so you can hopefully get a better answer from one of the experts here.

I want to let you know that I removed the link to your campaign from your last post and I would recommend that you don't post those types of links publicly. Our site is secure, and only admins and account owners can access data through those links, but you never know what someone may try to do maliciously with that information.

For the link you provided, we are reporting those pages as duplicate content because they are pretty much 100% similar in the code and content for the page: http://www.screencast.com/t/qMgveoj4i. (Our campaign tolerance is 90% similarity.) The only difference is the state name the pages refer to, which is not enough to make the pages different. It looks like you are trying get some assistance without specifically naming the site you are concerned about and I definitely understand that, but it is really difficult to give advice on this issue without more detailed information. However, I took a look at your campaigns and I am going to address the issue I am seeing with the site that had the largest increase of duplicate content over the last couple of crawls. I apologize if this isn't the site you are referring to.

The campaign I'm looking at is the 5 Star campaign. It looks like a large number of the pages with duplicate content are related to ?attachment parameters in the URL, such as www.site.com/?attachment_id=77899. There is very little content on these pages and it looks like they are added to the site pretty regularly, since all of the ones I looked at are dated closely together.

I'm not an SEO expert, so Bryan may have better advice for you, but I can give a few suggestion of how to resolve this issue. I don't entirely understand the purpose of these pages, so that would affect which of these options might be best for your personal strategy for the site.

You can add a canonical tag to these pages to point to one specific page as the most important page with this content. For this option, they would have to point back to the same page or our crawler will still show them as duplicates because we assume that the two canonical pages are then also likely to be duplicates. Google, however will stop indexing these pages.

You can also block these pages from being accessed using the robots.txt file for this site. For example, it would look something like this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: ?attachment

etc., until you have covered all of the parameters you would like to block. The User-agent: * blocks all crawlers from accessing those pages, but you can also use User-agent: rogerbot to specifically block only our crawler.

The link metrics section of your campaign pulls from our Mozscape index, which updates about once a month.

Most new sites and links will be indexed by our spiders and available in Mozscape and Open Site Explorer within 60 days, but some take even longer for a variety of reasons, including the crawl-ability of sites, the amount of inbound links to them, and the depth of pages in subdirectories.

Just so you know, here's how we compile our index:

• We grab the most recent index
• We take the top 10 billion URLs with the highest MozRank (with a fixed limit on some of the larger domains)
• We start crawling from the top down until we've crawled 180,000,000,000 pages (which is about 35% the amount in Google's index)

Therefore, if the site is not linked to by one of these seed URLs (or one of the URLs linked to by them in the next update), then it won't show up in our index.

We update our Mozscape Index every 4-8 weeks. Crawling the entire Internet to look for links takes ~2-4 weeks, but our crawlers are always collecting data. When we need to put the index together, we grab all the data they have collected and start processing, which can take up to 3 weeks to determine which of those links are the most important.

Mozscape focuses on a breadth-first approach. This means that we almost always have content from the homepage of websites, externally linked-to pages, and pages higher up in a site's information hierarchy. But deep pages that are buried beneath many layers of navigation are sometimes missed and it may be several index updates until we catch all of these.

If our crawlers or data sources are blocked from reaching those URLs, they may not be included in our index (though links that point to those pages will still be available). Finally, the URLs seen by Mozscape must be linked to by other documents on the web, or our index will not include them.

I hope this information helps! While the site and links may not be indexed yet, give it some time - maybe we'll see them in OSE next month!

To add to Bryan's advice, I just wanted to clarify how we count things as duplicates. Our tool has a 90% tolerance for duplicate content, which means it will flag any content that has 90% of the same code between pages. This includes all the source code on the page and not just the viewable text, so often it's a matter of finding the best answer for resolving the specific type of pages being marked as duplicates.

I know we talked in a private email about this temporary bug, but I just wanted to reply here so the post in the Q&A forum doesn't remain unanswered. I know you were able to get the campaign set up already, but please do let me know if you need help with anything else.

Eric and Andrew are both right on this one; PA can definitely be higher than DA in certain situations.

PA is a measure of how likely a page is to rank against any other page in our index, while DA is the same thing for a domain rather than just one page. You can definitely have one page on a domain that ranks well while all of the other pages aren't doing so great.

Both DA and PA are calculated based on a large number of metrics so, while they aren't mutually exclusive, they aren't directly correlated either. DA is taken into account when calculating PA, so a low DA could bring down a high PA a bit, but it doesn't negate all of the other metrics that would make the PA high.

I'm really sorry that you're running into this issue! We recently discovered that Squarespace's automated server systems have blocked our bot from accessing sites they host with a 403 Forbidden status. We are working with them to find a resolution to this block, but I am afraid that I am not certain if or when this will be resolved.

Sorry for the confusion here! In the main custom report section, we only show two dates, the date the report was created and the date the next report is scheduled to run. We don't show the date the last report was run in the main custom report section, but we do show it if you go to the Actions dropdown on that page and select "Download Past PDFs." From there, you will see a calendar pop up for the current month, which in this case displays that the report was sent on November 1st: http://www.screencast.com/t/nU9hH3Sog3H9

This report was also emailed to both you and the additional client email you added on November 1st in an email titled "Your Monthly Report" per the email settings in the custom report.

I took a look at your campaigns but I didn't see one that is specifically returning an 803 error for the homepage, so I really need a bit more information in order to investigate what might be going on here. If you don't want to share the specific site publicly here, you can email us directly with the the campaign details or just click the blue circle on the bottom right corner of your account to message us directly from within the app with the details.

There are already a lot of good answers here, so I just wanted to jump in and clarify a few points about our software specifically.

• We don't use a cached version of your site from Google, we crawl the pages directly each week with our own crawler to get the data for your updates. If you make changes between the updates, you should see these reflected in the data the next week.
• In the campaigns, we do count both the plural and singular versions of the keyword because the major search engines see these as the same, as well. If you do a search for LED Bulbs in Google, it pulls up results for both the singular and plural version of that term, so we want to reflect that in our reports. (Please note that the current version of the stand-alone research tool does not count plural and singular as the same term.)
• The on-page reports are just a suggestion based on our experience and best practices. Even though you may have 27 instances of a keyword in your code, that doesn't mean you won't rank well. You would need to look at all of the factors of the report and how you are rankin and then make a decision that best fits your specific SEO and marketing strategy. I do think Zoe Rigley's advice here is really great in regard to on-page strategy.

I would actually recommend that you take a look at the On-Page report for this pairing that we are generating in your actual campaign vs. the research tool, as we have recently updated the campaign On-Page grader to be more accurate and explicit about the issues we find. We still intend to update the research tool version, but it still shows outdated report information. You can find this report on the Discover tab under Search>On-Page Optimization within your campaign.

I'm sorry that you are having some trouble getting your site crawled. We are actually finding links in our index to unplag.com, because these links are found by crawling other sites rather than your actual site. However, we are unable to provide crawl diagnostics within your campaign because we are receiving a 400 bad request error from the site. You can also see that response using this header checker tool here: http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php

In order to figure out why your site is returning this response, you would need to have your hosting provider investigate into your server.

Are you trying to add keywords in the Rank Tracker tool or within your campaigns? I ask because the answer is different between the two sections and the original Q&A post was titled with "Rank Tracker" but was actually about the campaigns.

For the Rank Tracker tool, we currently don't offer bulk uploads I'm afraid.

In your campaigns, you can use the left side navigation to go to Search>Keyword Rankings>Add & Manage Keywords and then add your bulk list of keywords from the Add Keywords tab there. Here is a screenshot with that navigation highlighted.

It looks like Donna answered your question about OSE, but I wanted to follow up about the 404 you are seeing in the crawl test for http://www.hoesjescases.nl. Unfortunately, the 404 response is what is being returned from your server to our crawler: http://www.screencast.com/t/HaQJ2zd0wiG4. I did check other HTTP checkers, like hurl.it, and I'm getting a 200 for your site, so the response does seem specific to our crawler. It may be that the webmaster intended to have the server return a 403 forbidden error or something like that (which we still wouldn't be able to crawl, but would be the correct error if we are purposefully blocked), but you would need to talk to your web host to resolve the issue.

Sorry for the confusion here! It looks like the subdomain, www.car-moderne.ch, returns a 200 HTTP status to our crawler and to other crawlers, such as the hurl.it tool. In the body of the screenshot I attached from the hurl.it tool, the only code there is the number 404, so basically the site is serving a page with no crawlable data. The page isn't redirecting and it doesn't return any real source code, so there is no data for us to include in the crawl. I would recommend working with your webmaster to resolve this issue and to get the page to correctly serve a 301 redirect to the /fr version of the site to all crawlers.

I can see that the site is correctly responding with a 301 redirect for some crawlers, such as this test I ran as googlebot, but the response doesn't seem to be consistent. One thing you will want to be sure to have your webmaster check is how the site responds to user-agents that are hosted on Amazon Web Services, as some of our crawlers and the hurl.it crawl are both hosted through AWS.

Once the issue of the HTTP response is resolved, you should be able to get much better data from the crawl test tool.

Hi Nate,

Dirk's recommendation for the Ranking History CSV is correct; that report will provide you with the history of your rankings for the life of the campaign.

For the other sections of the campaign, we don't really provide historical data, but you can download the most current CSVs or PDFs for your reference. Once you cancel the account, your campaigns are automatically archived so we will stop collecting data going forward. We only display twelve cycles (days or weeks) in the campaign, so if you decide to reactivate your account after about three months, you will no longer see past data in your campaign but all of the settings will be saved and we will begin updating data in the campaign again within about a week.

I took a look at your campaign and it looks like Lynn's suggestion that Javascript may be blocking the crawl is correct. Unfortunately, our crawler isn't sophisticated enough to parse Javascript and all of the links from the homepage are hidden within the Javascript navigation so we aren't able to find them to crawl past the homepage. The only differences between the campaign crawl and the crawl test are that the campaign is an automated tracking that updates once a week and the crawl test is an on the spot crawl that can be requested at any time, though the crawl test is limited to crawling only 3000 pages of a site. (This shouldn't be an issue for the Stop Wobble site, as we have only found about 600 pages.) The type of audit you get between the two tools is the same.

The purpose of the crawl test is to audit sites that you don't necessarily want to create a full campaign for yet, but it is often used check site updates between regularly scheduled campaign crawls.

Thanks for writing in and sorry for the confusion! We only update the crawl diagnostics in the campaign once a week, and it looks like the last crawl for the Stop Wobble campaign was updated on Aug 12th. When you update your site between crawl updates, you won't see the new information in your campaign until the next weekly crawl, which is schedule for August 19th by the end of the day Pacific Time (since we operate out of Seattle.)

In the meantime, you can always run a Crawl Test for the site here between the weekly updates. You will just want to wait at least 48 hours after the last campaign crawl, as we cache the data to preserve resources.
